The people of Kickstarter have spoken...
At FLAT[lyn] the customer is always right. We have had a large request of people asking for a version with a larger loop, that the anchor can fit through, eliminating the need for a lock. It has been made. With the larger loop, we have extended the length of the Flatlyn to approximately 5 feet. We are giving any of our current backers the option to upgrade to this model, just send us a message and we will place a note on your order. Also, if you do any of the larger pledges, you can request a large loop model there as well. Thank you so much for your support!
As adventures, we sought out to create a product that would secure our bikes to our trunk when traveling so we didn't have to worry when stopping for food, or leaving our car in a parking lot. This is how we came up with the FLAT[lyn].
How it works
The FLAT[lyn] (pronounced flat-line) gets its name from the fact that the main cable of this lock is flat, enabling it to fit through tight places, such as door jams and car trunks. One end of the Flatlyn has a loop to attach a lock to, while the other end has a heavy-grade rubber anchor. To use the Flatlyn, simply place the anchor end in the trunk of your car, car door, regular door, etc. and close the trunk lid or door on it. The flat cable allows the trunk to close easily. Now lock whatever you desire to the loop end and your item is secured.
As outdoor mountain bikers, we were always concerned that our bikes were going to be stolen when we stopped for food, were parked somewhere, or while camping, so we started brainstorming ideas on how we could secure our bikes and other toys when traveling. We started by thinking of a way to screw some type of device onto our license plate and our idea evolved from there to the trunk. We went through a variety of ideas from large metal ball bearings, to dog chew toys to attach a cable to secure our bike. Many designs later, we arrived at our final product prototype using a hardened rubber anchor to secure the cable inside of a car or door. After development we realized that this product is not only for bikes, but just about anything you can think to secure to your car: snowboards, skis, surf boards, and so on.
Why We Need Your Help
In order to make this cost less to produce and available everywhere, we have decided to ask you guys for help through Kickstarter. With the funds we raise, we will be able to purchase the required materials to manufacture the Flatlyn at a reasonable cost. With our goal, we have calculated what it will take to make the Flatlyn as cost effective as possible and maintain US manufacturing.

Flatlyn is prepared to bring this product to you. We have refined the steps in our process to be able to procure the materials necessary. We have a proprietary process that enables us to quickly manufacture the Flatlyn and deliver a quality product that will protect your toys from theft.
We start with the main cable. In order to maximize strength, we minimized joints. The Flatlyn is made from one cable, with one joint. We take the single cable and create the loop end with our stainless steel cable clamp. We then take the ends through the protective webbing and then through the rubber anchor. From there, the cable is brought back up through the anchor and everything is crimped under high pressure for a long-lasting, high-secure cable. We then fasten both ends of the webbing with custom fit plastic cover, which also covers the crimped metal in order to protect your car.
Flatlyn is able to acquire the components necessary to produce a very large demand. Our current suppliers are ready to go and do not see a possible way to have a demand too high to satisfy. If for any reason there is a larger demand then we could dream of, we have back up suppliers for every single component as well.
Cable length between the anchor to the loop is approximately 31 inches long, making a total length of about 35 inches.
The cable is rated to break at 1,700 pounds.
The main cable measures approximately 3/16 inches thick approximately 1/2 inches wide.
Risks and challenges
The product manufacturing process is relatively simple, and we've explored various options and backup plans for materials, labor, and shipping. The greatest problem we foresee and have accommodated for is the possibility of a massive response, and our small team not being able to produce the Flatline by the deadline. Since then, we have contacted a manufacturer and may possibly work through them, depending upon the response and demand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
