Introducing Alex Odundo
For the past 15 years, Mr. Alex Odundo has independently built a set of three agricultural harvesting machines from his village in Kisumu, Kenya. His affordable machines are revolutionizing small farming throughout East Africa, greatly increasing the yield of drought-resistant crops to produce valuable end products instead of raw material. He's starting to receive hundreds of orders throughout East Africa, but lacks the tools to produce them fast enough or to high enough quality.
FlameStower is developing its Fire Charger to be the lowest cost in home generator in the developing world, and we're working with Alex to evolve low-cost, local assembly and manufacturing in our target markets in East Africa. Your $100 donation gets you a FlameStower and all profits will go to buying equipment for the Victoria Innovation Center that Alex is building - a saw, a drill press, maybe even a lathe. Its not much, but these things are extremely difficult to find and buy in Africa, and we're taking this opportunity to try to make it happen!
Meet the 'Stowers
Andy and Adam founded FlameStower during grad school in 2012 (the picture below is from Andy's kitchen). We began with a burning desire to create new energy, and ended up with a product that makes electricity from fire. Go figure.
A year and a half later, we have a growing team and are lucky enough to work with some amazing engineers, designers, and manufacturers. We've also been very lucky to be a part of Stanford's amazing business incubator, StartX, who takes chances on weird hardware startups with crazy ideas (like charging phones from cooking fires!)
After a lot of prototyping, getting customer feedback, and demoing more times than we can count, we're excited to start delivering FlameStowers!

We've worked very hard to eliminate all the foreseeable risks when approaching production: manufacturing agreements have been signed, long-lead items have already been ordered, and we're working with partners with a great deal of experience in realizing physical products.
Although unforeseen challenges are sure to appear at less-than-opportune times, we're confident that we have the team and the relationships to overcome these obstacles in getting a high-quality product into your hands as quickly as possible.

Think of FlameStower as a frying pan. Parts of the device get very hot during operation - that's how we operate - but our design lets you place it then leave it while your mobile devices charge a safe distance away. After the fire's out, let your FlameStower sit for a few minutes and you're good to go!
Yes. We've charged iPhones, iPods, Nokias, Samsungs, LGs, headlamps, cameras and run LEDs. We feel confident in FlameStower's ability to charge all devices through a USB connection.
It depends on temperature. But in general FlameStower generates the same energy as a USB port on your laptop computers, or half the power of phone charger in a wall outlet. So, if it takes an hour and a half to completely charge your phone at home, it will take three hours to completely charge your phone with FlameStower. Put another way, for every minute of charge time you should get about three minutes of talk time. Not bad!
FlameStower was designed specifically for charging mobile phones. Both the use of the product (keeping the cell phone and cell phone cable out of the hot area), as well as the internal electronics, were considered with high importance in the design of the product.
The FlameStower Fire Charger works with the energy of your cooking or camp fires. Once the blade is in a fire, the thermal energy is transferred to the Thermoelectric Generator (TEG). The opposite surface of the TEG is in contact with the water reservoir – hot side gets hot, cold side stays relatively cool, and the temperature difference generates electricity.
