As well as being free, Flag prints are big. We print every photo, without cropping it, at 300 dpi. That means almost every image is bigger than other companies expensive, low quality, 6"×4" prints.
If your photo is small and you want to enlarge it, or just make prints that fit old frames, that's easy too with just a tap in our app. 6"×4" and 5"×7" prints are free.

This campaign will help us build a facility which houses the equipment we need in a single location and deliver the next generation of print technology to more people, more cheaply and effectively than previously thought possible.

Other fun photo shapes are free for everyone. They make it easy to crop out the parts of your photos you don't want without wasting hours editing them on a computer.
Flag ships 20 prints a month for free within the US. If you're outside the US and want Flag-quality prints international shipping normally costs from $10 per pack. When you back this campaign and select international shipping for your region you can get your 20 free prints delivered to you free, wherever you are, for a one-time charge.
Flag's free printing and shipping are paid for with ads. We use the blank space on the back of each print, that's been wasted for the last 100 years, to deliver extra photos, captions and targeted advertising.
People don't throw the photos they order away so Flag ads last much longer than other forms of advertising. While clicks, which are gone in seconds, and catalogues are lucky to last a year, a Flag ad can last decades.
As people get 20 prints a month from Flag they don't frame them all. Thanks to paper frames and borders they're much more likely to stay on display, or come in and out of a box on a coffee table, than less exciting prints.
Captions, along with secondary photos and metadata on the back of prints give people a reason to flip them over. That ensures your ad gets seen too.
People's photos are always perfectly targeted to them and looking at their pictures before they see your ad primes them to feel good. They know that your advertising has paid for their printing and shipping. Rather than interrupting people and annoying them, as traditional ads do, you are delivering gifts without damaging the moment they're trying to enjoy.
Flag targets in three ways:
- Addresses. Using delivery information you can send ads to specific locations. Unlike other address lists Flag's are perfect because people have to keep them up-to-date in order to ensure prints are delivered.
- Metadata. You can send ads to based on the evidence of their behavior instead of guesses about demographics. E.g. most people eat lunch near their office and not near their house. If you only have someone's home address you can't know where they may want to eat lunch and can't send an ad they may be interested in. As Flag knows where people take their photos, and use the app, via GPS we can deliver to people who spend time near a business even if they live somewhere completely different. Metadata also enables you to target people without making assumptions about their neighborhood. Someone who travels a lot and takes photos with the newest phones and cameras may be in your target market despite their address being in a neighborhood you would otherwise overlook.
- Image analysis. Using computers to detect people's age and gender can help determine family groups and relationships without resorting to surveys. Finding logos and locations supplements GPS and can help identify people more accurately too.
All of Flag's targeting is done securely and without sharing people's photos or data with advertisers. Flag lets you target groups - like women in Chicago under 45 - without giving any access to their photos or personal information. You can send ads to a zipcode but we won't share the names, images or other information about the people in the groups you target.

Risks and challenges
We have done deals with our suppliers to purchase the equipment we need and are already producing prints at scale.
We need to hire staff and secure a location in which to house production. The space we need requires 480v power, specialized air-conditioning and fire suppression along with access for vehicles and load-bearing floors rated to specific standards. All of this must be surveyed before we can install equipment. We currently have a site in mind but haven't signed for it. If we are unable to use it there may be a delay while we find a new location.
Some of the machines we need are produced overseas and there's also the possibility that delivery may be slower than expected.
We have fulfilled our last Kickstarter with the exception of our Android app which is currently in production. We don't have the resources to build for Android in-house and this is being handled by an American partner company. We expect that app to be complete by December, when we aim to deliver our other rewards for this campaign.
We cannot control the pricing of the hardware we need. It's possible that prices may shift and make it harder for us to buy everything we'd like to if we only raise our minimum goal.
We can fulfill rewards via additional outsourcing and, if necessary, changing the formulation of our prints in order to increase our access to infrastructure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
