Fire-breathing. Bed of nails. Electric chair. Contortion. Human blockhead. Machete ladder. Glass walking. All traditional sideshow acts. However, what happens when a group of five college students no older than 21 learn these acts, create their own traveling sideshow, and tour the Eastern United States over 40 years after the industry’s decline? Not so traditional anymore.
VERA is a feature documentary following the summer tour of these five unique individuals and their sideshow, Circus Vera. In an attempt to revive and preserve the American sideshow, Circus Vera's show holds true and even parallels 10-in-1 sideshows of the 1920s - '40s, but also adds a modern and theatrical style. This makes the show suitable for those who remember sideshows from their childhood as well as those who have never before experienced the awe and wonder they bring. However, living in the close quarters of a tiny truck trailer in brand new environments for an entire summer makes backstage an entirely different world.
The film gives insight into the lives of these individuals and what it’s like working in a industry that was once an American staple, but has been on a steady decline for decades. The film also explores what it’s like to be in business with people who were your friends before they were your co-workers, finding the line between business and friendship, and each member's personal struggles and successes associated with each.
Post-production has begun and we are working with over 70 hours of footage. We need your help to finish the film in a manner that does this unique story justice. With the funds received on Kickstarter, we would be able to obtain music rights, promote the film effectively, and hold an adequate premiere. Furthermore, as filmmakers with high aspirations, we would use additional funding for festival submissions to reach an even larger audience.
Your support is incredibly important and vital to the best possible telling of this story. Every dollar counts and we can't thank you enough for anything you are willing to give.
We hope you enjoyed the trailer and thank you so much for checking out our project.
