About this project
THE FUTURE OF PAYMENTS. NOW.
The Pagaré smartstrap allows you to make contactless payments at millions of retail locations using a Pebble smartwatch. Pagaré is the simplest, fastest and most secure way to pay. Pebble makes the best smartwatches money can buy. Together, they make an unbeatable combination that will open up an entirely new world of possibilities. So leave the wallet and phone behind, and let Pagaré empower you to move freely throughout your day.
SIMPLY TAP AND GO.
Contactless technology is not only cool, it makes payments a breeze. No need to hand over your card. No signing. No fumbling for cash. No pulling out your phone. No QR codes. Just hold Pagaré near the card reader to pay in seconds, using your existing credit or debit cards. It's fast, easy and completely secure. Your time is valuable. Pagaré lets you get out of line and get on with your life.
MILLIONS OF PLACES TO PAY
Contactless payments are possible at over 9 million point of sale terminals worldwide. Below is just a small sample of retailers who will accept Pagaré.
SAFER THAN CASH, SAFER THAN CARDS
Pagaré has multiple layers of security to protect sensitive data. In addition to secure hardware, we leverage the same card network service as Apple Pay to replace your card number with a surrogate value called a token. This means we never need to store your credit card.
LEAVE THE PHONE AT HOME...
Once activated, Pagaré is a completely phone-free solution. In other words, you won't need your mobile nearby in order to make payments. So, take a long jog or head out to the gym without needing to worry about having yet another piece of technology jangling around in your pocket.
...AND DITCH THE CHARGING CABLE, TOO
For added convenience, we've replaced the charging port with a USB connector hidden under the end of the strap. Never worry about leaving your cable behind again. Simply plug Pagaré directly into your computer or any other USB port to easily charge your Pebble smartwatch.
As technology evolves, so will Pagaré. New functionality will be released continually, ensuring that you can have the latest features as soon as they become available.
Public transit is more convenient than ever with contactless technology. FitPay is currently working on integrating major transit authority systems into Pagaré's framework.
Pagaré sports a highly secure architecture that is ideal for access control in your home, at work, or even on the road. Leave your access card behind.
Never worry about forgetting the tickets on the kitchen table. FitPay is working to add ticket capabilities to Pagaré so you can always stay one step ahead of the crowd.
Your Pebble smartwatch is more than just a piece of technology, it's a statement on who you are. It's an extension of your life. That's why Pagare was designed from the ground up to take you further, while still perfectly complementing your style. Special attention was paid to the thickness, comfort, materials and overall look, so you can still proudly show off your Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel or Pebble Time Round smartwatch.
To attach Pagaré to your current Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel or Pebble Time Round smartwatch, simply remove the existing straps using the quick-release pins, place the watch head over the back-plate and reconnect the pins. Pagaré can easily be installed in under 10 seconds.
THE WORLD'S BEST SMARTWATCH JUST GOT BETTER
Putting it plainly, Pagaré pairs perfectly with Pebble smartwatches. The Pebble smartwatch was already an industry darling with best-in-class battery life, thousands of apps, cross-platform support, water-resistance, and an always-on screen with clear daylight visibility.
Pebble's innovative smartstrap system made it possible to bring Pagaré's game-changing new features to the Pebble Time family of products, enabling secure payments at millions of retails locations, and opening the door to opportunities in transit, ticketing and access control. In short, Pagaré makes your Pebble smartwatch more powerful than ever, for hundreds of dollars less than an entry-level Apple Watch.
The Pebble Time family of smartwatches feature:
- Always-on, daylight readable color screen with a great backlight

SIMPLE TO MANAGE, SIMPLE TO USE
Add the free Pagaré app from the Pebble appstore, scan in your cards and you are ready to start making transactions. Keep an eye out for the contactless symbol at the point of sale, hold your wrist near the terminal to pay, and your transaction is complete!
Handling multiple cards is a snap. Pagaré can easily store every card in your wallet. When you are ready to pay, press the up or down buttons on your watch to cycle to the card you want to pay with. It's instant.
Manage your cards with ease using the companion timeline app. Add new cards, enable or disable existing cards, delete cards, set a card to be the default whenever you pay, view your purchase history, and more!
Your security is our primary concern. To prevent unauthorized transactions, we have add two really cool technologies. First, a method for detecting if Pagaré is on your wrist; second, a personal PIN that prevents anyone but you from making payments with your watch. When you first put your watch on you will be asked to enter your PIN, activating the payment capabilities within. Take your watch off and it's unusable for payments until you put it back on and re-authenticate.
Our goal was to make Pagaré nearly indistinguishable from a standard Pebble smartwatch strap. That is why we worked directly with Pebble's suppliers to provide the same materials, colors and finish for the Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel and Pebble Time Round smartwatches.

The secure element is the heart and soul of the Pagaré solution. Embedded under the watch head, the SE stores the tokenized card data after being digitized by the respective card network. To detect when Pagaré is on your wrist, a flexible PCB runs the length of the strap.
When the trapper is placed over the notch at the end of the USB connector, it activates the Pagaré app and asks for your personal PIN. This assures that you are the owner of the watch and gives you access to the payment capabilities. When the trapper is removed the authentication is lost, disabling the payment environment and protecting your data in the case of loss or theft. The watch becomes incapable of making payments without being on your wrist and authenticated with your PIN.
A flexible NFC antenna is embedded in the top strap, making it quick and easy to perform contactless transactions at any terminal. Simply hold the top part of the strap near the terminal when you are ready to transact. The watch will buzz and a success message will flash across the screen.
SECURE ELEMENT A secure element (SE) is a tamper-resistant platform capable of securely hosting applications and their confidential and cryptographic data in accordance with the rules and security requirements set forth by a set of well-identified trusted authorities.
TOKENIZATION Pagaré utilizes tokenization, a process by which the primary account number (PAN) of your credit card is replaced with a surrogate value called a token. Pagaré uses the same card network tokenization scheme as Apple, Samsung and Android Pay, removing the need for Pagaré to ever store your credit card data.
PCI DDS LEVEL 1 COMPLIANT The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of requirements designed to ensure that companies that process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. Pagaré will be PCI Level 1 Compliant at launch. Companies that meet Level 1 must have yearly on-site reviews by an internal auditor, a network scan by an approved scanning vendor, and typically handle over 6 million Visa and Mastercard transactions processed per year.
EMVCO COMPLIANT EMV -- which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa -- is a global standard for cards equipped with computer chips and the technology used to authenticate chip-card transactions. In the wake of numerous large-scale data breaches and increasing rates of counterfeit card fraud, U.S. card issuers are migrating to this new technology to protect consumers and reduce the costs of fraud. Pagaré adheres to EMV Level 1, which covers physical, electrical and transport level interfaces, and EMV Level 2, which covers payment application selection and credit financial transaction processing.
CARD NETWORK CERTIFIED Pagaré is independently certified with the major card networks. All software must be certified by payment brands to comply with proprietary EMV implementations such as Visa VSDC, and MasterCard MChip.
MEET THE TEAM
FitPay is led by payment industry experts with more than 20 years of payment platform and identity authentication domain expertise. With deep, established relationships with all of the card networks, the FitPay team is well suited for the challenges of Pagaré.
In addition to our core team, we are working closely with our manufacturing partner, ConnecteDevice, as well as the team at Pebble.

Risks and challenges
Pagaré is nearly complete. We’re currently ramping up at our factory and are ready to meet the estimated delivery times.
We’ve done our very best to forecast demand and create a solid production plan. Should we miss projections, we’ll let you know why and make it right as quickly as possible.
Supply Chain Risk
We’re working with a very capable team at ConnecteDevice, who have successfully delivered two previous smartwatches to market. However, component delays and unexpected shortages can occur. If this happens, we’ll be sure to keep you informed and work to quickly solve the problem.
Production Pagaré units needs to be fully certified by Visa, MasterCard and Discover before being shipped. Though all of the proper business relationships are in place, and we are not concerned about meeting certification requirements, certification windows may be limited, potentially causing shipping delays. We will let you know immediately if we think that certification windows do not properly align with our production shipping schedule.
Issuing Partner Risks
We are working with our payment network partners to formalize relationships with issuing banks outside the United States. It is our expectation that at launch, we will have a similar global footprint as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay.
***CANADA, CHINA and AUSTRALIA*** While we are working hard to establish full support for Pagaré from the issuing banks in your region, we cannot guarantee that your bank will be supported by the time Pagaré ships. Please consider these risks before backing this project. Your support of our project will help us validate the demand to the financial institutions and card issuing banks in your region and accelerate the necessary business relationships.
Terms and Conditions
Backers with EU shipping addresses who elect to pre-pay their duties and taxes will have their rewards fulfilled by our agent, Dutec Limited. Dutec Limited is acting as our undisclosed agent on our behalf for distribution of our products when backed via Kickstarter and shipped to an EU address.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Pagaré is water-resistant. The electronics have been "wrapped" to protect against sweat, splashing and rain but we cannot recommend you use it while swimming.
As much as we would like to ship to our neighbors up north, we have not finalized negotiations with the issuing banks in your region. Conversations are ongoing, but we felt it was best not to ship product to an area where it might not work.
Though Australia has the most robust contactless ecosystem in the world, we have not finalized commercial agreements with the issuing banks in this region. We will continue to try and expand our footprint as rapidly as possible, and will alert our followers as soon as we have something to report. However, we did not want to ship into a region where we could not offer known operability.
Yes, yes and yes! The leather strap version of Pagaré fits the Pebble Time smartwatch and the silicon version fits the Pebble Time Steel smartwatch. Feel free to switch it up!
Unfortunately, the physical hardware that we use cannot be easily embedded inside of a metal, link-style strap. For now, there are no plans to create a metal Pagaré strap.
You absolutely do NOT need to enter the PIN every time you make a transactions. You only need to enter the PIN when you put the watch on and close the band. This is for the security of your data. When the watch is taken off the payment environment is deactivated, preventing misuse.
Is the NFC technology capable of being used on other things besides payments? Can you use the watchband to open NFC doors, or unlock your NFC devices?
Pagaré is built on a highly secure architecture that is capable of handling both secure access and transit use cases. However, Pagaré is not an open platform that will allow individuals to board their own cards without support from the issuing authority. As such, we are working with transit authorities and HID systems to integrate their platforms into ours. These are future roadmap items, and we will inform our user base as them become available on the platform.
Pagaré only draws power during a transaction, so the impact on battery life is negligible. You will likely notice no difference whatsoever in day-to-day operation.
Yes! Our platform has nothing to do with Android Pay, and will work fine as long as you can get the standard Pebble app to work on it.
Yes! If you see the Apple Pay, Android Pay or Samsung Pay logos on the point of sale terminal, you will be able to use Pagaré. Even without the logos, Pagaré will work anywhere that accepts contactless transactions.
No, Pagaré is only compatible with the Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel and Pebble Time Round smartwatches.
No, unfortunately the 14mm strap is too narrow to contain the electronics that allow Pagaré to properly make transactions.
Ultimately, yes, but we will probably not have support when Pagaré first ships. We are in ongoing talks with the folks at American Express and hope to be able to announce a more formal date in the near future.
Yes, absolutely. To protect your data against boosted NFC attacks, the NFC functionality is only active when you launch the Pagaré app on the watch. The card networks require this functionality, called "consent", for security reasons, and we could not get our certifications without it. We highly recommend making Pagaré a quick-launch app so you can easily access it with a quick hold of the up or down button on your Pebble. This has the added benefit of making it really easy to cycle through cards.
