Independence passes as History. History isn't over. We need ideas, not One, nor Two, but many—the best. We yearn to be free.

The First Wish of My Heart
Independence means more than fireworks and rodeos. Just as we tell our children holiday stories, we need an unequaled story for Independence Day. This is your chapter, it is Washington's Farewell, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Elizabeth Cady Stanton's Sentiments, Dr. King's Dream, Nelson Mandela's Freedom and Aung San Suu Kyi's Prize. This is a children's story for it was a child who first called out that the Emperor had no clothes.
This is the story of Independence and where to find it. With partisan gridlock strangling our governments, we need Independence from Party to find a way forward. We need choice, options, better ideas, independent thought, not lock-step Party discipline. We overthrew a King and his Party of One. We can free ourselves from the deadlock grip of the new Kings of the Party of Two. We need to turn again in our time of greatest need to a leader who stood alone—our only non-partisan President, George Washington. Unlike the campaign ads of our day that offer little more than mindless pandering or vicious personal attack, these words of George Washington's took courage, wisdom, foresight, great thought and true independence.
Washington led the First American Revolution of Independence, and someday he will be credited with leading us again in the Second American Revolution of Independence. For his timeless leadership will help bring us to a place without parties, a place where we are free to listen to ideas on their merits, not their Party of origin. If we are wise, and live up to the interest and duty George Washington prescribed, we could measure people by their character, and we could take off our labels and leave behind the colored lenses of our Party categories. We are best when we can see and think clearly, free of lockstep Party thought.
Independent ideas like KickStarter would not happen if only One Party or Two Parties could decide an agenda for all ideas. KickStarter is not a RED or BLUE idea; in fact, KickStarter is helping kick start this revolution in a myriad of colors. The internet is the greatest force of disintermediation the world has ever seen as it cuts out the power brokers and gatekeepers of Old. KickStarter happens because we are free to choose. Better ideas come to life when Independent creative minds are set free to think and be. This is our Independence Day. This is America. We need to tell our story, George Washington's real story to our children. It is our children who can give all fair hearing, as they are so very open and the model of free.
Your funding will help us illustrate, print, and distribute this full color book of about 1700 words, written to appeal to the vast middle so that our children may someday know what it means to be free.
Excerpt from the book:
A not so long time ago
in a Land not so far away,
lived a people who could not be who they may.
There were rules, you see, that made them not free,
for Kings and king makers ruled them with glee.
These people were told,
“You must not be who you are!”
For the King gave his edicts as He ruled from afar,
“You must be my subject and answer to Me.
You must serve the King’s Party and you all must agree.”
For most of the People,
there was no Party to be had.
For most of the People, the King’s Party was quite bad.
As the huge Party spending made them poorer each day.
And for this overspending the people were forced to pay.
But then came a day, where things changed forever more,
A day, an idea, that spawned great freedom and lore.
The answer, you see, made unCommon Sense,
The answer was found in this simple sentence:
That You are I of Independence
Armed with an answer, found in a pen,
supporting a man named Washington.
We the people, we realized it too,
It is you that are I . . . and
I that am You.
President Washington was our first I to be,
a leader with vision that few could ever see.
A small part of I in you and in me,
was a gift from Washington
so that we, could be We.
Why KickStarter? 90 million reasons
Because KickStarter is the best example to date of how diverse independent ideas, can compete on their merits when given fair hearing without the intermediation of power brokers of old. Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler, Charles Adler and all the KickStarter team have helped spark more than just indie products, they show us what is possible when people can directly hear ideas without power brokers limiting the scope of the impossible.
The Pew Research Center reports a 75 year high in their polling data of self identified Independents. Pew found, "Currently, 38% of Americans identify as Independents, while 32% affiliate with the Democratic Party and 24% affiliate with the GOP." 38% of the electorate translates into 90 million voting age Americans, larger than any Party group.
Yet 98% of partisan elections for Governors, Senators, Congress, and state legislatures are held by just two Parties who control a partisan agenda and enforce Party disciple and dogma that limit the diversity of possible answers.
Independence is a living concept that we should extend and pay forward just as those who went before us have helped pave our way today. Kickstarter rides on the shoulders of giants who have founded our path today and your support will help continue to extend our independence in a multitude of ways into the future.
