First Legion Heroic Scale 28mm Fantasy Miniatures
A new series of 28mm Resin fantasy figures and terrain sets! Highlights:
- Superlative Sculpting and incredibly high quality vacuum cast resin castings
- Sculpts that invariably are superior to the concept art which inspires them
- Fantastic for RPG and tabletop games such as D&D, Pathfinder, Frostbane, Warhammer, etc.
- Incredible value relative to the quality. The level of detail on the sculpts is amazing!
- $4-$5 for Resin Figures of this quality? Shoooot, deal of the century. ;-)
Who We Are
First Legion has long been a leading producer of 60mm scale superbly hand painted historical metal and resin figures as well as metal and resin figures kits in various scales. Please visit our websites for more information.
As a long established business with a proven track record of success, why have we decided to launch this new series of figures via Kickstarter? This is a new market space for us and while we have an excellent brand name and reputation in 60mm hand painted historical figures, 28mm Fantasy is a completely different segment of the market which most likely will not be familiar with our brand and the quality of products we provide. Kickstarter will allow us a higher level of exposure and the ability to offer superb figures at a great price in order to get our products into the hands of as many people as possible. We are confident that once folks receive the figures, they'll love them and more organic growth and expansion of the series can follow.
We thank you in advance for taking the time to see what we have to offer and participating in the Kickstarter!
Special Thank You
We'd like to issue a big thank you to all of the incredibly talented people who worked on the project. From our concept artists, incredibly talented sculptors, and master painters, all of whom are talented beyond belief. And finally, thanks to the First Legion staff in Russia, the USA, and Asia!
It's important to note that we work a bit differently than many companies when it comes to the process to achieve the artistry of our figures. Our "concept" drawings are really only a functional guide providing our digital artists with a general look of what we are trying to achieve. It's during the digital sculpting phase where the main part of the artistry occurs.
Invariably, our Sculpts and the resulting resin figures are far superior to the line drawing concept work from which they originate as our sculptors are the true artists in the process.
As our Kickstarter contains many figures for which the 3d modeling has not yet been done, we feel that it's important not only to explain this, but to show some examples of what we're talking about. As you can see from the images below, the concept work is just that. A general concept. The resulting final figure is far superior. Please bear this in mind when viewing the contents of the KS - if you like the images we show of the figures we have already modeled and/or painted up, you will like the figures that result from the concept art!
A Note About Poses
Following along with what we say about our concepts being guidelines, we want to be sure that we clearly explain that when we show a concept below in the Core Sets/Add-Ons for which we do not have a finished model yet, the pose may be altered to provide the highest quality figure sculpt. The final figure will be what we have represented it to be, but most likely will not be exactly what we've shown and sometimes significantly different. See examples of our Goblin on Warg Concepts below compared to the final sculpted figure. If a concept shows a Goblin on a Warg with a bow, the final figure will be a Goblin on a Warg with a bow. But the pose will most likely be different than what we have shown, usually far superior. So we just want to be sure that you are fully aware of our process in this regard so there are no surprises!
Following the completion of the KS if we reach our funding target and as we finish the modelling of the figures that are not yet done, we will post updates of each figure as it's finalized so that you can follow along and see the final result of a given sculpt.
Extremely High Quality Resin Castings
Our fantasy figures are superlatively sculpted and produced in extremely high quality casting resin (similar in properties to PVC plastic but with superior detail). We understand that many folks are a bit leery of purchasing figures of only images of 3d Models. This is one of the reasons that we have modeled so many of the figures in advance and made casts of them, so that we can clearly show the quality of what you will receive when backing our Kickstarter. Here the highlights:
- Extremely high quality casting resin with properties similar to ABS plastic, but more highly detailed.
- Vacuum cast with high quality silicon molds. NOT spin cast, which is cheaper and much faster for production, but lower quality result.
- Paint ready when you receive them, NONE of the oily release agents that can be found on poorly produced resin figures
Pledge with confidence, you will not be disappointed!
As we have already modeled many of the figures, we had some of them painted up to show you examples of what can be achieved with the final figures you will receive once you start painting them up. A picture is worth a thousand words as they say, so don't take our word for it, just have a look. And just to repeat so there is no confusion, all figure rewards are provided unpainted and unassembled except where specifically noted otherwise.
The figures are Heroic Scale 28mm being on the larger end of what is considered 28mm. They would be more accurately described as 32mm (sole to eyes) for humans. Goblins, Orcs, etc. are purposely done in a size and style of our own with the Orcs in particular being large brutish fellows at about 38mm tall to the top of the heads. Our figures are compatible in size with figures from companies such as Games Workshop and Reaper to name a few and below is a side by side photo showing a few of our figures next to a few Reaper Bones figures. Ours are a little bigger I think, but not so much so that they wouldn't work together.
We got a few of the figures out to some folks to see what they thought about them and here is the feedback. Since our inception in 2007, we do all of our sculpting and paint mastering in Russia and these figures are no exception, so many of the folks who have had a chance to see the figures in hands are Russian. Our product development studio is in Moscow.
Review from Miniwarpaint - This review is on VK.com which is essentially the Russian Facebook. As it's in Russian, we have a translation of the review on our site.
Review from Ravenswood Art Studio - here is another review that was recently done about the figures. This one in English with several images of the figures in Resin including a side by side goblin photo next to a figure of a different MFR.
YouTube Video Review from Russian Gaming YouTube channel "The Station". Yes, the voices are in Russian, but definitely worth a look as it shows close ups of several figures, their parts, how to assemble them, etc... NOTE: You can use the auto translate to get English (or other) subtitles from the settings menu.
- Kickstarter Funding Period Runs Until June 14th
- At the close of funding, if we have reached our funding target, Kickstarter Processes your cards for your pledge amount
- Around a Month after the KS concludes, we will send out our Pledge Manager. This is where you will select the specific rewards you would like and pay your shipping costs.
- 44 Days after the KS ends is the last day for Refunds (see shipping section for more details)
- 8 Weeks after the Pledge Manager is sent out is the deadline for final responses and selections
- From late 2019 to end February 2020 we will ship backer rewards.
Please note that while we will do our level best to meet these dates, they are estimates only. This is our first Kickstarter, but not our first rodeo so to speak, so we feel these dates are achievable particularly given the advance work that has already been completed. Please read the Shipping and Risks and Challenges Sections for more details.
We have organized our Project into 12 Core Sets, add-on sets which are grouped as small sets or available as individual figures, and "Free Stretch Goal" Rewards. Relative to the quality of sculpting and castings, it's really a great deal.
There are a total of 12 Core Sets. Each Core Set is $50 and the number of core sets you choose corresponds to your Pledge Level. Further, if you choose 6 or more Core Sets, the pledge amount required decreases by a further 10% to $45 for each Core Set. So while 5 Core Sets requires a $250 Pledge Level, 6 core sets requires only a $270 Pledge Level and so on up the pledge ladder.
We have a limited number of "Early Bird" backer pledge levels available providing another 10% less than the core set price at that pledge level.
Finally, we have a very limited number of backer rewards at the "God of War" Pledge Level which consists of all 12 core sets, all add-on Sets (except painted figures), and all unlocked Freebies available at significant savings!
In addition to the Core Sets, there are a wide variety of add-ons that are available as either single figure rewards or smaller sets of figures. These sets often complement core sets or are larger figures such as Ogres, Trolls, and Dragons. If you want add-ons, you simply add the amount of the add-ons that you want to your Core Set pledge level. Our pledge calculator can help you configure your final pledge amount based on the number of Core Sets and Add-Ons you would like as your backer rewards.
Note that your Pledge Level is solely determined by the number of Core Sets you select as rewards. Add-Ons have no bearing on Pledge Levels. So if you select 1 Core Set and $200 worth of Add-ons, you are still at a Kobold Pledge Level.
Please see the video below for how to calculate your pledge amount when it includes add-ons.
Please use our Pledge Calculator to Assist you. Selections will be made after the KS Concludes if there are multiple options to choose from such as Ogres, but the Amount of $ Pledged should be entered now in your Pledge Total.
Please note that during the Pledge Manager phase following funding, you can add to your current pledge amount for additional ad-ons or additional Core Sets.
Freebie Stretch Goals (UPDATED JUNE 3RD!)
To make what is already an excellent deal on figures of this quality even better, we have a series of Free Stretch Goals tied to funding targets which represent additional, totally Free Figures that will be given to any backer who does either of the following:
- Pledges at least Orc Level (4 Core Sets) or higher.
- Any Pledge Level, including add-ons only, with a total Spend of at least $300
If all stretch goals are met, the "freebies" add the equivalent of another 2 full Core Sets! So if you pledge 4+ Core Sets (OR spend $300+)and we reach all funding targets, you would receive another nearly 2 more Core sets of "Freebies."
Free Stretch Goal Figures are unlocked once the corresponding funding target has been reached.
And now the good stuff, the Miniatures!
During the pledging period, don't worry that Kickstarter doesn't know which core sets and add-on's you want as rewards. You will make your selections during the survey period after funding has closed via our Pledge Manager. The important thing is to be sure you pledge the correct $ amount for what you want including add-ons. Please use our Pledge Calculator to assist you.
Please note that ALL figures are provided unpainted and unassembled. Painted figure images that we show are just examples of the painting that can be achieved. The sole exception to this are the two figures offered as Painted Figure Add-Ons
These 9 lovely Orcs are doing what Orcs tend to do, raiding and fighting. We have purposely scaled our Orcs to be a bit larger than humans, so these are good sized figures at about 38mm tall and wonderfully detailed. If you want to use these for building full wargames units, please see the "Orc Command Set" in the optional add-ons. 2 Core Sets of Orcs plus the optional "Command Pack" allows for a wargames unit of 22 figures!
Orcs are people too....err....sort of! We have oft wondered exactly what it is that Orcs do when they're not out looting and pillaging. So we designed these figures to show their softer side, life in the typical Orc Marching Camp. These figures are designed to work with our Optional Add-On Terrain sets, appropriately named "Orc Marching Camp" Parts 1 and 2. See them below in the Optional Add-Ons section. Additionally, also as an optional add-on are a set of 4 Kobolds who the Orcs have pressed into forced labor. Life is tough at the bottom of the food chain.
The set title says it all! If you have an affinity for the little green guys, this is the set for you. 12 Wonderfully sculpted Goblins in a variety of poses. If you want to build full wargames units with these figures, please see the "Goblin Command" Optional Add on set for a command pack.
And as the mounted complement to our Goblins, we have more of them here riding into battle on equally cool Wargs! This set consists of 6 Mounted Goblins on Wargs, you will receive both full figure variants of 28034, one with the sword and one with the spear.
These stunning sculpts depict a variety of lovely and dangerous ladies perfect for character models, the center piece of RPG encounters, or whatever else you come up with for them. They range from Female Warriors to Sorceress types and are some of our favorites!
Skeletons are just cool. Ever since the days of the Jason and the Argonauts movie when they come up out of the ground and start fighting, they have captured our imagination. This Core Set comes with 11 Different Skeletons that can be used for wargames units or in a wide variety of RPG settings. Who doesn't love those low level RPG skeleton bashing romps!
This set adds 6 different Mounted Skeletons, perfect for full wargames units or for a unique encounter in an RPG setting. Coupled with our Foot Skeletons and all of the other undead that are part of our initial launch, an entire army of the Undead can be formed!
This set consists of 10 different Elves, a good mix of male and female figures, each capturing the ephemeral beauty and dexterity of the fairest of fantasy races. Dynamic and full of movement, this is one set where the 3d Sculpting will adhere most faithfully to the concept art, particularly in regards to poses. Not only can they be used in wargames units, but they will make excellent Character models as well.
This set consists of 10 different Dwarves of the Realm, an interesting variety of warriors, miners, the King and King's Guard, a woman (yes, there aaaaarrrrrrre dwarf women) and even an assassin. The two figures shown in Resin and the one painted resin figure below are some of the only traditionally sculpted figures in this project, all remaining concepts will be 3d Sculpted by our incredibly talented artists.
This core sets adds some more wonderful undead to the collection. A joy to paint and great for use in an RPG setting or as leaders or powerful characters in a wargames army. Please note that the top four figures shown below are significantly larger/taller than most figures, about 1.5-2 x the height of a skeleton making them appropriately menacing indeed!
This set along with Core Set 12 provide atmospheric pieces to bring your tabletop village to life. Various vendors, villagers, guards and accompanying accent pieces. Perfect for use as NPC's in RPGs as well as in historical wargames settings and for diorama building. Flexible and interesting!
Part 2 of our Villagers and accents to bring a tabletop village to life. Great figures for both fantasy and historical settings for tabletop gaming, RPGs, and diorama building.
Below are add on figures that you can add to your "Core Set" pledges. They are offered either in "Sets" or available individually when the price is listed as "Each". So for example, The Town Guards are a "Set" and the Ogres can be selected individually. Again, don't worry that KS will not know exactly which add-ons you want as rewards in the case of different options such as the Ogres, selections will be made during the Survey Period via our pledge manager at the conclusion of funding. However, it is very important that you edit your Pledge Amount to include the $ you will back for the add-ons that you want. And yes, you can purchase additional add-ons during the Pledge Manager Period as well.
Please use our Pledge Calculator to Assist you. Selections will be made after the KS Concludes in the case of options such as there being different Ogres to choose from.
To help you calculate your total pledge amount, please use our Pledge Calculator.
Below are some additional images of the Orc Camp pieces to provide a better understanding of their detail and scale. The Orc is about 38mm tall. These pieces are the Big and Small Watchtower and the Large Tent. The Leader's Tent will be significantly larger than the Large Tent shown below. The Orcs also fit inside the watchtowers of course.
- Big Watchtower = 90 x 85 x 145 mm (Height 145 mm)
- Small Watchtower = 81 x 85 x 125 mm (Height 125 mm)
- Large Tent = 156 x 175 x 69 mm (Height 69 mm, diameter 156 mm)
We have nearly 2 more full core sets worth of "Freebie" Stretch Goal figures and accessories, so the more successful the project is, the more miniature rewards are available for everyone who pledges "Orc Level" and above or any pledge level with a total of $300 or more (including add-ons only) in total spend. If funding passes the amounts listed below, the reward for that amount will be unlocked and displayed. And just to be clear, these are absolutely Free if they are "unlocked". So spread the word!
* Pledge Levels below "Orc Level" do not receive the unlocked Freebies unless their total spend is $300+.
If the Project is successful beyond our wildest expectations and we pass $575k, we will add more free rewards!
Please Read Completely and Carefully!
We will be charging shipping after the Kickstarter concludes, based on the actual costs incurred to pack and ship your rewards. So your pledge amount does not/should not include shipping costs, these will be charged later. We will collect this via our pledge manager after the campaign ends, using either PayPal or your Credit Card at our sole discretion. We feel that this approach is the most fair to all backers rather than just having flat rate shipping where some backers will overpay and some will underpay for shipping.
Please note that Kickstarter rewards will be bulk packed, not packed in retail packaging, except for the fully painted figure rewards which will be packed in a new fantasy gift box.
We will ship your rewards at our cost to our international hubs. Please note that we will only be shipping from either the USA or within the EU. If you are within the EU we will ship to you from within the EU. If you are in the USA, we will ship your rewards from within the USA. If you are anywhere else in the world, we will ship your rewards from either the EU or the USA at our sole discretion.
* EXCEPTION: The Orc Marching Camps Sets 1 and 2 and the Painted Figure Add-Ons will ONLY ship from the USA. If you are in Europe for example and your rewards include items shipping only from the USA, you can either have your rewards sent entirely from the USA or you can opt for multiple shipments, one from within Europe and one from the USA for those rewards only shipping from the USA.
Following is a list of estimates for shipping, please note that these are only estimates and include order processing costs. These estimates do not include any VAT or Customs TAX unless you are in the USA or the EU. If you are elsewhere, you may have to pay import or other taxes depending on the laws of your country. You are solely responsible to understand if it is legal for you to import these products to your country. If any rewards are returned to us due to failure to pay such taxes or rejected by the recipient for any reason, we will ship them to you again, but you will have to pay the shipping costs again.
Refunds may be given within 14 days of the campaign ending, including fees. Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter project, however, we are not a new company having produced and sold hundreds of thousands of 60mm fully hand painted figures over the past 12 years. As such we have a tremendous level of experience in product manufacturing both for Resin figure kits as well as for far more complex products such as our 60mm fully hand painted historical figures. That being said, the maxim of "what can go wrong, will go wrong" is never far from mind and we are well aware that delays can happen that are simply unavoidable because of a wide range of issues from customs, to human error, to act of God, etc.
We have estimated the delivery for February 2020, but please understand this is only an estimate. Due to the global logistics involved in shipping, some regions may receive their rewards sooner than others and depending on what core sets are selected, some backers may receive their rewards before other backers. We anticipate the last shipments to go out by end February 2020.
Terms and Conditions
If you do not confirm your shipping and pledge details within 8 weeks of our notification via email to confirm them, your pledge will be treated as abandoned and any pledge amounts will be retained as donations to the project. We will, however, look at each case sympathetically and try our best to satisfy each backer.
By pledging on this Kickstarter you agree that our responsibility to you is for shipping your rewards as entered into the pledge management system. You are responsible for import or other duties that may be payable to relevant tax authorities. You also accept that you are fully liable for incorrect shipping details and will risk your rewards being unable to be delivered or lost in transit.
If you do not accept the proposed terms please do not pledge on this Kickstarter project and wait for the general release. Entering a pledge is considered acceptance of these terms and conditions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
