About me and my background
Hi! I'm Gregory. I love to make things. Ever since I was a really young kid I would make things. Anything! Robots (I was obsessed with Johnny 5!), skate ramps, knives, watches, jewellery, furniture, electric scooters...I could go on! I just love it! In fact I never stopped making things, it just what I've always done. So in early 2011 I decided to start a company called Fireti...designing and making things!
I think I mentioned that I like to make things, I also really like titanium. It's just a cool metal. It has exceptional mechanical properties which is why it's used in jets, satellites, missiles, ships, submarines, robots, armour, luxury cars, motorsport, spacecraft not to mention all the medical applications. In fact, just about everything I think is really cool uses titanium in one way or another. That's probably why I like it!
So I started a company with the goal of designing and making cool products primarily out of titanium. I invested in some machinery including a Haas CNC machining centre. My first product was a titanium case for the iPhone 4. The design was totally original and worked really well. It used titanium staple-like wire forms which slotted into 1mm holes drilled into the sides of the front and rear cover. It was called the fireTi4.
When the iPhone 5 came out I already had a design in the works. It was to use rubber o-rings to connect the front and rear plates around the phone. This additional elasticity built into the design would not only look cool, but help absorb impacts from drops. The titanium iPhone 5 case was to be called the Omega which literally translates as "great O" which I thought was appropriate as it used o-rings.
Shortly after putting the iPhone 5 case into production, I realised this "Omega" design really has a lot of other applications, first and foremost a wallet came to mind. The design is ideal because the rubber o-rings stretch to allow different amounts of cash and cards to be sandwiched securely in place. I spent some time designing the wallet with three goals in mind; to be as compact as possible, to be genuinely usable in the real world and of course, it had to open bottles!
I made a few prototypes perfecting the design along the way. When I was happy, I emptied my overfilled leather wallet, took the cards I genuinely needed and did the swap! It felt really good! Light, compact and I had more awesome titanium in my day to day life!
I made an effort to show off my new creation at every available opportunity! Feedback was excellent with many people asking for one.
I'm still using my original Omega wallet 3 months after machining it. I feel this is a good amount of time for a real world test. I really like it and I want to make them for other people.
OK, so why am I here? As you can see I have no problem making these wallets. The problem is I can only make them one at a time. This is not cost effective at all. I have been using tooling for my CNC machining centre I already have available which is not tailored to this particular product. I want to build specialised tooling for the Omega wallet which will allow me to make multiple wallets at a time and will significantly speed up and streamline the entire manufacturing process. This in turn will allow me to make the wallets available at the lowest possible price. The Kickstarter funds will be spent on materials and equipment for tooling as well as material for the wallets themselves.
So how does the wallet work?
It's really simple. You keep your cash stored on top of your cards. To remove cash, just push it out with your thumb. To remove cards, slide the cards out from the wallet using the finger slot, pinch the far side of the wallet and select your card of choice! You can see the wallet in action in the video.
You said it opens bottles?
It's great when one of your friends asks for a bottle opener. Hand them your Omega wallet, tell them it's a bottle opener and watch some very imaginative and entertaining theories come into play. It's like a puzzle. The truth is fantastically simple!
Please Note: Titanium is an excellent material for opening bottles. Aluminium, being softer, may become damaged over time.
RFID Data Protection
The Omega wallet helps keep your RFID data secure when you want it to be, but lets you use your RFID cards easily with the push of a finger! Please Note: Whilst I was satisfied the wallet protected the RFID data with this particular scanner, the only way to protect your data 100% against RFID scans is to completely encase your cards in metal on all sides.
You can have your wallet made out of 6082T6 aluminium or titanium.
Titanium VS Aluminium
- Aluminium is lighter in weight
- Titanium is a darker in appearance
- Titanium is more resilient against scratches
- I only really recommend titanium for opening bottles as aluminium is too soft.
- Anodizing is only available with titanium
Engraving is available for both titanium and aluminium wallets and is an optional extra which costs £5 and £3 respectively. With all engraving options, only the front of the wallet is engraved whilst the rear is completely blank. If you would like both sides of the wallet engraved, you must pledge for an engraving option AND add an additional £5 (£3 for aluminium) to your pledge. If you choose to have both sides of the wallet engraved you are free to choose two different engraving options (Including name engraving - see below).
The available wallet engraving options are as follows:
Custom Text Engraving
Custom text engraving is available for both titanium and aluminium wallets. There are three positions on the plate text can be engraved. You are free to have text engraved in one, two or all three positions (see fig 1). You can also choose whether or not you would like my company logo engraved or not in position 1 (see fig 3). In addition, you can choose whether or not you would like a border on the wallet plate (see fig 2). If you would like custom text engraved, please choose an engraving option when making a pledge.
Number of characters (including spaces) allowed:
Without border: Position 1 - 8, Position 2 - 27, Position 3 - 8
With border: Position 1 - 7, Position 2 - 25, Position 3 - 7
Please Note: Custom text engraving is not available on the same plate as any of the design engravings above.
Anodizing is available for titanium wallets only. If you choose the anodizing option, both the front and the rear of the wallet will be anodized. You are free to choose different colour options for the front and rear.
4. O-ring colour
A set of 12 o-rings will be included with each wallet in any of the following colours.
If you would like an Omega wallet without anodizing or engraving, this wallet is called the Classic. This is available in aluminium or titanium.
If you would like your wallet engraved only - For aluminium choose the engraved option. For titanium choose the engraved OR anodized option.
If you would like an anodized only titanium wallet, choose the engraved OR anodized option.
If you would like your titanium wallet engraved AND anodized, choose the engraved AND anodized option.
If you would like your name engraved - For aluminium choose the engraved option. For titanium choose the engraved OR anodized option.
If you would like your titanium wallet with your name engraved and anodized, choose the engraved AND anodized option.
If you would like BOTH sides of the wallet engraved, choose any engraved option and add £3 to your pledge for aluminium or £5 to your pledge for titanium.
How will you know what engraving and anodizing options I have chosen?
Once the funding period has ended you will receive a survey by email requesting your order information. This survey will cover all available options and combinations.
- Stainless steel torx screws slightly protrude from the surface of the wallet acting as feet to protect surfaces from scratches when you lay it down.
- The wallet will comfortably carry 7 cards + 5 notes (10 cards + 5 notes is about the usable limit although it is possible to fit 20 cards in the wallet).
- The wallet will comfortably carry about 30 business cards although it is possible to fit up to 50.
- The wallet will carry a minimum of 2 cards or about 4 business cards.
- 3 sets of EPDM o-rings are included with each wallet. This is just precautionary as EPDM rubber is extremely hard wearing. I still have the original set on my Omega wallet after 3 months of hard use and testing with no visible signs of wear.
- Should the need arise, o-rings can be replaced without the use of tools.
- The wallet is designed in such a way that the o-rings can never fall out accidentally.
- Each wallet is given a beautiful glass bead blasted finish.
- In terms of length and width it is virtually the same size as a credit card.
- The wallet will work with all US dollar bills as well as all British pound notes and virtually all other paper currency.

Risks and challenges
The Omega wallet will be manufactured by my company, Fireti Ltd, in Scotland, UK. Every aspect of manufacturing, from start to finish, will be done in-house therefore we are not relying on anyone or any other companies. The aim of this project is to raise funds to build production tooling for our machines and to buy materials for the wallets. Building production tooling is something I am very familiar with. I have over 7 years experience as a CNC operator and machinist and 2 years experience doing production runs with my own company. From a manufacturing stand point, I am already in production with an identical product - the titanium Omega iPhone 5 case. There is no new ground to cover. All materials for the wallets will come from reliable suppliers my company already has long standing relationships with. These include suppliers for titanium, aluminium, torx screws, EPDM o-rings and packaging.
My job is manufacturing and production therefore I know the nature of the challenges we may encounter and how to overcome them. Once production tooling is in place there will be a maximum number of wallets I can produce per day. This is the limiting factor. However, to put this in perspective, if we reach our funding target only and no more, this would equate to less than 7 days production.
The delivery estimate of April is conservative and unless we see the kind of extraordinary runaway success of some Kickstarter campaigns, I am confident I can deliver on time.
I won't take pledges lightly. Each pledge is helping me to keep doing what I love, but more than that, it is a gesture of faith in me.
