Intro

We live in dark times — bigotry and fascism are on the rise. Amidst the daily barrage of objectionable nonsense on the news, Fireside thought we’d insert a little hope into the mix. We searched through the stories we published this year and found the ones that helped us hope a little harder, then we put them into a pocket-sized collection that we would like to print and send to you.

About the anthology

Hope In This Timeline includes six short stories by Lee S. Bruce, Beth Cato, Gillian Daniels, Arkady Martine, A. Merc Rustad and Ose Utomi. We’ll produce three versions of this collection: an ebook, a high-quality inkjet zine, and a limited edition chapbook with letterpressed cover — all paired with six beautiful new illustrations by Sara Eileen Hames.

Our contributors

  •  Arkady Martine is a speculative fiction writer and, as Dr. AnnaLinden Weller, a historian of the Byzantine Empire and an apprentice city planner. Under both names she writes about border politics, rhetoric, propaganda, and the edges of the world. Arkady grew up in New York City and, after some time in Turkey, Canada, and Sweden, lives in Baltimore with her wife, the author Vivian Shaw. Find her online at arkadymartine.net or on Twitter as @ArkadyMartine.
  •  Lee S. Bruce is just a girl who dreamt of growing up to be an astronaut ... or a Stormtrooper. After passing the slightly less rigorous standards of the 501st Legion, she turned her attention to a different goal; non-fictional space exploration. In 2015, she began working with NASA on the James Webb Space Telescope in hopes of finding real galaxies, far, far away. Lee spends her spare time reading books and comics, playing video games and binge watching Bob's Burgers. She lives in Long Beach, CA, near her two daughters and 6 month old granddaughter. In an attempt to be the favorite grandparent, Lee is learning to play the Moana soundtrack on guitar.
  •  A. Merc Rustad is a queer non-binary writer who lives in Minnesota and is a 2016 Nebula Awards finalist. (“This Is Not A Wardrobe Door” was first published in Fireside!) Their stories have appeared in Lightspeed, Fireside, Apex, Uncanny, Shimmer, Cicada, and other fine venues. You can find Merc on Twitter as @Merc_Rustad or at their website: amercrustad.com. Their debut short story collection, So You Want to Be a Robot, was published at Lethe Press in May 2017.
  •  Gillian Daniels writes, works, and haunts the streets of Boston. After attending the 2011 Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Workshop, her poetry and short fiction have appeared in Strange Horizons, Apex Magazine, and Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, among many others. She currently reviews for The New England Theatre Geek. She can be found at your house party, petting your cat.
  • Nebula-nominated Beth Cato is the author of the Clockwork Dagger duology and the new Blood of Earth Trilogy from Harper Voyager. Her newest novel is Call of Fire. Hanford, California native transplanted to the Arizona desert, where she lives with her husband, son, and requisite cat. Follow her at BethCato.com and on Twitter at @BethCato.
  •  Ose Utomi has done a lot of different things for a little bit of time, but writing is his constant. When he's not indulging his restlessness by traveling about, he's being a martial artist or doing karaoke—with or without a backing track. He currently lives in New York City.
  •  Sara Eileen Hames makes art about monsters, landscapes, emotions, and other agressively beautiful things. Ze currently works in watercolor, mixed media, porcelain, and fiber. Sara Eileen lives and works in Brooklyn, where ze divides hir time between making art and raising a tiny whirlwind in the shape of a toddler. Hir portfolio is available at saraeileen.com, and hir new daily works are posted on Instagram @saraeileen.

About the editions and rewards

Hope in This Timeline will be published in three editions:

Ebook Edition: Fireside publishes beautiful ebooks, and Hope in This Timeline will be no exception. Illustrated throughout, with readable, graceful typography and good design, the Hope in This Timeline ebook will be available as a Mobi file and an EPUB file, for reading on your Kindle devices and on every other reading system, respectively.

Zine Edition: The zine edition of Hope in This Timeline will be printed and bound by hand, by us! In the fine tradition of DIY zines, we’ll be producing and shipping out the Zine ourselves, and part of the funds from this project will go toward getting set up with a nice printer so that we can do more of these projects in the future.

Chapbook Limited Edition: The limited edition of Hope in This Timeline will be a finely printed and saddle-stitched chapbook, featuring a letterpressed cover. It will be printed at Radix, a worker-owned indie printer located in beautiful Brooklyn, NYC. This chapbook will be limited to 200 copies, so when it’s gone, it’s gone — the only way to get it is by backing this project.

Hopeful Notes Card Pack: A set of cards with the illustrations and quotes from the anthology. Each pack includes 24 cards, with four cards for each illustration.

About Fireside

Fireside started in 2012 as a Kickstarter-funded short story magazine. It began with the goals of publishing great stories, and paying our writers well. Since then, Hugo-nominated Fireside Magazine has become one of the leading new venues for short speculative fiction, and continues to publish voices that advocate for progressive values as resistance to rising fascism and bigotry. This summer, Fireside launched Fireside Quarterly, a beautiful premium print magazine that comes out four times a year, and raises the bar for genre periodicals.

Risks and challenges

There are always risks inherent in production, but for Hope in This Timeline the risks are relatively few. The stories we want to publish are already written and edited, so we’ve been able to put together the production files for the anthology ahead of time. The pending piece of the puzzle is the artwork, which Sara Eileen will get started on once the project is successfully crowdfunded.
Once the artwork is finished, we’ll update the production files, then print and ship the Zine, as well as go to press on the Limited Edition Chapbook. Both processes — printing and shipping here at home, and printing with Radix then shipping out to our backers — could suffer delays due to unforeseen circumstances, or just things moving a bit slower than we expect them to. We’ve tried to build in some buffer time to the the schedule to account for the unexpected, but you never know!
