"After all the glowing reviews I heard at PAX, I have to get my hands on [13th Age] as soon as it comes out." - Mike Krahulik, Penny Arcade
13th Age is a new story-focused, dungeon-crawling, owlbear-fighting roleplaying game co-designed by Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet with art by fantasy illustrators Lee Moyer and Aaron McConnell. It features:
- A d20-style system that has familiar classes (fighter, rogue, barbarian, etc.) but with unique features that make them distinctively fun to play
- Gridless, free-flowing combat
- An Escalation Die rule that keeps battles fast and exciting by giving characters an escalating combat bonus the longer they fight
- Innovative, story-driving character rules such as icon relationships, backgrounds and One Unique Thing, that enable GMs and players to co-create the world
You can play 13th Age as a standalone game, or use it a source of house rules for other RPGs.
"I have to admit there is a lot to like about 13th Age, and I can see many 4E fans meeting Pathfinder/OGL fans on common ground with this game." - Neuroglyph, Pre-Release Review of 13th AGE
"The combination of a streamlined system with fun and unique character creation and an interesting high fantasy world have completely won me over." - Robot Viking blog, 13th Age RPG is a Roiling Broth of Intrigue
Rob, Jonathan, Lee and Aaron want nothing more than to keep working together and create the first expansion book for 13th Age. But they need your help to do it. That's where the 13 True Ways Kickstarter comes in.
If this campaign meets its funding goal, they can cheerfully turn down other rent-paying freelance projects and focus on what they love best: designing and illustrating more great monsters, magic items, locations and NPCs for you to use either with 13th Age, or adapt to your favorite fantasy RPG. Yes, just as you can with 13th Age itself, you can treat 13 True Ways as a collection of house rules for your game of choice.
When 13 True Ways is complete it will be released by 13th Age publisher Pelgrane Press in a full-color edition with the same high production values as the core game.
Here’s what you'll find in 13 True Ways:
- New classes including the druid, monk, and chaos shaman
- Multiclassing rules
- New summoning rules and summoning spells
- Rules for dragon-riding. (Note that this pretty much implies that there will be rules for riding horses too, but screw horses. Dragon-riding!)
- Racial feats (probably)
- Feats associated with the icons (probably)
For the Setting:
- Details on the world’s forests and woods that make them as diverse and distinct as the cities
- Details on monasteries, each of the monastic traditions and the proxy wars between competing orders
- More about living dungeons
- A short guide to the Empire’s finest, most distinctive or most dangerous taverns
- Illustrated comparisons of what an adventurer tier, champion tier and epic tier environment should look like
- Fantastic maps of the overworld and portions of the underworld
- A cutaway map of a typical elven wood
- Stats for the 13 icons so that various types of campaigns can bring them on stage
- Gladiatorial games from the imperial city of Axis
- Playable dungeons and flying realms in a quick-hit format designed to provide the high points the GM needs most, with suggestions for the rest of the experience
- Monsters with monster tiles including summoned creatures and fan-created creatures
- More cursed treasures that will make players hate themselves for wanting them so badly. Also possibly some normal non-cursed treasures.
All this in a 180+ page book lavishly illustrated by Lee Moyer and Aaron McConnell. Become a backer today, get some cool rewards, and help expand the world of 13th Age! (Updated! We've heard you, and now we are committing to 180+ pages, instead of 160+)
$33,500: Monster Art +5 - FUNDED
Want to see even more monster art in 13 True Ways? Maybe a swarm of kobolds ambushing a party, or an owlbear ripping off a limb? If we meet this stretch goal, backers at the $99 level or higher will be invited to make the case in 130 words or less that a particular monster from the 13th Age core rules or the OGL SRD should be gloriously illustrated in 13 True Ways. They can tell a story about the existing monster they want to see illustrated in the book, argue for it, or provide background details -- whatever they think will convince the team that this monster should be chosen for an illustration.
Rob, Jonathan, Lee and Aaron will review the mini-essays, and choose 5 of the proposed monsters to be specially featured. If your mini-essay was the one that persuaded them, you will receive an illustration of the monster you championed. (Note that this is not a call for monsters of your own creation. The monster must already be in 13th Age or the OGL SRD.)
$37,500: Necromancy! - FUNDED
The designers will add a new necromancer class to 13 True Ways, bringing the total number of 13th Age classes to 13.
We will add the Battle Captain to the game. 13 classes is a nice number; 14 is better. We've heard you were interested in playing this class and we're happy to oblige.
$42,000: Monster Art +8 - FUNDED
Even more monster art! We'll expand Monster Art +5 to include backers at the $70 level and above, and increase the number of new monster illustrations to 13. That's 13 more illustrations in the book, each featuring your favorite monsters. Authors of the mini-essays that persuaded the team to feature a monster in the book will receive an illustration of the monster they championed.
$46,000: The Devil? - FUNDED
Just a short while ago 13th Age had demons, but no devils. Now all that has changed! Who are these evil adversaries from the nether realms, and -- more importantly -- how do you defeat them? Jonathan, Rob, Lee and Aaron will bring devils into the world of 13th Age in style!
$50,000: Ready for Battle? - FUNDED
We will add the Battle Captain to the game. 13 classes is a nice number; 14 is better. You have proven you are interested in playing this class and we're happy to oblige.
$53,000: Paint the Town - FUNDED
Axis, Horizon, Drakkenhall, Concord, Glitterhaegen, Santa Cora: six of the most exciting cities in the world of 13th Age. Since we have reached this goal, you, the 13 True Ways backers, will get to decide which one of these cities gets featured in 13 True Ways. The winning city in a poll will have a detailed section in the book that includes at least one full two-page map of a section of the city, and which will focus on some of the coolest places PCs might visit.
$55,000: I Hate This Town - FUNDED
The last place city in the voting for the $50K reward gets a slanderous in-world write-up from Kullis the Cynic and a one page map detailing the city's gameable lowlights.
$57,000: Paint the Town 2 - FUNDED
The full two-page map and city writeup will be given to the city that comes in 2nd place in the voting for the $50,000 goal.
$60,000: This One Goes to 15 - FUNDED
The occultist class joins the game to complement the Diabolist as the necromancer complements the Lich King!
$64,000: Laws & Deviltry - FUNDED
Rob & Jonathan & Robin D. Laws have collaborated before, but not all on the same project at the same time. 13th Age devils are idiosyncratic monsters. Robin will go over the top with 16 pages of their Deviltry (this is on top of the already planned Devil stats you unlocked earlier). To be illustrated by Aaron & Lee.
$67,500: Three Courts- FUNDED
Another 16 Pages by Robin, illustrated by Aaron and Lee, this time detailing the diverse courts of Axis (empire), the Queen's Woods (elves), and Drakkenhall (monsters!). As an added bonus, Robin's commentary joins the already scheduled back-and-forth between Rob & Jonathan.
$72,000 Tweet's Terrors
Jonathan wants to be sure that we stay in touch with our roots. He's going to design eight new pages of exotic monsters that channel the spirit of Arduin and other old school games we loved. Jonathan's write-ups will go a bit beyond our usual 13th Age style. Lee will provide monster tiles. Rob may be too intrigued to let it go without doing his own.
$76,000 Necropolis Unveiled
Robin Laws writes 16 pages on malevolent but strangely lawful undead and the island which is the Lich King's center of power.
$82,000 Necropolis Mapped
Profantasy Software creates a giant full-detail map of the Lich King's domain, the Necropolis at the center of the Midland Sea.
After 13 True Ways is done, Rob writes a 32+ page adventure that focuses on one of the six classes in the book as chosen by a vote of Kickstarter supporters. To be delivered as a PDF to all supporters of $50 and above. Illustrated by Lee and Aaron.
