About this project
The film, directed by YouTube star and filmmaker Luke Cutforth, is based on the acclaimed novel 'The Drowning of Arthur Braxton' by celebrated author Caroline Smailes; it is an unflinching account of the pain and trauma of adolescence, of how first love can transform the most unhappy of lives into something beautiful.
The book follows Arthur Braxton as he runs away from school and hides out in an abandoned building, a Victorian public baths. There he finds a naked woman swimming in the pool, the first in a series of circumstances that will change his life forever…
This is a dark and brooding modern fairy-tale of bullying, absent parents, self-harm, loss and, above all, love. Written by one of the UK’s most gifted authors, this story deserves a wider audience. Our film adaptation will stay true to the dark tone of the book, bringing to screen the affecting atmosphere that Caroline has created through her words.
We want you to join us in turning this wonderful book into a magical, sensitive and affecting film for the ages.

Through a serious of fortuitous meetings and collaborations we have secured the film option from publisher Harper Collins for this incredible book. Caroline trusted our vision for her story, and we are keen to make the film in the right way.
Finding funding for a film like this, whilst retaining the creative control we need in order to recreate the often bleak atmosphere of the book, was never going to be easy. But Kickstarter offers us the independence we need to make the film a faithful adaptation of The Drowning of Arthur Braxton, without diluting what makes it so special.
Our goal is set to £75,000, and this is the bare minimum we can make this film for. We’re passionate about this project, so we’ll be begging and borrowing as much of the equipment, and pulling in favours from friends and colleagues so that the money can be spent on making the film the best it can be.
When we hit our target, we will introduce new stretch goals – reaching these will allow us to make The Drowning of Arthur Braxton even bigger and better. Look out for these as they are introduced on the page and through updates.
Every new stretch goal we reach will not only include improvements to the final film, but new rewards and opportunities for our backers! If there are any new perks you’d like to see, let us know!

The opportunity to join us on this cinematic journey! And some really cool stuff.
From streams of the film, to posters, screenings and a chance to be in the film itself, getting involved in this project gets you access to some amazing Arthur Braxton rewards that you won’t find anywhere else. Luke (our very sexy director) will even follow you on twitter!
Finally, let us just say a big “thank you” for getting involved. If you can’t support the film through the rewards, please just share this page over your social media accounts, and with any friends/family/colleagues/wealthy pets.
Let’s get the word out in a big way, and make The Drowning of Arthur Braxton the amazing film it deserves to be!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge we face is doing filmic justice to a book that is so perfect. We want this film to be as good as it possibly can be whilst retaining our independence, to ensure we can make it our way.
If we raise the money we are trying to on Kickstarter, the film will get made, however, we will always maintain effective and regular communication with our backers, to resolve any issues that may occur with rewards etc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
