Sundance and other musings
Hello all you FIRE fanatics! How's that savings rate holding up thru the holidays?! I'm sure it's only gone up since things you normally buy are probably on sale. Ahhhh the holidays.
We wanted to share some developing news with you. We were informed last week that the film was not accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. There were 14,200 films submitted this year, and our film did not cast Zac Efron, Mindy Kaling or Jake Gyllenhaal... so I guess you can say were up against tall odds? A moment of silence... ok, that's enough sulking! Admittedly, this would have been a big deal for the film, and for those of us in the film industry. But overall, for the future of the film and the FIRE movement, it's beans. Because what matters most is that we have an entertaining, informative and emotional journey on our hands, which we most certainly do. Film Festivals are a heck of a lot of fun, and can generate buzz and interest in your film, but are not the gateway to distribution and press that they once were. And what we have is far more valuable, an amazing community of supporters who have already proven their generosity. So, with your help, we will continue to work our tails off to ensure this film is seen by many, and have fun doing it!
Which brings me to the screening tour! We are currently laying plans for a tour to kick off in early-mid February 2019, just a few short months away. We will be working with those in our cast and other supporters to bring this film to as many cities as we can. More details to come by year's end, we will keep you posted!
We are also making progress with the Kickstarter fulfillment. For those of you who have backed us, expect to see the "survey's" going out very soon. There, we will get the information we need to hold up our end of the bargain and start shipping goodies and lining up the experiences we offered. We are currently on track to share the book with you in early January and the film in mid-January. A huge thank you again for all the love and support.
Because of your generosity, we've been able to support a serious post-production team who is hard at work crafting the narrative. It will up the motion graphics, score and color game. It's made it possible to explore a robust theater release, and of course, given the optics to the Hollywood folks that this is a must-follow project for 2019.
We expect to have a "fine cut" of the film in a few short weeks. This means the story is pretty close to locked, the score and VO (voice-over) are in and we just have some final tweaks to make. At that point, we will be able to share the film with industry pro's and things should get interesting. We may find a distribution partner willing to help us take this film internationally. We may go it alone. We will keep you posted. Once the fine cut is passed around to a few select contributors for feedback, we will get to a "directors cut", where we will make a few tweaks to the story, mix the sound and color grade the footage to wrap up. We expect to have everything finished in early January, and you will be the FIRST humans to see that version.
Finally, we have also broken ground on editing Season 1 of the Playing with FIRE podcast, where we will be using the extended interviews we captured to produce a new kind of FIRE podcast for your listening enjoyment. More to come after the new year!
Stay FIRE'd up my friends. Record heat in 2019.
