We are Firebox.com, Shop for the Unusual.
We’re an innovative, design led, independent online retailer based in the heart of London. We create, source and sell an eclectic mix of exclusive, original and unusual products. This is why we love Kickstarter. Over the past few years we have followed and backed dozens of Kickstarter projects, many of which even ended up being sold on our site.
We also develop our own products in house, and inspired by the Kickstarter community we’ve decided to launch our next big idea here! We’d love like-minded people to come on the journey with us.
From the outset of this project we wanted to make sure that we could offer our backers something really worthwhile, exclusive, a genuinely special reward for getting behind us.
So we’ve teamed up with our friends (and Kickstarter veterans) Smoko who are kindly making us this ridiculously cute Baby Pufferfish Night Light. Get a load of this little guy!
Pledge £100 or more and you can get your hands on the Mega Mystery Box, packed full of Firebox.com best sellers.

- They put other boring slippers to shame
- Generous, elasticated foot opening - one size fits most (unless you have phenomenally impressive feet)
- Adorable facial expression, full of hope and longing
- Soft spines made out of felt
- Luxurious (and poison-free) plush exterior. Embroidered eyes and fishy freckles
- Tail and fins playfully flap about as you walk
The concept began with some rough and ready sketches. With its bulbous physique, prickly exterior, diminutive fins and friendly face - capturing the essence of the Pufferfish was no easy task.
After digitising some of the designs to see how they might look as slippers (some distinctly more terrifying than others), we took all of our favourite elements and combined them to create the quintessential Pufferfish.
We then worked out the sizing of the slippers, added measurements to the drawings and sent them over to a factory to help us make a sample.
Many months passed, here’s what they made… We named it ‘The Puffalo’ because it looks like the demented love-child of a Pufferfish and The Gruffalo.
In hindsight what they created is bordering on genius, just look at that splendid “mop” exterior - perfect for a pair of sea anemone slippers but definitely not what we had in mind.
At this point we approached a UK prototyping company to provide us with some proper patterns and spent a lot of time working with the factory on a few specific details to get them juuust right - like creating authentic Pufferfish spines out of soft fabrics.
Next came the ‘Freudian Slipper’ - with its blank, featureless eyes and unsettling mouth, it resembled something from a dream that we’d rather not examine in too much detail.
But. We were getting closer. We sent them some detailed feedback and crossed our fingers.
Armed with the finished pattern and prototype, we approached our original manufacturer again.
Several more weeks of tweaking/fine-tuning/chin-scratching/face-palming/crying/laughing and we’re now very proud to present the finished product.
What a magnificent little creature.
We’re always scanning the horizon for new design ideas and couldn’t believe this little guy had been overlooked. We think that the Pufferfish is one of the coolest creatures to have ever lived and deserves celebrating. As our video explains, there are loads of mad facts; like its elaborate mating rituals and how dolphins use it to get high!

As we continue to launch more ambitious projects, we feel the like-minded Kickstarter community is the perfect platform to do so.

Risks and challenges
Firebox.com has been trading since 1998 with a fully armed and operational warehouse.
Customer service has been, and always will be at the heart of Firebox. So you can be confident that we will deliver what we say we will when we say we will (even if that is an overcomplicated tongue-twister).
If any problems do arise, we promise that we’ll handle them with the utmost transparency and care for you, our benevolent backers.
We haven’t made our own slippers before but we’ve always stocked a strong range of plush and novelty slippers so we know exactly what we want in terms of the quality and finish. We‘ve worked very closely with a UK prototyping company to get the design just right; allowing us to hand over complete patterns and a sample for the manufacturer to follow. Whilst this is a new relationship, they are exceedingly experienced in all things plush and we believe that they’re the best people for the job.
The slippers will also be thoroughly tested by an internationally recognised testing house to comply with European and US regulations, and the stock will be independently quality checked before being shipped.
Supply Chain Risks:
If a container shipment is delayed in customs or a batch of slippers doesn't pass ‘Quality Assurance’ testing then our fulfillment schedule, even if padded, can start to slip. Naturally we would keep you guys up-to-date with all developments.
Acts of God:
There’s always a slim chance that NASA’s calculations were wildly inaccurate and the Earth will be consumed by the Sun before September 2016. Fingers crossed.
