MINIATURE SKULLS DIRECT FROM NATURE
Fire & Bone makes tiny, true-to-life, animal skull reproductions derived from high-resolution 3D scans of original specimens, carefully miniaturized in a digital process, then cast in metal using traditional techniques. Each skull pendant can be both worn and displayed on their optional wood collectors base.
This is our seventh Kickstarter collection and it includes nine new skull pendants, three new skull earrings, and a new line of pendants with inset gemstones!
THE SEVENTH COLLECTION!
Fire & Bone is celebrating 5 years of creating amazingly detailed natural history jewelry and collectibles by releasing our seventh Kickstarter collection! Our skull pendant library has grown to include more than 60 different species, plus we’ve added skull earrings & cufflinks, one-of-a-kind fossil pendants, and more. You can see and purchase all of our previous collections here.
In addition to nine new animals, we're also celebrating by launching a new and unique line of skulls adorned with gems and minerals that add a splash of color and a bit of sparkle.
THE NEW SKULL PENDANTS
The nine new skulls that can be both worn or displayed on the collectors base are:
The powerful Polar Bear - with a moveable jaw
The majestic Moose
The courageous Cougar (aka Mountain Lion, Puma) - with a moveable jaw
The mysterious Muntjac
The fluttering Fruit Bat
The tremendous Snapping Turtle
The fierce Pine Marten - with a moveable jaw
The armored nine-banded Armadillo
The elegant Blue Heron*!
The Polar Bear, Mountain Lion, and the Pine Marten all have articulated lower jaws; the Heron, Snapping Turtle, and Armadillo have fused lower jaws; the Fruit Bat, Muntjac, and Moose have no lower jaw.
We’re excited to offer 3 new pairs of earrings for this collection; The Merino Ram, Blue Heron, and Modern Human.
At about 10-15mm long, our skull earrings are tiny tiny versions of our already tiny skulls, and they still manage to retain that amazing Fire & Bone detail. Each earring animal is also available as a pendant on our web store.
NEW GEMSTONE SKULLS
Just like each of our previous Kickstarter campaigns, we’re introducing a totally new line of special skulls for this one. Inspired by our love of geology and mineralogy, we’ve created our first line of skulls adorned with real inset gemstones.
Who hasn't wondered what would happen if your favorite animal head-butted your favorite mineral collection? Well we've found the answer. These new gem skulls add an eye-catching pop of color and mineral curiosity to our collection.
We’ve chosen three of our favorite skulls (Owl Monkey, Goat, and Raven) and adorned them with one of four colorful stones to choose from.
Malachite - A copper-carbonate-hydroxide mineral, Malachite's deep green color (derived from its copper content) was associated with new life and fertility in ancient Egypt. The Egyptian god of verdant life and king of the underworld, Osiris, was depicted as a green man, often carved from solid malachite or colored using malachite pigment.
Amethyst - A purple variety of the silicate quartz, its name is derived from the ancient Greek word for "not drunk". Amethyst is believed by many cultures to bestow upon its wearer the ability to remain cool headed, calm, and clean of spirit.
Red Garnet - An aluminum-silicate mineral, red garnet was the gem of choice in the Roman empire. Its blood red color was believed to impart the stone with powers of healing, strength, and increased harm to enemies.
Peridot - A magnesium-iron-silicate born in earth's molten magma, peridot belongs to a family of minerals that exist in comets' tails, in meteorites as old as the solar system, and in dust clouds surrounding newly formed distant stars. Formed in geologic fire and cosmic light, peridot is believed to poses the ability to drive away darkness.
Our process begins by digitally scanning real animal skulls. We work with a company that uses a proprietary 3D scanning process to digitally capture animal skulls in very high detail. We are thrilled with the level of detail we get from this method, which isn't possible with consumer-level 3D scanners.
We then scale the pieces down to a size suitable for collection or jewelry. Our entire process is designed to retain an unprecedented amount of detail from the original specimen.
To make the final pieces, we reproduce the miniature model in wax with a professional level high-resolution 3D printer. With our wax model we make a master mold which allows us to cast the skulls in any metal using traditional lost-wax casting. We continue to work with a family owned foundry in the U.S. with decades of experience producing large production runs of small delicate pieces.
PLEDGING FOR MULTIPLE TIERS
If you'd like to pledge for multiple reward tiers, simply add up the total amount to cover each reward that you would like (but just select one reward at checkout). After the campaign, we will send you a survey where you can tell us exactly which items you would like.
For example, if you would like 1 skull pendant and 1 pair of skull earrings, pledge $68 ($35 + $33), but select just the "1 SKULL of YOUR CHOICE + CHAIN" reward at checkout, and then add the cost of shipping when prompted based on your location. We'll get your skull species and metal choices and shipping information after the campaign.
You will also have the opportunity to add items to your order after the campaign through BackerKit, including pieces from our previous campaigns! We'll ship everything together, which is especially useful for international backers.
FIRE & BONE + KICKSTARTER
We launched our very first campaign on Kickstarter in 2013 and we’ve been making these tiny skull ever since! With Kickstarter, we get to test demand for new skulls, and we have a great platform for communicating with fans. If this campaign is successful, we will be able to keep acquiring more hard-to-get skulls for our collection and building this project together with you.
Even though we have made some great steps since we first launched – you may see Fire & Bone pieces sold at your favorite natural history museum or oddity shop :) – we are still primarily three guys who do this as a passion. Kickstarter lets us find people who share that passion.
*Note that if the Blue Heron in this campaign looks familiar, that’s because it was released on our web store last year, but we wanted to make it available on Kickstarter and we thought this collection needed a bird :)

Risks and challenges
There can be production challenges associated with any manufacturing project (delays, equipment failure, theft, etc.), but we've been through this before and have a lot of confidence in our ability to fulfill this campaign in a timely fashion. We have built a strong working relationship with our foundry and are supremely confident in their ability to meet any level of demand.
Another unique challenge for us is that molds wear out over time. We have a lot of experience in jewelry design and metal casting, and we know how to plan for this. As many people have discovered, 3D scanning, design, and printing all require expertise. We are veteran users of these technologies and have worked in many high-stress situations to develop great products. Fire & Bone is not just a passion for us, it’s totally in our wheelhouse. Last, it's important to bear in mind the difficulty of getting access to more specimens for future castings - we definitely need your help to have a chance to scan more of these specimens.
