About this project
THE BIG PICTURE
We’re really excited to be back with Fire & Bone II, a brand-new collection of amazing, true-to-life jewelry and collectibles derived from real animal skulls.
Why are we so excited? Our amazing new collection includes a Dire Wolf, two additional bird species, a primate, a pair of cuff links, and, best of all, our very first dinosaur, the beautiful and terrifying Velociraptor!
Fire & Bone pieces take full advantage of exciting new technologies, including 3D scanning and 3D printing, to create something that's not available anywhere else: miniature skulls that are highly detailed and faithful to nature's design.
And, Fire & Bone skulls look beautiful both as pendants or when exhibited as collector's items.
Each skull is cast using traditional techniques, so Fire & Bone is both cutting edge and ancient; a modern twist on a timeless fascination with the animal world, perfect for the modern collector. And when you’re wearing a Fire & Bone piece, you carry the spirit of the animal around with you.
We’ve taken what we learned from our first campaign to add to our collection of skulls and improve them with more detail and scientific accuracy than ever before. We just need your help to put it in motion!
There are 7 all new skulls, including our first dinosaur, the awesome Velociraptor.
And, a fearsome Dire Wolf (Yes, it was a real animal)!
We developed a new modeling technique that improves on everything we learned during our first campaign to give the Dire Wolf a beautifully articulated jaw.
In addition to seven new specimens, one of our most popular skulls from our first campaign is now our first fashion accessory: the Gray Wolf cufflinks.
We’ve continued to hone our craft at every level and these new skulls are our best yet. With higher resolution 3D scans, a better 3D printer, and an improved polishing technique, the new skulls are fantastic.
The incredible level of detail is fine enough to let you appreciate the animal’s teeth, horns, cranial structure, and more.
We’ve even acquired better, Made-in-the-US, 24" chains. And for those naturalists who love to exhibit Fire & Bone skulls rather than wear them, we’ve refreshed the design of the species label on the optional wooden display stands.
THE NEW COLLECTION
And members of any and all wolf packs should note that our Gray Wolf skull is now available as a set of eye-catching cuff links.
Each piece in our second collection is available in solid white or yellow bronze, or sterling silver.
Every piece can be worn on the included chain or exhibited on one of our optional wood display stands. The display stand is made of beautiful walnut stained birch and lacquered for protection. It is optional and not included with every reward tier.
3D Scanning & Miniaturization
Our process begins by digitally scanning real animal skulls. We work with a company that uses a proprietary 3D scanning process to digitally capture animal skulls in very high detail. We are thrilled with the level of detail we get from this method, which isn't possible with consumer-level 3D scanners.
We scale the piece down to a size suitable for collection or jewelry. Because we do this digitally and not manually, we retain an unprecedented amount of detail from the original skull.
To make the final pieces, we reproduce the miniature model in wax with a professional level high-resolution 3D printer.
With our wax model we make a master mold which allows us to cast the skulls in any metal using traditional lost-wax casting.
We work with a family owned foundry in the U.S. with decades of experience producing large production runs of small delicate pieces.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
The experience of our first Kickstarter project was better than we could have imagined. We accomplished everything we hoped to, including opening a successful online store, selling our skulls in some world renowned Natural History museums and, being able to source rare skulls from extinct animals - but we want to do even more!
Our passionate, amazing backers from the first campaign gave us feedback that we are thrilled to incorporate into the new collection. Things like improving the articulated jaw, better chains, and adding birds and a dinosaur specimen to the Fire & Bone family. Now we want to take it to the next level! Your support allows us to keep building this project and adding amazing specimens and one-of-a-kind accessories to our collection. We are happy that we have not had to compromise our commitment to a beautiful, high quality product. Another campaign lets us expand with the same integrity. We’ll source more highly sought-after skulls, including more dinosaurs and other fossil specimens, and we’ll be able to explore more types of products in addition to pendants and cufflinks.
In particular, we found that gaining access to dinosaur skulls was more difficult and expensive than we had anticipated - one of the most important uses for the funds from this campaign will be to scan more of these delicate and prehistoric specimens. With your help, we’ll be able to make even more amazing things in the future!

Risks and challenges
There can be production challenges associated with any manufacturing project (delays, equipment failure, theft, etc.), but we've been through this before and have a lot of confidence in our ability to fulfill this campaign in a timely fashion. We have built a strong working relationship with our foundry and are supremely confident in their ability to meet any level of demand.
Another unique challenge for us is that molds wear out over time. We have a lot of experience in jewelry design and metal casting, and we know how to plan for this.
As many people have discovered, 3D scanning, design, and printing all require expertise. We are veteran users of these technologies and have worked in many high-stress situations to develop great products. Fire & Bone is not just a passion for us, it’s totally in our wheelhouse.
Last, it's important to bear in mind the difficulty of getting access to more dinosaur bones for future castings - we definitely need your help to have a chance to scan more of these specimens.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
