WE ONLY HAVE A COUPLE OF  DAYS TO GO! PLEASE BACK US!

SO, WHAT IS THE SOLAR CAMPAIGN?

Thank you for visiting our Kickstarter page! Please take your time, watch our video and read the information below to find out who we are and what we're doing. And don't forget to check out the side bar to see the awesome rewards you will receive based on your contribution to fund our project. Note that you will not be charged unless we are fully funded.

WHO WE ARE

Firdaus Kharas and friend
Firdaus Kharas and friend

Firdaus Kharas is a pioneering social innovator who creates animated video campaigns which provide innovative solutions to some of the world's toughest issues. The campaigns cause societal and individual behavioral change across cultures and countries to better the human condition around the world. Firdaus has been honored over 70 times for his work including a prestigious Peabody Award and the United Nations Peace Medal.

Cathy Cook is the international communicator, information networker and fifth estater who helps Firdaus get his messages out to the world.

WHAT WE DO

We work with a team of seriously talented volunteers to create short humorous animated videos ("shorts") to raise awareness of global issues and create an environment where people feel able to discuss them. Some of Firdaus' previous award-winning campaigns include The Three Amigos (HIV/AIDS):

and No Excuses (domestic and sexual violence):

Firdaus' past campaigns have received strong support from Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the United Nations, and people around the world. He's been written up in hundreds of newspapers and magazines and his campaigns have been seen by millions from Africa to the Middle East and South Asia.

WHAT WE ARE CREATING

The Solar Campaign is an integrated, high-impact, global, multilingual, behavior-change communications series of short animated videos ("shorts") designed to increase awareness of solar energy in general and the use of solar lights in particular.

The Solar Campaign seeks to increase demand in the developing world for solar lighting, in particular solar-powered lights for consumer use as part of the United Nations-led effort to increase access to energy.

We've created the first shorts in English but many people in the developing world don't speak English and messages are best delivered in people's native tongue. Our project hopes to raise funds to translate ("version") the animation into five different languages.

If we raise more than our goal we'll version the shorts into even more languages. Our ultimate goal is to version them into 73 languages across the developing world.

WHY ANIMATION?

Animation:
• is globally accepted
• works are non-realist
• allows the suspension of disbelief
• is easy to translate and easy to sync into other languages
• can reach any audience
• allows the creation of universal characters
• allows for innovation
• is the easiest way to reach very large numbers
• is highly cost effective
• provides more choices
• allows for a variety of formats for distribution
• allows for a variety of lengths, topics and possibilities
• is perfect for distribution via mobile devices
• can be interactive

HOW CAN YOU BE INVOLVED?

Your funds will be used to translate the shorts into five different languages; native speakers will provide the voiceovers; and the videos will be burned to DVD and distributed. They will be shown around the world to people in remote areas, used by schools and NGOs, broadcast by tv and radio stations, and played in homes and on cell phones. Fund our project and we will give you some terrific gifts including signed images of the animations and DVDs of the shorts!

CAN WE EXCEED OUR GOAL?

We need $7,500 to version the series into five different languages but we need to exceed this as our ultimate goal is to translate the shorts into 73 languages and change the lives of more people around the globe!

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS

Kickstarter is powered by an all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. In other words, if we don’t raise our goal of $7,500, we don't get a cent. If we reach our goal we will reach out and send those terrific gifts to you (along with our tremendous thanks).

HOW TO FUND US

Just click the “Back This Project” button in the upper right-hand corner. You will be asked to input your funding amount. From there, you will go through the Amazon checkout process. You must complete the Amazon checkout process for your pledge to be recorded.

WHAT IF WE DON’T REACH OUR GOAL?

If funding fails, all pledges are canceled and that's that. Your card is not charged, it’s like nothing ever happened. We hope this doesn't happen! Those days will fly by, donate today!

CAN YOU DONATE ON BEHALF OF SOMEONE ELSE?

Of course! We will contact you once funding is complete to gather information so that we can get your incentives to you. Just let us know the name you would like to donate under.

CAN YOU DONATE OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES?

Yes and Yes! Just click on the Amazon Payment Button and you will see that you can pay with a credit card from any country! But you must finish the Amazon checkout process for your pledge to be recorded. If you have any problems just contact us.

WANT TO HELP BUT CAN’T DONATE?

Spread the word about the Solar Campaign and our products in your community. We’d love to discuss partnering with you, your organization, your community to help get the word out about the campaign and our work. Please contact us to further discuss this. And of course we need your help broadcasting the Kickstarter campaign. Facebook it. Tweet it. G+ it. Pinterest it. Blog it. Sing it from the mountain tops. Let's get people using solar powered lights.

Risks and challenges

Everything depends on translating the text and ensuring the words used are relevant to the local people. We also pick the right people to do the voice overs. Firdaus has used terrific local people in the past and we hope to use their skills once the text has been written. Then it's off to the studios to record, mix and overlay the voices with the animation. Once we have the funding we can choose which five languages to version first. With your help we can do all five as quickly as possible.
