Anamnesis is a new sci-fi thriller web series about a group of strangers who realize they are connected by shared, lucid dreams. Based on the short film “Anamnesis” (which serves as a prologue to the series), we want this show to be a giant puzzle: an ongoing mystery involving the dreams of interconnected characters.
We’re already in pre-production on this series and are gearing up to start shooting. We’ve spent months working on scripts for the first 4 episodes, which will serve as a massive, multi-part “pilot” for the show (about an hour of total content).
While we have a small budget to get us started as we prepare to shoot these four episodes, we need to raise an additional $10,000 to get us through production and post-production. With Anamnesis, we are looking to go above and beyond the expectations for a traditional web series with Hollywood-level production values, incredible actors, and a sprawling sci-fi story that we’ve already mapped out and planned in great detail.
We’re so incredibly excited to tell this story, but we need your help. If we’re unable to reach or surpass our fundraising goal, we won’t be able to fund our ambitious 24-day shoot and the subsequent post-production (which will involve an incredible amount of work in editing, visual effects, color grading, sound design, and music). We won't be able to rent the locations and studio sets needed to fully realize our vision for this series, which often cost thousands of dollars per day.
In short, we won’t be able to bring our vision fully to life--a vision that includes sprawling dreamscapes, unforgettable characters, and an epic, twisting story that will go to some very unexpected places.
Who’s doing it?
Last year, three filmmakers (Alex Calleros, Ryan McDuffie, Michael Tucker) came together to attempt an ambitious project: create one short film for the web, every month, for a year. To make things even more interesting, each film was based on constraints submitted by the public. Check out all 12 films we produced (and the constraints that inspired them) at finite-films.com.
Now, we’re teaming up with our good friends at filmskillet.com to create an original web series based on one of our most popular films, “Anamnesis.” You can watch the short film right now, right here:
We're also delighted to announce that Finite Films is teaming up with British researcher and lucid dreaming expert Daniel Love, who will be acting as a consultant to the show. With Anamnesis, we want to create a web series that portrays the lucid dream experience in a realistic, accurate way, and we couldn't be more excited to have him on board! His book, Are You Dreaming? Exploring Lucid Dreams: A Comprehensive Guide, which will be released on January 1, will serve as an indispensable guide as we begin shooting Anamnesis.
Our year producing films for Finite Films was an incredible experience. While it was one of the hardest things we’ve ever done, it was also incredibly freeing to be able to tell the stories we wanted to tell, inspired by you, the viewer, rather than investors or studios. It was this freedom that allowed us to make films like “Anamnesis” in the first place.
Our goal is to bring you the kind of series we’d want to watch: a show that is smart, fast-paced, with great characters and an engrossing story that only gets better and more complex with each passing episode.
*SPOILER ALERT* (You may want to watch “Anamnesis” before reading any further)
“Anamnesis” (the short film) takes place entirely in the mind of Adam, a young man whose life is flashing before his eyes in the moments before his death. While this might seem like the end of the story, it’s only the beginning.
The web series will pick up right where the short film left off: in the aftermath of Adam’s death and the chain of events that follow. We get to know Hannah, Adam’s fiancee, as she tries to understand the reasons behind his sudden, violent death. We’re introduced to a new cast of characters, including Sean, a lucid dreamer who begins to prefer his dreams to reality; Vera, a fiercely independent tech wizard who is plagued by night terrors; and Noah, a happily married man who has a sneaking suspicion that there’s something wrong with his reality.
Each 12-minute episode of the series will weave together these characters’ respective stories as they begin to realize that they are all connected in a profound way.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Even if we reach our goal of $10,000, accomplishing the first four episodes of this web series will be a huge challenge. We'll still be operating on a micro-budget given the scope of the story we're telling. One of the biggest obstacles we always face is finding filming locations that are right for the story, but also don't gobble up the entire budget. For Anamnesis, we need to film in a wide variety of locations including a 1950's diner, a hospital, and a psychiatrist's office. Finding studio sets or actual real-world locations that will allow us to film for days at time--but also won't break the bank--is one of our biggest challenges right now.
Scheduling our busy cast and crew for upwards of 24 days of shooting is also going to be a monumental task. As we found during our first year of creating content for Finite Films, just getting a cast and crew together on the same day, in the same place, is like putting together massive a jigsaw puzzle--and the pieces are changing.
Despite these challenges, we'll find a way to make this series happen, no matter what. Whether that means calling up every single person we know to get a lead on a location, or being flexible as the schedules of our cast and crew (inevitably) change, we're committed to bringing this show to life. It might mean occasionally re-writing or adjusting our scripts to fit locations that are more readily available to us, or re-thinking a sequence to make it more feasible. But bottom line, we'll find a way to make this project a reality, no matter what!
The walk-on role Perk will give the contributor a chance to play a bit part in one of our episodes. It will likely be a role such as a customer in a coffee shop, making an order. So the part may include one or two lines, and a bit of screen time... plus the fun of getting to hang out on a Finite Films set for a day!
If I claim the Associate Producer or Executive Producer Perks, what does that mean? Do I own part of the web series? Do I get creative control?
The Associate Producer and Executive Producer Perks give you a chance to be featured in our end credits as some of our most important contributors. However, these titles are in name only--a special honor in our credits as a thank you for your donation--not an official position as part of the Anamnesis crew. Film Skillet and Finite Films will be co-producting the show and have sole creative and financial control over the project.
Digital downloads of the Anamnesis desktop background, Anamnesis (the short film) HD video and the original short film soundtrack (available at the $1, $10 and $25 contribution levels) will be available shortly after the fundraiser ends in early January.
If you donate $35 or more, you can also claim a digital download of the brand new soundtrack being composed for the web series. However, since we will still be actively working on the series through January and February, we can not guarantee the web series soundtrack will be available until after the series is completed and premieres online. Rest assured, you will receive the soundtrack as soon as possible once it's done!
The project has already reached its goal! Should I still donate? What will the extra money be used for?
Our goal of $10,000 was the bare minimum we need to raise in order to move forward with the web series, but we could use much, much more. Every additional dollar that's pledged to this project will go towards creating better visual effects, better music, better locations...better everything, really. We're still operating on a bare-bones budget for a project of this scale and ambition, so every bit helps!
