About

Have you ever sat down at the table to play a game and ended up laughing, sometimes groaning, but generally having a good time? So have we--with family and friends playing Final Minutes, the Zombie Apocalypse. We didn't create it to sell. We made it to have fun.

This is how Final Minutes, the Zombie Apocalypse looks after over a year of development and testing. Players 1-8, ages 8 and up.
This is how Final Minutes, the Zombie Apocalypse looks after over a year of development and testing. Players 1-8, ages 8 and up.

Shortly after Christmas of 2017, with snow swirling outside and the smell of pumpkin pie still drifting around the kitchen, my teenage kids and I began playing with an idea of a new game. Like most homes, we have a lot of games: board games, card games, video games and even role-playing games. In most of these games we compete against each other.

Having recently watched World War Z, zombies were on our minds, so we thought, "What if we made a game where players work together to survive the zombie apocalypse?" They said, "Why not?" and I said, "Why not?" And then we all said... well, you get the idea.

We decided to use six sided dice as zombie tokens. It would allow us to track both the life and movements of the individual zombies. After raiding other games for dice, Final Minutes the Zombie Apocalypse was born.

                                                              The very first prototype board
The very first prototype board

We designed it for 1-8 people and it went through a lot of playing with family and friends. Multiple rules and variations were tried and discarded. How the weapons are acquired and what weapons were available took a few debates.

On every turn each player may use three or more actions from multiple possibilities. Actions are moving, picking up a weapon, trading weapons with another player, or using a weapon or ability. After all the players have moved and/or attacked, the zombies get to move and attack if able. That's where the game gets scary. Although the players can outrun one zombie, there are usually enough of the undead on the board to make staying alive a real challenge.

There is also a deck of cards, the Danger Deck, that cards are drawn from each round before the zombies move. Some of the cards are good and can help the players, and some of the cards are bad. Other cards are very bad. And a few are very, very, very bad.

Character Player Mat Concept
Character Player Mat Concept

We are still putting the finishing touches on the player mats. We've adopted the idea of having some turn instructions on them as well as life tracking and the characters abilities.

Each of the eight characters has a unique skill and weapon bonus. Summer Jackson is a college athlete who can run farther than the other characters. Earle Vernie can take damage to save other players. Meredith Wong confuses the zombies with a disguise, making her able to take chances the other players don't dare. Angel Fuentes has the gift of luck. Pastor Mcgillicuddy has the skill of healing. Lupe Ramirez can use camouflage. If he meets certain criteria, Timothy Jones can earn a second turn. Jeanie Rose is a great defender who can strengthen the base.

How you use the characters' abilities can help you and the group to survive.

The red tokens are placed around the board face-down. Each has a number that corresponds to one of the weapons. All a player has to do is go to a red token, reveal the weapon and pick it up. Easy, right? That depends on how close the zombies are.

The weapons have different range and damage capabilities. Which one you use will determine how close the zombies have to be and how many you can hit. The flame thrower can damage up to five zombies at one time, but they have to be close. Be careful! If your damage roll isn't high enough you might get eaten by five singed zombies.

In our early games we played purely because we liked the idea of cooperating against the zombies. It was fun. As it evolved, it generated a lot of interest. My kids and I began wondering what it would take to market the game.

I will mention here that I have been inventing games for years, but I have always made them just for my friends and family. Old friends of mine still sometimes tell me they play games that I made years ago. But I have never tried to market one before. So, when the first rendition of Final Minutes became somewhat stable, we had boards and cards printed, and then sent copies around the United States to friends and associates to Beta test for us. We needed to know if other people would enjoy the game.

A fairly typical game about halfway through.
A fairly typical game about halfway through.

The Beta testers were a great help, their input allowed for many changes that improved game play. Super Zombies were introduced, that move farther and do twice as much damage as regular zombies. The conditions that start additional waves of zombies were improved, and any player that dies now becomes a zombie. The first to die is a King Zombie who can control zombies around them! (Yes, some players try to die quickly so they can make everyone else miserable!)

The Zombie King in gold. The other skulls are for other players who turn into zombies.

Play time varies with the number of players. A full-scale original game with eight players can be as short as twenty minutes if several players have really poor luck, or take an hour and half and up to two and a half hours. It speeds up with less players. The Short Game variation usually takes 20-40 minutes no matter how many play. There is also a timed version where each player keeps a kill count and the game can be as long or short as you like.

Because of all the help, ideas and feedback we received, we were able to make some fairly large changes while preserving the main ideas of the game. With the addition of the Zombie King and the short play variation, Final Minutes, the Zombie Apocalypse plays well and contains white-knuckled trepidation whenever the dice are rolled. And it causes higher heart rates than most other board games!

No matter which difficulty level of the game you play; whether normal, hard, or insane, or which of the characters you choose, you will have times when everyone cheers, and times when players cry out in anguish. It's a tough game, but a lot of fun.

This sort of thing happens a lot in this game. Stupid zombies.

If you like gaming, and you like a challenge where skill and chance are both involved, then you will like this game. If you are also one of those select few who doesn't want to be eaten by the zombies, then Final Minutes, the Zombie Apocalypse is definitely for you!

Risks and challenges

As long as the zombies don't break through the barricades we anticipate being able to fulfill by the projected dates. Negotiations with large scale production companies may take some time but we have the names and contact information ready to go. We also hope to be able to research what we can accomplish with customized 3D playing peices.
