About

In late 2017 FILMA formed with the intention of promoting Oakland area arts through four core principles:  Consent, Discovery, Interaction, and Immersion.  FILMA's first collective conceptual immersion installation, Amongst the Vines, found beauty in dystopia, providing a unique perspective on the world as it is today and how we might leverage all that is wrong for something truly amazing.

Amongst the Vines flyer

Wormhole was originally created as the third segment of a three segment trash-to-tech tunnel at Amongst the Vines called Akashan Horizon.  A gradient between trash and technology, participants would start the tunnel surrounded by art made from trash.  As Akashan Horizon progresses, the calm edge of the world offers a final serene space while something fantastic awaits, beckoning with glowing lights and a flirtatious unknown.  Wormhole was the final stage of Akashan Horizon where all who pass through it are transformed into their next selves.

Wormhole at Amongst the Vines

For me (Carl, the guy writing this little blurb and founder of FILMA), the concept of Akashan Horizon was a metaphor describing my journey through and away from alcoholism.  Starting at trash, we know there's something wrong, yet we understand that there's still something unique and amazing found within.  As we progress through the tunnel, eventually you come to Wormhole which is bright, magnificent, and mysterious.  Finally, once you've gone through the wormhole, when you've taken the steps and completed your journey, well... you've become something else entirely.  Wormhole is very dear to me on a personal level, though each artist finds their own transformation metaphor contained therein.

Since Amongst the Vines the Wormhole has become FILMA's most popular art installation being displayed at 4 events, and presently has two more events booked for this year; we estimate 3 to 4 thousand people have experienced Wormhole to date and we are expecting a few thousand more by the end of 2019.  Wormhole has won one grant as well, our first grant, and we're very proud of it.

Placard for our first grant!

Wormhole is a 20 foot long, 8 foot wide, and 8 foot high sound-reactive LED tunnel presently consisting of 1200 individually addressable, weather proof, LEDs.  The wormhole listens to its environment and responds via an array of real time generated effects relative to the sounds heard.  Conceived and built by FILMA with light-engineering by the magician, Robert Graf (who happens to be the star of our kickstarter video).  Finally, we're currently in-progress on a new frame, designed and engineered by the fabulous William Burdette; it will be replacing the large black structure in the photos you see here today.

With Wormhole's present success, we are motivated to make improvements to the wormhole aimed exclusively at taking people's breath away.  Your contributions will specifically be used to:

  •  Double the light density -- that's 2400 lights!
  •  Create a new modular electronics array -- this will help with transportation, customizing the wormhole for unique environments, and allow us to add new interactions (ever play Tempest?)
  •  Manufacture reusable components - We care about the environment and are ready to get away from zip ties and batteries.  We can manufacture reusable plastic parts and custom electronics that will allow us to make more efficient use of our planets resources.

We're overwhelmed with Wormhole's potential and look forward to working with our community to make bring the wormhole to the next level.

For the first build we didn't yet have an art space so... we built it on the sidewalk. The whole neighborhood stopped by to see the 20 foot light wonder!
Amongst the Vines. The Wormhole is covered in black cloth and served as a distinct separation between two themes of the show.

Risks and challenges

There are various risks associated with the project, as with any project. Like most technical expeditions, what works on paper and what works in real life are somewhat at odds. As we scale the Wormhole to 2400 lights, we may find new challenges in data processing, electrical subsystems, or even require structural enhancements (by our numbers these things won't happen, but we've been wrong before).

When it comes to technical surprises, we do our best to build contingencies in our plan. We rarely like to embark on work without knowing what we're going to do if something doesn't; in other words, we always have a plan b (and usually a plan c). Sometimes these plans will be things we can address on our own (software) and in other cases they may require additional investment or time (i.e. if we break a part there are a number of ways we might approach repairing it).

Another challenge will be that of the schedule. While we take our time to bid out the amount of time it will take us to make enhancements, bidding is more art than science (I do this work in software all the time, everyone is always wrong). In addition to technical surprises, life has a way of introducing delays in your workflow. What will they be? We have no idea. Maybe a pipe will burst in our art space, or we'll discover we need a new permit. Maybe one of our artists will have a life event requiring their full attention. We don't know what we don't know, though one thing we do know is that we're incredibly good at staying the course (even when that course is slowed).

Risks and challenges are part of the excitement and we're used to surprises at this point. We've built a bunch of art, including Wormhole V1.0, and have learned a ton. The learning will continue with version 2.0 but we are confident in our ability to adjust to whatever unknown situations arise.
