Who are we?
We are a band called Field Mouse, started by Rachel Browne and Andrew Futral in 2010. Since then, we have put out a few 7" singles and music videos, gone on national tours, and played a zillion shows around our homebase of Brooklyn, NY. We've played with a lot of different friends on the rhythm section, and now with a solid lineup and a ton of songs, and want to make our first real album as Field Mouse happen. If you don't know anything about us but would like to know more, please check out fieldmousemusic.com!
What are you hoping to fund?
- Hours of studio time at Seaside Lounge, a wonderful local establishment
- Paying for mixing
- Paying for mastering
What is the breakdown of the cost?
Recording is booked in 10 hour blocks at costs $400 per block. Guitars, bass, and vocals will take about 12 days to record. This adds up to roughly $5000.
Mixing a record is a time-consuming process and it tends to cost a good amount of money. Based on our experience, we can pay about 200 a song. This means it will cost between $2,000 and $2,500 to mix.
Mastering is notoriously expensive and will end up being roughly $1,000 as well.
As of yet, the LP is not attached to any specific label. Though this will change once the record is complete, it still means that we are fully responsible for paying for the album's production. We all have jobs and we are all working very hard at them to pay our apartment rent, practice space rent, and sometimes even food. This Kickstarter project is to help give us the "advance" that a record label isn't. There is no way for us to make the album we want to make with our personal income alone. Some sweet day, if a label gives us a real advance, we will be able to spend that on a halfway decent van so that we can tour more frequently and see each one of your faces!
Thank you so much for your interest in this project!
Risks and challenges
We are making this album during a time when it's incredibly difficult for bands to make any profit off of their album sales. We intend to sign with a label once the album is fully complete, but until we iron out how the album is going to be released, we won't know the exact timeframe. Should this project be successful, recording will take place this August and September, and the album will be finished and ready to go by October. Since we do not intend to self-release it, however, we can't be fully sure of the exact release date. We will be super communicative about everything as soon as we have any information, and always here to answer any questions. As we mentioned above, this fundraiser is necessary for us to make a full studio album in the absence of an advance from a label, as we do not have one yet.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
