A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Slothy Soil is a perfect soil with a new organic fertilizer which feeds a plant sustainable fitted to the real need of it.
Slothy Soil - Faultiererde ist eine neuartige Kulturerde, basierend auf organischen Bestandteilen. Der enthaltene Dünger ist zu 100% biologisch und zu 100% in Deutschland hergestellt.
Slothy Soil is a new gardening earth based on organic components. The fertilizer used is 100% organic and 100% manufactured in Germany. The earth used is qualified for the EU-norm of organic soil. Slothy Soil is produced with reduced peat content. Additionally it contains volcanic rock.
The organic nutrient is embedded in the soil so that it can not be washed out by water anymore. Only the plants growing on the soil can actively consume the nutrient with help from the microorganisms that inhabit any wholesome soil.
The fertilizer is produced by a new method that allows the plant to feed from the soil without any additional fertilizer for a complete growing cycle and achieves the best harvest possible.
With Slothy Soil the nutrient availability for the plant is at the same high level for the whole time of the growth. Using normal fertilizer the availability of nutritents goes up and down between very high levels and low levels. This can end in over-fertilizing. With Slothy Soil this is not possible.
The method we developed is to encapsulate the organic fertilizer with a special process of production so that it is not soluble by water. Instead the plant can use the nutrients and minerals it needs by letting Mycorrhiza fungi (common in normal soil – and needed by almost all plant species anyway) to extract exactly what the plant needs from the added organic fertilizer. Regardless of the growth phase the plant is in, it can always regulate its nutrient intake according to its needs.
With this ready-made soil you don’t have to think about anything. Just plant your plants and take care that your plants get their water and enough light. Nature and Slothy Soil will do the rest. Slothy Soil is super easy to use. So even people with little spare time can have very nice plants.
The use of fertilizers is not required until the first harvest has been yielded. The soil is sufficient for a one-season culture of tomato, cucumber, rose or other plants that consume a lot of nutrients. For plants like herbs, cacti and other plants that don’t consume much nutrient, it will last at least two years without any additional nutrition. Slothy Soil contains volcanic rock for a better air supply of the roots.
This is the first product in a line of products we want to produce. As a starter we chose a full-life-cycle mix. We named it Slothy Soil - Terra Palaeolithicalis - Seed to crop. All bags in this kickstarter will contain this Slothy Soil.
Since several years, we have been researching how fertilizer has an impact on soil organisms, plants, animals and humans. In our studies, we could again see that synthetic (mineral based) fertilizer disturbs the ecological balance. From this arises a risk to the soil organisms and the sustainable use of soil for plants. Likely there is also a higher risk for the health of animals and humans, especially through the consumption of heavy metals and nitrogen residudes, that also pollute the drinking water when used in agriculture.
During our science studies, we developed a new method to produce a new green fertilizer that is able to feed the plant sustainably, fitted to the real need of the plant. This works so well that each plant (independent of species or cultivation) can regulate how much of the fertilizer it needs for its own optimal growth.
Furthermore it works so well that you cannot over-fertilize or under-fertilize your plants anymore, as the plant and only the plant is now able to activate each individual component of the nutrient just when it needs it. No additional fertilizer, synthetic or organic is needed anymore when you use our premade planting soil. This works for plants that can only tolerate very small amounts of nutrients like the cactus family or fern as well as for those requiring the most, like greenhouse tomatoes, roses and cucumber. We are so proud that we named our discovery Slothy Soil, because it allows us to lean back lazily after planting. Good harvests and the finest quality of fruits and vegetables, as well as good growth of other green plants is guaranteed.
Regardless of the growth phase the plant is in, it can always regulate its nutrient intake according to its needs. Furthermore, the fertilizer cannot be washed from the substrate because it is not soluble by water. There will be no more losses of fertilizer through rain or watering. This works ideally even with an automated irrigation system.
Therefore Slothy Soil is not only perfect for all kinds of ornamental flowers and vegetables grown at home or in your garden or in any professional garden or nursery, it is also perfect to recultivate wasteland or sandy grounds like deserts and old industrial areas. It is also highly suited for urban gardening on roofs and in city areas. Our method is highly economical and thus, it conserves nature and helps it to regenerate. Therefore, we hope we can use our development to support restoration projects, especially in third world countries to enable farmers there to recover farming grounds that have been lost to desertification. Landscapes destroyed by human made hazards, environmental pollution or
intensive farming with synthetic fertilizers can be remade to flowering meadows and fields.
Our Kickstarter campaign goal
First of all we want to produce a new soil-mix for everyone - the best quality soil available mixed with our organic long time fertilizer. We want to name this product Slothy Soil. To get the best product we tested Slothy Soil for about a year in our lab with living plants and are now happy to present the finished product to you! This soil can be used for all kind of indoor plants, plants on your balcony, for fruits and vegetables outdoors and indoors. Even plants with a very high need of nutrition can be easily grown and brought to flower and fruit with our product.
We would like to produce a soil for commercial horticulture. This would allow organic farmers to harvest the same results in quantity as traditional farmers do with mineral-based fertilizers but with the quality in taste and smell that only organically grown products can have. Therefore, it would boost organic farming all around the world. If we sell enough of the soil, we will start building factories in underdeveloped countries, so that local people will be able to produce our substrate where it is needed the most. Farmers in underdeveloped countries all around the globe could start to farm organically and efficiently, thus reducing poverty and hunger for many people. Fighting hunger is a prime goal that can bring peace and sustainable development to the world. Our soil could help a bit to reach that goal; because it would help, people to develop a perspective in the country they are living in.
Why a sloth?
Because Sloth are cute and we just love them.
Our Earth, during the Pleistocene, provided food for the gigantic herds of mega herbivores like the Mammoth, Woolly Rhinos and the Megatherium (the giant Sloth). The soil was rich and was fertilized by the droppings of these mega-mammals – a paradise until the time humans started to dwell in these territories. As a result, the mega-mammals became extinct, ending the natural process of fertilizing. The green and fertile land with unlimited powers of self-regeneration ended when this fauna was gone. The soil was of lower quality for ever after. Woodlands started to grow and the world changed its look. Now we found a way to bring this paradise on earth back to life. You do the planting and the watering; Slothy Soil does everything else. After planting, you can lean back like a sloth and wait for the harvest. That’s why we chose the sloth as the character for our logo, as the giant ground-sloth, was one of the inhabitants of this flowering and blooming Pleistocene that ended 10,000 years ago.
It would be great if we could get your support, because such a project cannot be brought to life together with a big company which is interested in selling synthetic fertilizer. If we would finance our project with the aid of a big enterprise, the risk would be too high that our formula gets locked away and would never be brought to life. We believe that such projects to improve the world can only be achieved with the power of people like you!
What your support means and what you will get:
First you help us to bring Slothy Soil to life. We would love to see this new soil used all around the globe to help improve ecological growth of plants AND we will send you our Slothy Soil for your own outdoor or indoor gardens to plant and harvest without risk and without the need of any additional fertilizer.
You can go for one pledge and add as many bags as you want by adding additional 12 € ($13) per bag. However, you also have to pay more € or $ for the increased shipping cost if you want more than 10 bags as shown on the table further down. Soil is a heavy product, so it limits how much we can ship as a package. In the section shipping cost we have broken down what we have to charge for the shipping. Please take time to read it. We have also added a table where the pledge amount for a specific number of bags is shown. If you send the wrong amount for the shipping cost don’t worry, we will contact you in this case and transfer anything back that we receive too much.
If you don´t have a place or time for gardening you can still help us and our projects by gifting the soil to somebody you know who has plants at home. You can also gift Slothy Soil to an uncommercial urban gardening project. We asked some projects we know here in Germany and they would be most grateful for any donation.
If you want a complete set to test our soil and a fast start for your plants you can also choose our pledge level "A home for saplings and soil
" We then send to you a greenhouse for indoor growing, with ventilation flaps and a cover (38 x 24 x 17 cm) and one bag of 10 L (~0.35 ft^3) finest mix of Slothy Soil. This pledge level is at 26 € ($29).
What is left to do?
We have not developed a final design or a packing foil for production. Nevertheless, we have the soil, the components and the production site. We have also done a test run of production and were highly satisfied with the result. While this campaign runs, we will complete these outstanding tasks and let the production start as soon as the campaign ends. This will ensure that you will be getting your soil as quickly as possible after the end of the campaign. The only thing that we really need to start is you!
We don´t know how much funding we will raise, so we will wait a few days while the campaign has started before we announce the stretch goals. However, if the funding goal is reached we can think of several stretch goals. First, we could upgrade the packaging foil of the soil to ensure a better handling. Another thing would be the development of more different soils, like a light version of our soil with less fertilzer, which would be cheaper per bag. We could also go for a specialized earth for cacti, orchids or bonsais. Although the actual structure of our soil already works well with cacti and bonsais it could be optimized specially for these varieties. A derivation of our product could also be used for orchids. We would finalize this product and make it available if we reach a number high enough. We will build up a list when the campaigns runs. We are also open to any suggestions from you!
Shipping heavy goods like soil is always expensive. Shipping to other countries is even more expensive.
But! The more you want, the less expensive the shipping cost get per bag. We calculated this again and again and we think our solution is a fair deal. We will
The first factor is the target country: There are three categories depending on the destination:
2) EU-Zone – including Norway and Switzerland
3) USA, Canada and other international countries
The second factor is the number of bags you want as a total for your pledge. To simplify we have grouped them to 1-2 bags, 3-10 bags, 11-24 bags and 25-50 bags. The shipping cost per bag decreases for you with the number of bags per pledge.
We give you the possibility to group up with other interested parties and share one pledge. In this way shipping cost can be reduced enormously.
If we would have to send one bag to USA, we would have to pay around 90 € for this. If we can combine pledges shipping cost can be reduced to far less. An order of 50 bags would cost us around 500 € to ship to the USA, bringing the price per bag down considerably. If we have more bags we can send all bags in one container and then we can let the shipping be done from a retailer in the USA.
Further, this would simplify customs and taxes, because we will pay the customs cost only once for everyone so you don´t have to bother with that.
We are very, very confident that we can ship the soil to countries in Europe in March/April 2017, for international backers this may not work out due to shipment by boat and import regulations. We will do our best to fulfill as fast as possible but it may turn out that it all takes longer as expected to some countries. We will keep you up to date on the production and shipping progress once the campaign is finished.
If you like our idea or you like our product, or you like us, but you don´t do gardening and you don´t need soil, you can still support us! Just pledge for the 1 € level and add the money for any add on you would like to have.
You can also add things if you are at any other pledge level.
If you are on a pledge level where you will get at least one bag of soil sent to you shipping the add-ons will be free for you. If you are not receiving any soil you have to add 6 € ($ 7) for shipping in Germany, 20 € ($ 22) to any country in the EU and 30 € ($ 33) for shipping to USA or any other international supporters.
If you're interested in purchasing any of these optional buys, please just click the "Manage Your Pledge" button on the Kickstarter page and add the amount total of the items you would like to get. We will sort out what your extra money is going towards after the campaign has closed and we've sent out our Pledge Manager.
Don't have a credit card?
Kickstarter only accepts credit card payment. As many of you know, lots of people in Europe don't own a credit card. These are the alternatives you can use.
Easiest would be to ask your friends and family that DO have a credit card to pledge for you or have them "double pledge" if they have already pledged. By adding what you want to give on top of to their amount.
Another option is to buy a one-time pre-paid credit card.
Pre-paid credit cards always need to have a value of 1€ ($ 1) more than your total pledge amount plus shipping cost!
We tested the product for more than a year and we tested the production thus we are highly confident that we can produce any amount of our soil in a short time.
The biggest problem may occur with international shipping, it is complicated to get to know the conditions of importing soil for every country on the globe. For some countries special treatments are needed before the soil can be imported, other countries block import of soils completely. Therefore, we have limited the countries we ship to. If you are from another country not listed in our pledges, write us and we will check out what it will cost and if it is possible to deliver to you.
We are very, very confident that we can ship the soil in Europe in March 2017, for international backers this may not work out due to shipment by boat and import regulations.
