About

FRESH GROUND PEPPER is a New York City based arts incubator that celebrates new works of art by adventurous artists of all mediums. We believe that the creative spirit is nurtured by delighted exploration and collaborative communities. FGP strives to find new voices and push them each toward surprising frontiers.

FGP is producing its 2nd Biennial Festival of New Work, which will take place in 2020. We will turn our Festival Space into a community homebase, offering low-price, pay-what-you-can ticketing to everything from readings of new plays, to dance and music showcases, to comedy and performance art programming, to events for kids and families. Every day of the festival will have unique daytime and evening programming, and will also host workspace components for artists in need of a space to create.

100% of FGP’s programming is devoted to facilitating the artist’s exploration of their own artistic process, because we believe how art is made is as important as what art is made. FGP invests time in identifying up-and-coming artists and giving them tools to magnify their voices.  FGP also provides resources for examining existing structures and systems within the arts industry, and seeking ways to make them more sustainable, more equitable, and more expansive. The 2020 FGP Festival will kick off FGP's 2nd decade as a new work hub in New York City, and we are committed to making this the most celebratory FGP Festival yet.

The Festival acts as FGP’s homebase - one that artists and audiences can return to in order to experience a wide expanse of different projects and process.

The 2020 Fresh Ground Pepper Festival will showcase projects developed during our 2019-2020 Season, presenting them in dialogue with new works-in-process from members of the FGP community.  We will feature artists working in a vivid array of creative mediums, and celebrate the new, the offbeat, and the uncharted, with daytime and evening programming that will include

  • Readings and presentations from this season's PlayGroup, FGP’s 18-month project development program
  • Performances by our BRB Summer Retreat artists
  • Challenges curated by FGP alums
  • Free workshops in FGP’s brand new program, the Creative Leadership Lab
  • Children's Events (Art Based Play and Storytime for Young Artists)
  • Exhibitions of Visual and Installation Art
  • Common space for community outreach and collaboration
  • Opening and Closing Night Parties
  • and more!

FGP believes in celebrating art in its most nascent stages and trusts in the power of community support as artists create new work. As such, we have structured our 2020 Festival to reflect the holistic and intersectional nature of art-making. Your pledge will provide resources to artists at a key phase of their projects' growth, and enable them to show their work to audiences, peers, and potential collaborators. This visibility results in the creation of a cultural hub that will serve NYC's artistic community-at-large.

The Fresh Ground Pepper Festival is WHERE THE ART IS - and a home to artists and audiences alike.

Ten years ago, in the winter of 2009, Fresh Ground Pepper kicked off as a regular event where artists could share new ideas and celebrate the struggles of art-making within a loving community. In the decade that followed, we have supported and presented the work of over 3,000 artists- many launching successful projects, companies, and careers with FGP’s support.

What began as an art party with a handful of short performances has grown into a joyful incubator - hosting over 120 artists a year in residency programs like our PlayGround PlayGroup and our summer BRB retreat. Fresh Ground Pepper’s ten year history has taken root in many places: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, and even to Bonnaroo's Great Stage Park in Manchester, Tennessee

In 2018 we presented the first ever FGP Festival - a twelve-day extravaganza at the New Ohio Theatre in downtown Manhattan presenting the work of 44 lead artists in theatre, film, dance, music, performance art, comedy, activism, game design, and more. We realized how vital this hub was in bringing FGP's artists together as a community, so we are excited to turn this program into a tradition in 2020. To see more about the 2018 Festival visit www.fgpfestival.com.

Our mission to celebrate adventurous artists and to nurture the creative spirit came to life in a way we never had before. The FGP Festival is impactful because the FGP Festival creates an artistic home. And while our programming is always evolving to fit the needs of bold and hopeful artists, we know it’s important to continue to provide this home-base: a regular hub, a literal location where big ideas are celebrated, nurtured, and supported.

The $30,000 FGP raises during this Kickstarter will represent 32% of the funding FGP has to raise over the course of 2020. The rest of that money will be raised through large private donations, institutional giving, and earned income (ticket sales, etc).

Our 2020 budget of $88,000 includes not only the festival costs, but all of the programs and groups that we facilitate. 53% of this budget goes directly to paying our artists, art administrators, technicians, and other theater magicians working diligently to keep art alive in New York City. The other 47% goes to the necessary resources that support these artists in their making: including space, materials budgets, marketing, food, and much more. Your contribution ensures that we have a festival to program in 2020, and that we can continue supporting our artists and our art facilitators.

FGP’s Creative Directors - Jaclyn Backhaus, Andrew Neisler, Andrew Scoville, Jenny Beth Snyder, and Elinor T Vanderburg- met at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts as underclassman in the Playwrights Horizons Theater School. They, along with co-founder Karina Martins, were inspired by their training to foster a space for artists to develop early stages of their work in a less product-oriented environment found elsewhere in the NYC arts scene.

Jaclyn Backhaus is a Punjabi-American playwright whose plays include Men On Boats, Wives, and India Pale Ale. She comes from Arizona.

Karina Martins is a creative producer with a focus on financial and business management. She comes from Florida by way of Brazil.

Andrew Neisler is a director and producer working in comedy, cabaret, immersive spectacle, and joy-centering, life-affirming theatre. He comes from Georgia.

Andrew Scoville is a theater director specializing in immersive layouts, technological landscapes, and hybrid-genre theater-making. He comes from Chicago.

Jenny Beth Snyder is a director, production manager, co-owner of Tech Without Tears. She comes from Tennessee.

Elinor T Vanderburg is a playwright, book writer, costume designer, and voiceover artist. She comes from Washington, DC.

As a company, we are committed to continuing FGP’s legacy as an artistic incubator by continuing to invest in the artistic conversation around us, find inspiration in the artists who surround us, and craft programming that best serves the artist community at present. We all come from different interests and concentrations, but our common ground and common purpose is maintaining Fresh Ground Pepper as a vital and vibrant artistic home-base.

A word from some of the artists and audience members impacted by the 2018 FGP Festival and FGP as a company:

  • FGP shifted my relationship to viewing art.  I started searching for delight rather than destruction.

            - Eric Farber, 2018 FGP Festival Artist, THE PARADE GROUND

  •  The FGP Festival was essential in the development of my piece El Otro Lado Del Destino. I do not believe I would have been able to write this piece without the support and community of FGP.

            - Wi-Moto Nyoka, 2018 FGP Festival Artist, EL OTRO LADO DEL DESTINO

  • The reason I am a working artist in New York is largely due to FGP, and the amazing people who run it … They are making the edgiest, most interesting, smartest, weirdest work in town and supporting such an amazingly wide array of talented artists… give them all your money!

            - Claire Rothrock, FGP Artist of Distinction, FGPBRB Alum

  • The evening was filled with joyous performance, dancing and drinking and much to my surprise, I left feeling completely reinvigorated about the future of live performance.

            - Jason Eagan, Artistic Director of Ars Nova, FGP Fan

  • I can say without reservation it has been the most important fixture in my creative life in New York.

            - James Monaco, FGP 2015 PlayGround PlayGroup, FGP Artist of Distinction

  • Because of FGP, I have no excuse not to create; they give the deadline that becomes an idea, a scene, a  work sample, a song, a show -- the next step.

            - Nikki Calonge, 2018 FGP Festival In-House Artist, FGP Artist of Distinction

As a Fresh Ground Pepper backer, you will be putting your stamp on the cultural landscape of NYC and putting your commitment behind the artistic voices of tomorrow. You will be joining a community of people who are working on the ground to ensure that the arts remain a vital and ACCESSIBLE part of New York City and the United States. Your backing pledge will cement you as part of this arts community- and in the sprit of reciprocal energy, we will celebrate you at the FGP Festival as someone who made it happen. Our backers will be written on the walls, in the programs, they will be spoken aloud in toasts, fêted on social media, and celebrated throughout the Festival. In today's world, there is something so tangible and affirming about the ability to opt in to creating the world we want to see. Each backer will make a pledge toward creating that world - for art, for artists, and for the celebration of artistic process. Join us, and we will thank you with the art you helped us realize!

Risks and challenges

FGP is no stranger to funding large-scale programming in this current climate. In a world that seems stacked against funding for the arts and for education, we are dedicated to making space to promote those very ideals. With our combined 60 years of experience in the industry, we are ready to fight to center art and decentralize institutional hierarchy.
