What is the RIZE?
The RIZE is a handmade art display that I created to showcase the amazing properties of ferrofluid, a strange black substance that was originally created by NASA as a prototype rocket fuel. It was first made by mixing RP-1 rocket fuel (similar to kerosene) with magnetite particles so that magnetic forces could pull the fuel into the rocket engines in zero gravity.
It's a very unique substance that has only recently been available for use outside of industrial applications. I sought to utilize these unique properties of ferrofluid and bring them to life visually in the RIZE.
The RIZE is activated when you place the sculpture onto its magnetic base.
This magnetizes the giant machined screw in the middle and causes the ferrofluid to spin around and rise up in a beautiful display that will keep you mesmerized.
The RIZE captivates childlike curiosity and amazement when people view it, and it makes for the ultimate distraction on your desk or centerpiece in your office.
Even after interacting with these displays for years they still give me inspiration when I see them in action.
The sculpture itself is also a feast for the eyes, created with a variety of different metals and finishes:
Every square inch of the RIZE is hand crafted and museum worthy.
It's also 100% made in the US, right here in our studio in Opelika, Alabama. We are also shipping anywhere in the US for FREE!
This project has taken years of research to perfect, and now we even have colored ferrofluid available.
4 metallic color-shifting pigments are available:
Each RIZE also includes a powerful handheld N52 neodymium magnet.
The handheld magnet also seperates into 2 smaller magnets for more interaction:
My Background and Inspiration
Hey I'm Matt, and I've been working with ferrofluid full time for the last 3 years. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and have always enjoyed creating art. After surviving a plane crash I decided that life was too short to waste in a cubicle and that I would pursue my dream of inventing cool products full time. I like to blend science with art in my creations and my hope is that they will help inspire the next generation of thinkers and inventors!
Pledge now and help me bring the RIZE to life!
Kickstarter is an amazing place to launch products. You gain valuable feedback from the backer community and can also offer the product at a highly discounted price before launch (because you can cut out retail middlemen and pass those margins on as savings). We had a great experience launching our last project on Kickstarter (the Ferroflow) and look forward to another successful completion!
Another good thing about Kickstarter is that your credit card won't even be charged until the funding period is completed (9/18).
- September/October - finish Kickstarter campaign, order parts
- November/December - receive parts and begin assembly
- January - begin sending out RIZE sculptures
It's going to be close but our goal is to ship out the early backer rewards before Christmas!!! We will be shipping out the finished RIZE sculptures every day as soon as we complete them, so the others won't be far behind.
Thanks for your support!
Risks and challenges
After successfully launching and fulfilling a project last year that also involved ferrofluid we are aware of almost every issue that can arise along the way. We have multiple manufactures in place for each part and have plenty of capacity here at our studio for assembly and quality control. Quality and customer satisfaction is our top priority, and we are confident that we can deliver this product on time and to everyone's satisfaction. We will keep you guys updated each step of the way, and look forward to getting the RIZE delivered to each of you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
