Welcome to a Year In Pattern!
In case you haven't noticed, I am most definitely NOT raising funding for a video project! Although I'm sure there will be more grainy, choppy videos in your future, I would like to offer a view of my work and this project that are a bit more true to the quality you can expect. Although, I'm sure you got a good laugh out of my amateur attempt! Mainly, I hope you got a bit of a feel for who I am and what I'm about.
So here it is, my jumping off point. The leap off the cliff of this big adventure. A year in pattern. 52 weeks of dedication to an obsession. I first got into the big world of art creating artwork for children. Cute animal characters with knobby knees pervaded my every thought. Now, 2.5 years later, I'm still going strong, with a seemingly never ending well of ideas. I often ponder, though, what is my next venture; my next project, my next big thing. And I'm here to tell you that it will be A Year In Pattern.
I suppose it's not a huge reach or surprise that I would become obsessed with surface design given that I have a degree in Industrial Design from Georgia Tech. Industrial Design is the art of product design. From concept through manufacturing and beyond. It can encompass almost anything you can think of. Almost anything that a person can interact with. This includes cars, toys, household goods... you get the idea. And of course, most of those products will have some sort of surface design or pattern as a part of their overall aesthetic. So, although I've always been a more traditional artist, it's not so much of a reach.
What I'm proposing is a Year In Pattern. I want to devote time every week to creating new patterns and surface design, mostly for children's products. My goal is to produce 2 new patterns every week for a full year. This is going to require that I work through creative blocks and scheduling conflicts. I'll have to work around the needs of a full time art business that is already keeping me busy 5 or more days a week. I'll need to find time to do this while also being a wife and a mother to a toddler! But I want to commit to this year. These 52 weeks. The 104 patterns.
I want to create A Year In Pattern.
What I am in need of is time. I need a way to dedicate part of my week, every week, to creating fantastical, whimsical, colorful new pattern designs. In short, I have to hire a part time studio assistant to take some of the more mundane tasks of running a business off my hands. Having an assistant will give me that time.
Your fabulous Kickstarter contributions will help fund my Year in Pattern. Kickstarter backers are rock stars. You really are. You help take a creative person's dream and make it a reality. And, you get to come along for the ride! By the time this thing is underway you are really emotionally invested and have almost as much fun with the project as its creator!
Trust me, I know, I'm a backer too. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I have so far.
*a side note on the rewards... I realize this is a YEAR long project, and some of you may not want to wait that long to receive your rewards. Rest assured, I understand. Smaller rewards like prints and postcards will be sent out in the spring. Larger rewards that involve multiple pattern choices will be delayed until mid year so that you have lots to choose from! Now, if you become a backer and you decide you would like to get your reward earlier than expected, you can certainly email me and we'll see what we can work out. My intention is not to delay, but to offer you as many beautiful choices as possible! :)
