Stretch Goal Time! I am now pushing to get further funding to get comic shop marketing posters and displays. As each backer who now funds, there will be special premiums such as getting one of the posters ($50 level) or a full size cardboard stand-up of The Dying Breed ($150 level).
In addition, for any new backer at the $25 level or any current backer who bumps their pledge up to $25 or more, I am having Kendra R. design a special decal for the premium as well as a special wallpaper for tablets and laptops!
Let's make this stretch goal work! I'd love to get to $3200 in the next 62 hours remaining!
The Dying Breed is to be released first as a six-issue comic book series, bi-monthly and then as the hardcover Graphic Novel once the six-issue run completes. This comic is going to be done old style, just like the heroes and how they live! Each issue is going to be done on newsprint style paper using the four-color bleeds just like the bronze and silver age comics, with glossy cover art. Part of the plan too is to use USA or Canadian based printers.
Money raised in the crowdfund campaign is to be used to pay the artist and for the publication costs. This crowdfund is to serve two main purposes, to generate the needed funding to pay the artist (ALWAYS pay your creatives and artists!) and to generate readership and a following of this series.
Five people living different lives in this modern world; The Aviator, The Alaskan Homesteader, The Grassland Horseman, The Inventor and The Northeastern Mariner. Each lives a difficult but rewarding life in the wilds of North America. All is well until they are diagnosed with terminal illnesses, with one special cure to be found.
To their detriment, they are pursued by The Brothers who run New Day Corporations and its paramilitary shadow division, Darkwave.
The Dying Breed is a modern parable of the influence of lobbyists and corporate corruption in government through its Pharmaceutical companies, its agriculture and farming "Frankencrop" businesses. New Day and the Brothers Orrin and Mitch Vanbeck grow their political influence, wrecking environmental havoc on the Earth and selling poisonous and Genetically Modified Foods to the unsuspecting public.
Their shadow paramilitary division Darkwave has developed a new breed of soldier known as the GMOs, genetically modified soldiers capable of causing great damage. The team of heroes who are fighting the clock to find the cure for their diseases has to fight the Darkwave Agents who also search for the rare Red Algae which may hold the cure to the diseases. The Dying Breed come to face The Dread GMOs during the race to find the Red Algae which The Brothers plan to synthesize, patent and then profit from the drugs, squeezing out anyone not in the 1% who can afford it.
Each hero has his or her special skill set; The Inventor uses technology and knows the ways of Darkwave and New Day. The Aviator is a former NASA astronaut and she is now a pilot who lives a life of adventure and is the captain and leader of The Dying Breed. The Alaskan Homesteader is a former Green Beret and is skilled in wilderness survival. No one knows the seas like Machias St. John, The Northeastern Mariner; and Sonny, The Grassland Horseman, is a modern day cowboy in this urban and confusing world.
Because the comics world has been slow to adapt and develop heroes of diversity I wanted to do my part to change that. The Dying Breed is a varied as can be! Strong female heroes who are not just there for fan-boy drooling and fantasy are part of The Dying Breed, with Fennec Sands aka The Aviator being the Captain of the team, and Joan Cypher aka The Inventor being an African American woman, spurred to study the sciences and earn three PhDs! Joan is the 'MacGuyver' of The Dying Breed. Comics and story should be for everyone and The Dying Breed is accomplishing just that.
Over the course of development you will receive updates and a link to The Dying Breed website. Here you can read updates to the comic's scripts, see panel breakdowns and layouts and get to experience the entire creative process. The Dying Breed website is being developed and will be up and live by the end of March 2014. Here you can keep up with the stories, development and even be treated to a few pictures and videos of the art and team.
Regular emails with tales of the heroes and 'tales of the completion' are to be sent out to all backers as the comics go from the initial pages to the final inked, colored and lettered comics. The Graphic Novel gets released after the full 6 issues run of the initial mini-series, giving backers and readers a chance to have a hardcover copy of the entire story in one comprehensive book. With effort and fan backing, the hope is to grow a fan base and readership that sustains the printing and production of further issues of The Dying Breed.
Risks and challenges
I am the creator and writer of The Dying Breed. The scripting for this story and Graphic Novel/Comic Book series is complete and ready for the artists to take the reigns! The heavy lifting is already done!
There is always a risk of delays in the production, art creation, editing and publishing, but those are the only risks with The Dying Breed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
