This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, August 23 2019 2:46 PM UTC +00:00.
What is Simple Sandwich?
In Simple Sandwich up to 4 players take control of a animated slice of bread and use their sandwich toothpick to jump on ingredients (like a slice of lettuce, tomato, burger, etc) that wander around the counter! Players can collect these ingredients to build up their sandwich, earning points to win the round. Players compete to not only get a lot of ingredients, but to build wacky and huge sandwiches!
How do I make Sandwiches?
Sandwich making is the core of Simple Sandwich. Earlier, we mentioned how you can acquire ingredients for your sandwich by jumping on them. There are also pieces of bread roaming the counter that players need to jump on in order to complete their sandwiches! Once your sandwich is completed, you'll see a prompt telling you to fill your order by taking your sandwich to the plate located on one of the sides of the counter. When you get on the plate, your sandwich burns down and gives you points. Just like that, you're ready to make your next sandwich!
AI controlled Monster sandwiches can be created through special recipes that are considered unwanted or gross (think of something like a mayo and jam sandwich!).These monster sandwiches attack enemy players stealing their most recently acquired ingredients. They can be used as a distraction to occupy other players or as a measure of self defense. Watch out for those nasty sandwiches roaming the kitchen!
Game modes in Simple Sandwich offer different goals for each game;
Free-For-All is the default game mode in which every player competes against one another to gain the most points and create the most insane sandwiches in short rounds.
Toast-Time players must first cook the ingredients that they wish to turn-in by staying on sizzling pans on a hot stove until their current ingredient is cooked. Make sure not to burn and ruin your sandwich!
Order-Up allows players to complete food orders in a restaurant as fast as possible, only the first player to complete an order gets rewarded! The player that completes the most recipes in the time allotted wins!
Team-Fight pins two teams of 2 against each other, sharing points, and competing to create the best sandwiches!
We hope to incorporate and create a ton of engaging game modes for Simple Sandwich, but only with your support!
Simple Sandwich is built for accessibility in controls and functionality, we plan on the game being available on both Steam and on the Nintendo Switch E-shop. The easy-to-learn control scheme allows players of all ages to join in on the fun!
*Disclaimer - We are currently awaiting approval for Simple Sandwich to be sold on the Nintendo Switch E-shop. Until we receive any further updates on our approval, all game keys rewarded will be for the Steam platform. If we are approved, you will be notified in Updates and information about choosing key type and quantity will be sent to backers. We are as excited as you are to get our hands on a Switch copy of Simple Sandwich and will keep you informed on all progress in this regards! Box art is a concept and may not reflect the game being available on the Nintendo Switch unless notified.
How did Simple Sandwich Come to be?
Simple Sandwich is an ingredient collecting, competitive sandwich making game that the Fellow Humans Development Team has been working on since February. As Students attending Champlain College for Game Development, our starting team of 5 members had 3 weeks to create 3 different game prototypes. We would then choose from the 3 to pursue development for the rest of the semester! While our first two passes had potential, we wanted to try and create something that was easy to play, fun to work on and above all - fun.
It wasn't until the third and final prototype was conceptualized during a fateful encounter with an incompetent delicatessen. We called a brainstorming meeting to try and nail down our next idea - and that's when it happened! Our lead designer ended up running late to this meeting due to an error in his food order.
Outraged, he stormed into the meeting room and explained his tardiness with the loud proclamation that all he wanted was 'A simple f**king sandwich!'. The team broke down into laughter and we began building the concept for this next game prototype around this event - and ended up pursuing it as our final project!
Sure you could make a sandwich alone, but what about with your friends?! Our easy-drop in controller support allows for up to four players facing off at once!
Check out some amazing PAX East 2019 attendees playing in a tournament! A huge thank you to everyone who play tested Simple Sandwich at our shared booth! Your feedback helped improve the game and guided further!
In Simple Sandwich combining certain ingredients together unlocks recipes! Recipes offer extra point boosts upon completion and in some game modes are required to be made. Players can open their recipe book to view their current unlocked recipes and their point values.
Recipes are an important part of Simple Sandwich, with specific ingredient combinations netting players more points than just collecting as many ingredients as they can. Monster sandwiches are a recipe that can be made using unwanted combinations - think of something like a mayo and jam sandwich.
Custom recipes are available to be made by you! These include a custom name and set of ingredients that are needed to complete said recipe, tiers that include this reward are the Royale with Cheese ($35) and up! Many rewards include creating multiple custom recipes for anyone to enjoy!
Other than the main theme which remains the same, the gameplay portion of Simple Sandwich makes use of the Interactive Music Hierarchy in AudioKinetic Wwise. The track was recorded as one long song but exported in 4 bar segments by instrument.
Each instrument has from 4 to 6 different segments. Every time the track loops after playing the introduction segment, the music hierarchy will randomly select a different segment for each instrument and randomly select between the Main section and Variation section.
Essentially, a unique piece of music is played every time the track loops, creating a seemingly limitless amount of possibilities and a unique musical experience every match of Simple Sandwich!
Listen to the main theme:
Check out an example of the randomized gameplay music:
The music you hear in this video was not controlled in any way and was generated randomly using the process stated above.
NOTE: What you hear is still a rough mix from the prototype stage of development. Audio quality is subject to change
Take a look at our delicious menu of extravagant Sandwiches perfect for any and all types of people and moods!
- Custom Recipe(s): Design the contents and title of your very own recipe to be placed into the game! Just like every other in-game reward, this is a world-wide recipe that every player can create in Simple Sandwich!
- Custom in-game Fridge Magnet: Design an in-game magnet that will be displayed somewhere in game!

Additional merchandise is available for higher reward tiers! We hope that this will kickstart (pun intended) our tiny studio's ability to create wacky and fun experiences. Typically the cost for the creation and upkeep of a game is high (and it may be hard to believe), but we actually can finish this game with $10,000 - as the core systems are already in place for the creation of more levels, ingredients, recipes, and general content! However, this budget is needed to pay for program fees and licensing... to get this sandwich made we need your help!
Most of the funding for this project is fulfilling program licensing fees and paying for the team to be working on the project full time. The rest will be used for merchandise fees, Nintendo Switch licensing and developer kits, and future marketing for new team members and audiences! We need your help to add all the content we want to, filling up this sandwich to the brim!
The current date for finalizing this project is May 2020. This delivery date gives the team time to refine and polish the game - and so we can have a buffer for any unforeseen challenges we may face! We want to make sure that you get the best possible game we have to offer!
Risks and challenges
As with any Kickstarted or Crowd Funded project, there will be a series of risks and challenges that the team has to mitigate and manage. With game development there are always risks that the development team may face during their time on a project.
Over-scoping and under-delivery are large risks that development teams face. While we may totally want drop in multiplayer with 32 player lobbies and voice chat - our limited staff, project timeline and technical abilities would make most of those difficult to achieve. We also want to make sure that we are delivering what we have promised to you as backers. Making sure we are keeping our word and maintaining transparency with the community is something that we all take very seriously.
Outside of that - there are also several challenges that we face as a team.
We are currently spread out around the East Coast of the United States - working part time on Simple Sandwich and holding other jobs as well. Although we are confident in our abilities to deliver this project on time and to the standards that we expect of ourselves - we have given ourselves a buffer so that we may be able to produce the best possible product we can. We want to deliver to you a game that not only meets our expectations, but yours as well.
