Survey: Finally, as a reminder, we'll be sending out a survey around July to collect address information. Also, you will have the chance to add on other Fellow products at a discount and/or upgrade from an EKG to an EKG+.
In case anyone missed this info as part of an earlier update ..
For anyone interested in my review of the Stagg XL dripper (which is bundled with some of the reward levels in this campaign), here you go! I pledged for the bundle with the XL and didn’t expect to be able to check it out until our pledges are delivered but I got an unexpected surprise when I was recently gifted one. The unit it very well made with a great finish and feels good in the hand; the dosing funnel, dosing marks, and cup stand are very nice touches. I compared Stagg XL with my daily driver Melitta 2-hole cone (I’ve got others but for a daily driver the Melitta is less “fussy” than the others becuase those require a precise pour); for both Melitta and XL I used identical coffee (20 gr), bloom volume/time (40 gr, 30 sec), and brew volume (10 oz); brew times varied as you would expect since I used the “fill up” method instead of a timed pour - XL brewed in about 4 min whereas Melitta took longer because the brew stalled toward the end. Tasting: To be honest, I didn’t expect to be able to taste much of a difference but I was surprised. Although the basic flavor elements were present in both cups the flavor profile of the XL “popped” compared to the Melitta (which tasted flat in comparison). There were a few coffee grounds in the bottom of the Melitta cup but no grinds in the bottom of the XL cup. Although you wouldn’t think the Melitta filter would let grounds through apparently they escaped through the “welded” seams on the side (this can’t happen with the XL filters since there is no seam). Why a difference in taste? My guess is a lot of it has to do with geometry, extraction time, and temperature regulation: 1) the XL is tall and narrow (essentially a columnar brewer instead of a cone brewer), 2) the XL has more holes in the bottom and they were apparently designed to get the timing approximately right; as a result the brew came through uniformly without stalling towards the end, and 3) the XL is insulated (double walled) which would better maintain the temperature during the brew process. Bottom line: 1) I’m very impressed, and 2) I’ve got a new daily driver.
I would like to add an additional EKG to my order- according to the update this week you indicated this would need to be done through pre-orders on your website. However, it is indicating 'out of stock' and not accepting any orders. Will that be opened up for orders?
Craig is correct. The copper is a coating and the base material is still stainless steel. This gives us the durability of steel with the color of copper. And, as Craig pointed out, there is a plastic cap on the bottom of the kettle that would remain matte black. (NOTE: This is a cap on the outside of the metal bottom and water does not touch the metal)
The existing Copper Stagg appears to be a coated plating over stainless steel - it isn't actually a Copper colour - more of a Copper/Silver shade. I wouldn't dare touch my Copper Stagg with a Copper or Brass polish. For the EKG, the bottom exterior of the mock-up shown at the bottom of the Campaign page (also that same Copper/Silver colour) is still black plastic so I'm not sure that I would go for the Copper EKG in any case - the mock-up just looks weird to me.
I'm a bit confused about the smart switch question as well. Also, it says the the timer must be started by the button, but the video you made shows it starting as soon as the kettle is lifted. Am I not understanding the phrasing in the survey or is this actual conflicting information?
In regard to the copper version, is it going to be a solid copper, or just a plating? If it's plated, how durable will that be? I'm curios as to wether or not it would be able to be polished, as most copper and/or brass polishes that I've used have stripped the plating right off of the base metal.
Is there no way to make it a button you just tap and you could slide your finger to make the time go up or down or use another device i.e. your phone? Seems like that should be fairly easy to do and a lot cleaner look.
TIMER OPTION
I like the 3,2,1 option but the other gives more control as to when I want to start. Would the 3,2,1 option start over if the kettle was put back on the base, or would it need to reheat to the correct temperature first?
SMART SWITCH
Not sure if I entirely understand the "smart switch" question. If it is to decide what time to start heating up then yes that would be amazing. Then the amount of time it takes to heat is not as big of a deal, if it can already be heated by the time I wake up.
OPTIMAL HEAT TEMP
How will it be indicated that the temperature has been reached to the degree desired? Will there be a beep, a light, a cup of coffee logo on the dial?
All, Look for a survey next week at the latest to get your thoughts on certain features (i.e., base height, etc.). Also, our manufacturing partners are flying to the USA this week, so we should more updates and a progress report to share by end of week. We're cranking. Don't want to have to deliver that watermelon slicer!
@creator, thanks for the update. It's disappointing to hear that the slow rise button cannot be done. Could you speak on the previous question I had regarding temperature control?
Are you using a PID controller for temperature control? That would be a precise way to keep the temperature with minimal variance.
Hey All! We're just getting back from a big trip to Asia where we met with Acaia's engineers and multiple suppliers. Working on an update now and should have something by end of day tomorrow. Excited to share all of the progress we've made in such a short period of time.
@creator I don't mean to be a squeaky wheel but it has been nearly a month without any updates or responses to requests in the comments section. I believe you owe your backers an explanation.. and a timely response. Thank you
Hi there! If we backed this project but would like a copper EKG (assuming you're able to raise enough funds for one), can we swap our black EKG for the copper?
Hi guys. I'm not sure what happened but I didn't mean to back your project. I remember looking at your campaign and I'm sure it's an amazing product but I don't drink coffee or tea and stay away from hot beverages of any kind. I'd like to see about getting my pledge refunded. Can you help with that or know whom I can contact? Thank you
Congratulations! I love your design & look forward to seeing the kettle here in Maine when it's ready to ship. FYI, I am another backer who would be willing to pay more (and even to wait a bit longer) to get the Copper version!!!!!
@Creator.......U mentioned in updates that the Upgrade to Copper Color wasn't a ploy to make more money or make money off the Copper Color. So sense that's out there is it possible to send out a Survey asking how many backers would actually want Copper over black than sort out from there if it's possible and how much more we the Backers would neeed to chip in for it? My thoughts are that if you offered both colors on your Website the Copper would fly off the shelves. So just from a Marketing/Branding position I'd think you'd want to make that happen? Any comments or insight on this topic? Thanks
Just to correct @Ro Olufunwa, the EKG/EKG+ does ship to Canada.
Any Canadians that backed this, please do realize that we use the same voltages as the United States. Not sure why the alternative fact no shipping to Canada started circulating here.
@creator - I would have loved to see an extra option to add on the dripper/carafe set to the EKG+ Acaia package... any chance of making that available to backers to obtain it at a lower cost than current pricing online?? I kind of want it all ;)
International backer here - I will be RELEASING my EARLY BIRD bird pledge for anyone that scans the comment section to snap up at 3pm GMT. - only just checked in and realized there is no shipping for non US or Canadian backers.
Good luck to you @Creator with the final push. Well done for staying true to your purpose to deliver the product on time to US and Canadian backers. I will be sure to sign up to your email newsletter and look forward to International roll out in Winter 17/Spring 18

A survey would be a great way to see who
A. Would pay for the copper upgrade
And
B. Get an idea of what they would pay for that upgrade.
Also, I think it'd be a great idea to offer just the kettle to backers. Then we all could use one while another is on to boil.
