About this project
We’re Fellow, a highly-caffeinated crew obsessed with brewing top-notch coffee. We already brought you a super cool stovetop kettle, and now, we’re giving it a pulse. Say hello to Stagg EKG, an electric pour-over kettle that pours as good as it looks. Yours for the pursuit of liquid concoction excellence.
Variable Temperature Control
By turning the knob, you select your desired temperature ranging from 135°F to 212°F, and Stagg EKG does the rest. No more guessing degrees. Unless you’re guessing Jake’s favorite member of 98 Degrees, which is obviously Drew.
See the temp. Be the temp. A discreet, black LCD screen indicates the desired “Set Temperature” and the “Real Time Temperature” with an illuminating element to show the heating progress.
When the toggle on the back is switched to HOLD mode, the Stagg EKG will maintain your desired temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius for 30 minutes. You know, for when you overestimate your ability to run two miles. When the toggle is not in HOLD mode, the kettle will go to sleep after reaching the set temperature.
Keeps Track of Recipes
Brewbar Tablet App keeps track of your recipes. So you know exactly how to make that bomb 20 gram, 330 mL, 201°F pour-over coffee from last week.
Fellow | Acaia | Baratza Connectivity
Talks to the Acaia scale and the Baratza grinder for a connected café. Stagg EKG+, all Acaia scales, and the Baratza Sette 270W will be able to work in tandem to produce a cafe's recipes with ease and precision at the touch of a button.
Brewbar’s Top Café Features:
- Connection for up to four scales and three brew stations
- Ability to calculate two ratios and two flow rates at each station
- Creation of a master recipe with automatic recording of subsequent brews
Which one will you choose? If you want a fantastic electric kettle that is as equally functional as it is beautiful, go with the Stagg EKG. If you fancy yourself a home barista, a smart gadget lover, or a café owner, the Bluetooth technology and connectivity with other top coffee products makes Stagg EKG+ a great choice. To be honest, you can’t go wrong either, but here’s a more detailed breakdown:
Brewing coffee is like baking a cake. Sure, you can bake all your batters at 350°F, but you’re going to get quite a few burnt bottoms and gooey middles. And sure, you can brew your coffee at “about” boiling, but you’re cutting yourself short in producing the best tasting cup of coffee. The bean, roast, grind size, and brew method all factor into the temperature. Heck, even the age of your bag matters. Did you know that freshly roasted coffee should be brewed at a higher temp than an older bag of beans? With Stagg EKG, you have complete control of temperature with a touch of a button.
Can’t we all just get oolong? Well, yes! The Stagg EKG isn’t just for coffee lovers. Since different types of tea require different temperatures, the variable temperature control makes steeping the perfect cup of tea easy. Dial in your degrees and say goodbye to bitterness. Oh, and the HOLD mode keeps your water toasty for 30 minutes. No tea cozy required.
What's Stagg Pour-Over System You Ask?
The Stagg Pour-Over System comes with everything you need to brew, serve, and enjoy ridiculous good coffee at home: Stagg Dripper, Stagg Carafe, and two Stagg Tasting Glasses.
And The Acaia Pearl Scale?
Master the art of coffee brewing with Acaia—the only scale designed for coffee enthusiasts that monitors the weight, time, and flow-rates as you brew coffee. This simple, modern, and minimalistic scale is designed with brilliant functionality in mind, compatible with the Acaia Phone and Android app, and offers you the endless possibility to explore the exquisite world of coffee.
When stovetop Stagg first launched 14 months ago, we were overwhelmed by the demand. Not only were you guys ordering them like hotcakes, but even our favorite baristas started to get in on the action. To have our kettle used in national and international competitions, as well as earn design award recognition and a placement in the New York MoMA Design Store, was beyond our wildest expectations for Stagg’s first year.
Fellow began as a Kickstarter campaign in 2013. We sought out to create a different type of coffee brewer, one that was equally functional and beautiful.
After eight months and countless prototypes, Duo Coffee Steeper - a dual chamber “twist” on a traditional French press - was born. With over 2,700 backers and almost $200,000 in pre-orders, the Duo Coffee Steeper has kept the coffee Kickstarter trend strong.
Post Kickstarter, we’ve grown into a small company. We’re now a San Francisco-based startup in love with coffee and obsessed with product design. We’re here because you should never have to choose between aesthetics and functionality.
We’re always curious about why products are the way they are and how we can make them better. Making is in our DNA. Even our marketing whiz, engineer, and sales guy are tinkerers.
Whether you’re a coffee aficionado or a beginner, you should have fun with the craft of brewing. We want Fellow to be your partner in the pursuit of a ridiculously good cup of coffee.
About Fellow's Founder
Jake Miller founded Fellow while pursuing his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and has been at the helm full-time since graduating in 2013. Fellow's first product, Duo Coffee Steeper, was a class project in the d.School's popular class, Launchpad. Prior to Fellow, Jake worked as a Brand Manager for Caribou Coffee's beverage and whole bean business. Recently named a "Top 75 People" changing the beverage industry by Imbibe magazine, Jake hopes to make specialty coffee more approachable and help people brew ridiculously good coffee at home through beautifully functional design.
We're not going stag. We had great partners in the design process. Branch is design and branding agency founded by Josh Morenstein and Nick Cronan in 2013. Branch designs, develops, and manufactures a range of products for a wide spectrum of companies, from furniture to housewares as well as cutting edge technology products for some of the most innovative companies in the world. Current clients and partners include: Google, Council, L’Oreal, Nextbit, Woollypocket, Pax labs, Thync, and Athos.
Acaia is focused on transforming the coffee brewing experience by creating new accessories, technologies, and software for the specialty coffee industry. The Pearl and Lunar coffee scales are smart coffee scales that connects to Acaia apps via Bluetooth technology. The Acaia Coffee, Brewmaster, and Brewbar apps organize essential coffee brewing data, calculates brew ratios, and live-graphs your pours.
Acaia is very excited to partner with Fellow on their new Stagg EKG+. This collaboration is part of our higher focus of improving specialty coffee tools through design and technology. Fellow closely matches our own aesthetic of minimal, functional design. Brewing a cup of coffee can oftentimes feel like science. With its connected equipment, Brewbar allows you to record all the data, without taking your eyes off the pour. This is unprecedented technology that can not only help cafés train their staff, but also amp up the home barista’s own coffee lab.
We love pour-over coffee, but we didn't love the electric pour-over kettles currently on the market. Fellow and Branch spent months crafting and perfecting a minimalist electric pour-over kettle you’ll be proud to display on your counter. No more hiding your blender-esque kettle in the cupboard when guests come over. But, it took months and months and prototype after prototype to get to this point. Let’s just say it was a labor of love.
We’ve already met with our manufacturing partners and feel comfortable with the timeline below. Here’s how we’ll be giving Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG+ a pulse.
Thank you so much for helping us bring Stagg EKG and EKG+ to life! You have no idea how much we value your cheers, support, and feedback. If we could, we’d give you all a desk and nameplate in our office, but alas, space is tight and our founder Jake has moved his desk to a hammock above the conference table to save room. No joke.
To help us continue to spread the word on Stagg EKG, hit one of the buttons below to share. We can’t do this without you!
First off, a huge thank you to Julian Bagirov and Jared Aller who worked on the original stovetop Stagg design. Tony Chen and our Songson family, Jerry and Cyndi Mix, Russ Hafferkamp, Jon Denis, Michael Dearing, Raj Kanodia, The Trebles, Lance Tate, Matt Bulloch, Zach Jones, Raaid Ahmad, Dan Stanko, and Nathan Koppikar. Risks and challenges
Although this challenge excites us, we realize we are going to run into obstacles along the way. However, unlike most Kickstarter projects, we've been working on Stagg EKG for 10 months prior to this campaign launch. Our team has visited with our manufacturers on multiple occasions already. Also, the manufacturer we selected specializes in electric kettles, and we are confident in their ability.
We are confident we will be able to deliver on our promise. We also promise to be fully transparent and provide our supporters with regular updates as we move from concept to production to fulfillment. We will keep you informed of any and all trade-offs we would need to make along the way to deliver this product to your front door. Thank you so much for your support, and we're excited you're along for the journey!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Hey, why do you only have one type of electrical plug? I live in [INSERT YOUR COUNTRY] and want one, too!
Believe us, our dream is to have every plug available for Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG+. But right now, we can only afford the electrical certification for the Type-B plug in the United States and Canada. Eventually, we want Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG+ to be compatible and certified in every country.
Does Canada count as worldwide? Check out the question right above this one to make sure Stagg EKG will plug into your wall. We'll only be shipping to Canada and within the United States.
When shipping to Canada, the receiver pays the import fee.
Shipping costs increase because the weight goes up.
Thanks for your support! We will ask you for your address after the campaign ends via email. Till then, don’t worry about it!
The connected system (Stagg EKG+, Acaia Scale, and Baratza Sette 270W Grinder) is ideal for café settings where tablets are often the tech of choice. But Acaia (the folks behind the app), are currently developing a smartphone version that will be compatible with Stagg EKG+, but we can’t guarantee it will be ready by the time we ship Stagg EKG+ to Kickstarter backers.
Nope. Unless you want to buy two and use the other one for making Ramen, but we won’t replace it when it gets jammed with noodles.
Sorry folks, although we're linked up with Acaia to connect to their Brewbar app, this kettle does not have a physical scale in the base.
Why does Jake look 9 years older in this video than in his Duo Kickstarter video if they were only shot 3 years apart?
“Running a start-up is stressful.” - Jake
