HAVE YOU SEEN THESE KIDS?
The Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand Volume 2 funded on day 1 in less than five hours and went on to unlock several exciting collectibles!
Wondering about all the Stretch Goals we unlocked and all the collectible items offered to backers?
Check out our UNLOCKED Stretch Goals below:
The Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand Volume 1 went on to unlock seven Stretch Goals thanks to over 750 backers during its' 30-day Kickstarter.
Welcome to the Kickstarter to fund the 2nd & FINAL Volume:
Hello everyone, my name is Felipe Cagno and the Lost Kids has been a passion project for almost fifteen years.
It started back in 2005 when I was still an undergrad in Brazil and it lived with me as I went through film school and eventually wrote a film script that served as the basis for a graphic novel now published in two parts.
While this might be the Kickstarter to fund the second half of the story you'll also find Volume 1 - complete with gold foil & poster dust-jacket - among many of our tiers so if you are a new backer and reader, make yourself right at home!
WHAT IS THE LOST KIDS?
The Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand is a love letter to Goonies, the 80s cartoon Dungeons & Dragons and my all-time favorite game series Final Fantasy!
When a group of five teenagers is mysteriously transported to a world filled with magic and airships their only clue to return home is to find a mythical lost city - the city of Samarkand.
Volume 1 took the Kids and their traveling companions - a Thief, a Knight and a young Mage Apprentice - as far as Mitani, City of Mages as they look for the Rogue Princess Evelet. The second volume picks the story right up throwing readers right into one of the most exciting chase sequences you'll ever experience in comics!
WHY SPLIT UP THE STORY IN TWO PARTS?
Because the graphic novel was adapted from an award-winning film screenplay I wrote while at film school the end result was a whopping 230+ pages long graphic novel which made it impossible to be published in print right away.
It made sense to split this intimidating project in two parts and deliver them right with the premium format it always deserved.
I was glad to unlock a few exciting upgrades to the production of Volume 1 - i.e.: gold foil, hardcover variant cover, extra pages - and I really hope we can do it again this time as well, the Lost Kids deserve to end with a bang!
AND THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT EDITIONS OF THE SAME BOOK?
Yes, there are.
Volume 2 collects issues 5 thru 8 in a softcover TPB with our regular cover art or in a hardcover premium format with a Variant Cover and Kickstarter Exclusive Edition stamp.
The hardcover edition though will not be available outside Kickstarter. It is exclusive to Kickstarter backers and will be done as PRINT ON DEMAND meaning I will only print as many books as sold on this campaign.
You'll note I'm not offering Volume 1 in its hardcover format to most of our tiers - the only units available are the leftovers from printing extra books to cover emergencies like damaged or lost items from our first Kickstarter.
The same will happen with Volume 2.
If we go well above our initial goal there will also be exclusive Stretch Goals to the hardcover Kickstarter edition.
And yes, the variant cover is a especially commissioned brand new double-splash artwork by artists Rafael De Latorre & Clonerh!
THE COVERS ARE OBVIOUSLY GORGEOUS BUT WHAT ABOUT THE INTERIOR ART?
We truly had a talented team from all over the world work on the Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand, meet the team behind every issue:
Art by Ben & Joey Vazquez (USA) and colors by Everardo Orozco (Mexico)
Art by Rafael De Latorre (Brazil) and colors by Clonerh Kimura (Mexico)
Art by Wilton Santos (Brazil) and colors by Everardo Orozco (Mexico)
Art by René Córdova (Mexico) & Luis Figueiredo (Portugal) and colors by Michael Perez (USA) & Derek Down (Scotland)
Art by Noel Rodriguez (Philippines) & Luis Figueiredo (Portugal) and colors by Clonerh Kimura (Mexico)
Art by Ivan Anaya (El Salvador), Luis Figueiredo (Portugal) and colors by Clonerh Kimura (Mexico)
Issues #7 and #8
Art by César Gaspar (Mexico) and colors by Eddy Swan (Australia)
The book will also include the original covers by Stanley Artgerm Lau (Singapore), Carlos Gomez (Spain) & Derek Dow (Scotland), Todd Nauck (USA) & Clonerh Kimura (Mexico) and Gina Chacón (Mexico).
And if we manage to unlock Extra Pages it will also include a Gallery of Guest Artists and Variant Covers by artists like Saharaam, Otis Frampton, Filip Acovic and Andrea Cofrancesco.
THAT'S GREAT! CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE FULL PAGES?
Absolutely! It's worthy to mention that all eight issues are 100% complete and will go to print as soon as we wrap up the Kickstarter.
I'm re-doing all the lettering from scratch with professional letterer Deyvison Manes and also tweaking the dialogue for a last pass so new readers can enjoy the best version of The Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand possible.
Issues #7 & 8:
AND WHAT KIND OF REWARDS ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE?
Our main dish is obviously The Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand Volume 2 in either edition - or both of them - but we also have some pretty cool stuff too.
As mentioned before I'm offering Volume 1 as well to new readers so they can walk out of this Kickstarter with the full story.
There are also bookmarks, post-cards, prints and more! We are also offering a hardcover art book that is the perfect companion to the graphic novels:
The Art of the Lost Kids
This was the first ever-published Lost Kids book. It was an art book published back in 2010 through DeviantArt collecting a number of pin-ups, concepts and character studies.
It's been long out of print and I'm making the very last copies available exclusively on this Kickstarter! They are already included in some of our tiers but you can always add it to any tier by over pledging $20 plus shipping ($3 US domestic or $7 international)
- Hardcover Premium format
- Glossy art stock paper
- 80 full colored pages
- Large format - 10.5in x 8.25in
- Concepts by top artists like Tony Holmsten, Nei Ruffino, Ben & Joey Vazquez and more!
It is filled with background info on characters, how they were created, the world, mythos, lore and more. The Art of the Lost Kids is a perfect entry point to the series as much as it is a companion Making Of book!
Set of Prints x3 or x8 - Series 2
*Series 1 prints will be available in our online store once we complete this Kickstarter.
The Lost Kids was lucky to snag pin-ups by some of the world's most talented and popular artists back during it's DeviantArt days and while I do plan on including these artworks in the book, I thought it'd be cool to also make them available as prints!
Backers can choose whether to go home with a set of 3x prints or go all the way with a set of 8x! There won't be any substitution so please make sure you are getting the ones that caught your eye.
They come in a large 11x17in size glossy high-end paper and we ship them in a separate thick cardboard Mailer Tube.
*International backers please note this means twice as much shipping as the tubes are considered packages as well.
Set of 3x Prints
Set of 8x Prints
THE SECRET SAMARKAND TOME
Extremely limited to 15 books only, this VIP textured hardcover edition will feature its' own exclusive ALL BLACK ART, SILVER FOIL and GLOW-IN-THE-DARK INK ON THE FAYTH!
They will come numbered from 1 to 15 and I won't make these available anywhere else.
We also had a Volume 1 Secret Tome and it worked like a charm, the book turned out extremely beautiful as you can check out below from a photo with the Kickstarter edition too:
WHAT ABOUT STRETCH GOALS? ANYTHING SPECIAL PLANNED?
If and when we go over our initial $8,000 goal then we do start going after Stretch Goals where everybody wins!
For every stretch goal unlocked backers get special rewards, upgrades and more. If you back now and spread the word... we just might be able to squeeze more into your package!
Here's our unlocked Stretch Goals on the Kickstarter for the first Volume! Can we do better this time?
I do have a lot planned for this Kickstarter as well not only repeating some of the favorites from the last campaign but also finally going after that "Princess Evelet" minted metal coin!
Some of the past unlocked Stretch Goals included post-cards, fridge magnets, extra pages featuring Making Of and Gallery of Art and my personal favorite:
A COLLECTIBLE CARDBOARD SNES GAME CARTRIDGE BOX!
This was sent as a mount-it-yourself box to display at home and featured original artwork mimicking 90s SNES design and three pixel art screens designed exclusively for the box!
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF FOR US THAT NEVER HEARD OF FELIPE CAGNO
I'm 34 years old (about to turn 35 on April 1st!) and I have been working pretty much exclusively with comics since 2013. I have a background in film making, got my Master's degree at Chapman University and wrote and directed my first feature-length film in 2012, A Bullet With No Name.
My first comic book series was The Lost Kids: Seeking Samarkand epic adventure (see how we are coming back full circle?!). It was an adaptation of a feature screenplay I wrote while at Chapman and working at producing companies like Arad Pictures, Weed Road and Misher Films.
Trying a different approach to comics, I came up with the short narrative challenge "321": comic book stories with 3 pages, 2 characters and 1 twist ending. The 321: Fast Comicsseries was kickstarted right here in 2015, and featured stories from every genre you can think of with a myriad of top-name artists attached to them.
My biggest title right now is The Few and Cursed featuring the Redhead. Along with Fabiano Neves we've published five books so far and we've got a board game in the works with Rock Manor Games.
I also have another creator-owned series in the works, Classified, a spy thriller. Earlier this year I completed two original graphic novels. Too Good to Be True is a dramedy about a wannabe comic book artist that meets his inspirational Hollywood crush.
Choices: A Hero's Tale is a graphic novel about a young guy that wants to be the world's first real superhero. It's inspired by the comics from the 50s and 60s when superheroes were just fun.
Recently I also got the opportunity of writing a Planet of the Apes short story for comic book app Madefire and Fox. Last but not least published the sci-fi drama Adagio in Brazilwhich was the recipient's of a prestigious grant in 2017.
DEYVISON MANES - Letterer
One of the best letterers in Brazil, Deyvison has built an impressive body of work over the past couple of years and is slowly tackling more and more titles for the US comic market.
He's been with The Few and Cursed since the beginning and has also done every other book I've ever published. He is also a crafty writer and has his own creator-owned sci-fi book - Justiça Sideral.
WOULD YOU MIND GOING OVER YOUR BUDGET & SHIPPING?
I'm always all about 100% transparency and I believe you deserve to know where your money is going to.
All of the money raised by Kickstarter will be used towards four things: Production, Printing, Shipping and Fees.
Here’s a breakdown of our costs based on Volume 1 hitting $28K and 760 backers:
- Production - $1,212.00
- Printing & Delivery - $6,823.00
- Shipping - $5,818.75
- Shipping supplies - $515.66
- Fees (approx. 9% Kickstarter) - $2,407.53
- Other costs including travel, ISBN code, etc - $962.34
Total - $17,739.28
Any additional funding over our goal will first cover whatever is left from the above and all other extras not included in this estimate. Going even further that's when myself and other collaborators that worked on spec get paid.
As far as packaging goes we use hard cardboard photo mailers plus dust-free clear plastic bags and comic book sized card-boards. For those high tiers packages with tons of content we use Easy-Fold Mailers for maximum protection (this worked great for my last Kickstarter!).
*Please note EVERY hardcover book is shipped out on Easy-Fold Mailers so the added cost is also an upgrade on shipping.
Last but not least, as mentioned previously, we use thick cardboard mailer tubes for the prints - which does incur higher shipping since it's basically two packages being mailed but it's the only way to make sure the prints arrive safely.
Our primary goal is to entertain you and release the Lost Kids in print and in its entirety for the first time ever. It all starts with YOU and YOUR support so thanks so much for checking the Lost Kids out.
If you have any questions or inquiries please send me a message or shoot an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
Risks and challenges
This will be my 11th Kickstarter campaign, 22nd crowdfunding if you count my experience with a similar platform in Brazil, and by now I can say I have a pretty good handle of what to expect prior, during and after a lengthy campaign.
I love crowdfunding, it's an excellent opportunity to get in direct touch with readers and fans. If you have any criticism, feedback or questions, I'm always around whether it's through Kickstarter's inbox system or at email@example.com
I'd like to point out the book is pretty much done, all that is left is to ready the print files and actually go to print. You'd think that would not have any problems but as Volume 1 showed it's never a fireproof logistics.
The carrier that would transport the books from California to Florida misplaced the entire crate for about two weeks, we had to switch printers halfway through production, we had problems with the glow-in-the-dark ink and on and on and on.
I've set a pretty comfortable shipping date but things might happen. With that said please know I will always be in touch, I will always be sharing every step of the process through project updates and I'm always available to answer questions, critiques or concerns.
Another thing of note is shipping, that's always my biggest challenge. I'm always looking for ways to make your packages arrive as safely as possible and in a timely manner. It's not easy... I've actually made friends with my local post-office dealing with such a difficult logistic but I feel I've made improvements and there is always room for growth.
This Kickstarter brings higher shipping costs to cover two third-party platforms designed specifically to make sure your packages are mailed as fast as possible and without any missing items. I will be using BackerKit and EasyPost so please bear with me and know those shipping costs are meant to reflect the best system possible.
All in all I'm glad you are here and thanks so much for backing!
