About

The Terror on Starbase X is a social deduction game for 5 to 10 players, where each player has a job or role on a space station. Most humans are loyal and want to survive, but a few humans have had their minds broken by the Alien and want it to succeed. One person is the alien, having lost all humanity.

Players take turns being the acting Commanding Officer and nominate someone to be the Mission Specialist. The Mission Specialist draws cards and chooses what to pass the Commanding Officer.

As the Commanding Officer, you better know who to trust. If you're a loyal human, you need to figure out who the Space Marine needs to shoot, get the Communications Array going and get a distress signal out, or power up the Shuttlepod and escape. Unless you really are the Alien or an Alien Sympathizer, in which case, you don't think that those Mission Objectives really need to be going into effect...

First Turn: For the first turn, the role of the Commanding Officer is determined randomly. Proceed to the Nomination Phase.

Nomination Phase: The Commanding Officer nominates a Mission Specialist. You may not nominate a player that held the post of Mission Specialist in the last turn. The matter goes to the voting phase.

Voting Phase: Vote Passes - Mission Specialist is Elected- Go to the Mission Phase. Vote Ties or Fails - Pass the Commanding Officer card one player to the right. They nominate a new Mission Specialist. If the vote fails twice, the third Commanding Officer of the round also serves as the Mission Specialist.

Mission Phase: The Mission Specialist draws 3 mission cards and picks two to give to the Commanding Officer. Reshuffle the cards when there are no cards remaining and you need to draw. The Commanding Officer must choose to play one of the Mission Cards. This determines if the Commanding Officer gets to order someone to do something (a Mission Objective card), the Alien gets to do something ( an Alien Strikes card), or nothing happens (the Eerily Quiet card.)

You're the Mission Specialist. Which two do you pass to the Commanding Officer?

Action Phase: If a Mission Objective card was played, the Commanding Officer orders someone to take an action. This is usually the Pilot, the Space Marine, the Mechanic, or the Communications Officer. If an Alien Strikes card was played, the Xenobiologist picks two alien rampage cards, discarding one and playing the other. (See Hatched Alien if any should be involved.) If there is no Xenobiologist or Hatched Alien, flip a card from the top of the Alien Rampage Deck. This sequence will be repeated if the card played was an Alien Strikes x 2.

If the Xenobiologist is in play, they might save a someone from a pretty terrible fate...

End Phase: Ready any exhausted roles that were not used this turn. Pass the Commanding Officer Card to the right, then proceed to the Nomination Phase.

Alien: The alien wins if the Communications array, Shuttlepod, and Life Support are all destroyed, or if every loyal human is dead. They also win if they are aboard the Shuttlepod when it leaves and are not killed by the Space Marine (either because the Space Marine is an alien, the alien sympathizer, or because the Space Marine’s weapon is not loaded).

Alien Sympathizers/Hatched Alien: Alien sympathizers and hatched aliens win if they are alive when the alien wins.

Humans: Humans have 3 possible win conditions. They kill the alien, they escape on the Shuttlepod (see Shuttlepod Victory Conditions), or they receive help via the Communications Array.

We feel our little social deduction game is clean, tight, balanced and enormously fun. During the process of designing the game we had all sorts of ideas that we wanted to add, but felt some things swayed the game balance one direction or another, and in some cases, added to the time when players preferred playing at multiple times in a sitting.

So, we will be introducing these elements as modular variants for the game. Letting players choose what elements to add without forcing you to play with all of the ideas. With Kickstarter, the natural place to adding these variants is as stretch goals, so without further ado, enjoy some stretch goal variants.

Stretch Goal #1 - $40,000

A new Role Card, the Central Computer - Housed Artificial Lifeform “It is unknown if the alien lifeform did any damage to the Central Computer when it arrived, but it sure is acting strange”.

Stretch Goal #2 - $42,500

A new Objective Card, the Medical Bay- Instead of using the Medical Officer in the game you can use the Medical Bay.

"The Terror on Starbase X turned a table of strangers into a laughing team of friends, complete with catchphrases that keep coming up weeks after we played. Recommended for families and friends. It's exactly the party game we needed!" - John Kaufeld

"Terror on Starbase X will have you fully engaged in everyone’s turn looking for subtle signs of collusion and treason. Use your observational skills and partial knowledge to suss out both friend and foe and succeed in your own role. Be careful not to reveal too much and expose yourself to the wrong person! It is like a social deduction logic puzzle wrapped in a retro-galactic theme. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be backing this one!" - Maureen McCardel

"A cleverly devised social deduction party game that is probably the most fun one could have fooling his friends into a state of trust while secretly yearning to leave them stranded to die in the coldness of space." - Zeke Coughlin

"No Bryce. The alien can't be cute and cuddly. It's a horrific alien that kills humans and wants to destroy the starbase, I'm not going to make it cute and cuddly" -Amanda Kahl

Risks and challenges

We've been playtesting, running, and enjoying The Terror for the past couple of years, and we're finally ready to bring it to Kickstarter. We've done a number of successful projects in the past, and while this is a new type of project for us, we're ready to expand our experience.

We have about a third of the art complete and the rest is just waiting to see how well the project goes. We want this to be a great product for our players as much as for ourselves.

We'll do our best to communicate any problems if they occur, and we're committed to being responsive to concerns or any troubles that our backers have. Ultimately, we'll do our best to make sure everyone ends up with the best product that we can deliver.
