About this project
Hey there LightBox Backers AND Future Backers. As the campaign has progressed we've been working hard on streamlining both our production and fulfillment processes and would like to share the efficiencies we've found by giving you 10% CASH BACK on all present and future LightBox orders. See PLEDGE UPDATES below for more detail!
Also check out the PLEDGE UPDATES section below to see how you can get an additional TWO FREE receivers on some pledges.
LightBox is a wireless, interface-free light controller made from a solid chunk of real wood.
The LightBox was born out of the frustration in achieving a desired room lighting situation which often means a lap around the room navigating a variety of hard to reach or tedious switches on the lamps you otherwise love.
With one simple, elegant motion it will control as many lamps in a room as you like. It's a joy to use, beautiful to look at and a compliment to the lights it controls.
To turn lights on with the LightBox - simply pick it up and turn it on its end. To turn lights off - just lay it back on its side. It will control as many lights in a room as you like.
Setup is simple - All you need to do is plug one of the supplied receivers into your electrical wall outlet and plug your lamp into that receiver.
Since Kickstarter doesn't let you make updates to pledge descriptions once a pledge has been made - we're calling out updates to pledges here.
UPDATE #1: For all "KICKSTARTER 2-PACK SPECIAL" rewards we're throwing in an ADDITIONAL TWO FREE RECEIVERS on top of the receivers already included in the pledge.
Perhaps this will make you consider giving one as a gift? I'm sure Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa would love one!
UPDATE #2: As the campaign has progressed we've been working hard on streamlining both our production and fulfillment processes. Since it's not possible to revise rewards after a project is live and backers have pledged -we'd like to share the efficiencies we've found by giving you 10% CASH BACK on all present and future LightBox orders.
The cash back will come via PayPal and we'll collect the info we need from you at the end of the campaign!
"A team of Californian designers have pushed light switches that bit closer to the dustbin of history with an ultra-user-friendly new invention" - read the whole article at Collectively.
"In a world full of robust but complicated devices for controlling your home, often revolving around touch-screens and LED indicators and smartphone apps, there's something appealing about the simple, elegant solution that the Lightbox provides." - read the whole article at TechDirt.
"It’s not like fiddling with light switches is a real, life-ruining problem for most people, but the beauty of being a human is that you have the freedom to choose between faffing around with lamps like a peasant, or being a stylish, LightBox owning mofo." - read the whole article at WhatCulture.
LightBox has been in development and testing for over a year. During this time we have built numerous prototypes and have worked hard to optimize both software and hardware design.
We love where we are with the current production prototype - its reliable, beautiful and fun to use. Now we're excited to take the next step which is to begin manufacturing LightBox in volume and share it with the world.

While the first LightBox production run won't be ready to ship in time for the holidays we know some folks might still want to give one as a holiday gift. With that in mind we're putting together a gifting envelope in time for the holidays including some beautiful 4x6 product shots of the LightBox and card explaining how the LightBox works and when the recipient can expect delivery.
You let us know in the survey at the end of the campaign if a LightBox in your order is a gift and we'll get one of these envelopes out to you before December 18th. The LightBox itself will be shipped in early 2016 according to the production schedule below.
What do I get with LightBox? The setup consists of the LightBox [a wood block controller] and one or more receivers which connect to wall plugs supplying power to lights.
How long does it take to set up? Less than 2 minutes - all you need to do is:
- Unplug your lamp[s].
- Plug the supplied receiver into the wall outlet.
- Plug your lamp back in to the receiver.
What kind of lights does it control? It will control any lamp [or other electrical device] that plugs into a standard electrical socket and draws less than 1200w.
What if I want to use 2 LightBox's close together - will they interfere with each other? Nope - each LightBox can be set to work on any 1 of 5 channels so you can have up to 5 working in the same area.
I need more than 5 receivers. How can I order more? No problem - just add $6 per additional receiver required to any of the rewards offering 5 receivers and we'll add them on to your order.
Can I plug more than one lamp into a single receiver? Sure - you can plug a power strip into a single receiver and in turn plug multiple lamps into the power strip. Note that the total draw still needs to be less than 1200w.
What kind of batteries does it use? It uses 3 x AA batteries that should last over a year with normal use.
What is the range? Line of sight range is currently about 80 feet. Range is less indoors and through obstacles but it should have no problem controlling all lights in a 800 square foot room.
How much power does a receiver use in standby mode? When the receiver is in standby mode it draws less than 1/10 of a watt.
What does the plug in receiver look like? We're still in the process of choosing the best receiver to ship with the LightBox but will look quite similar to the one below and capable of switching 10 amps @ 120v / 1200w.
How does it work? The LightBox uses an accelerometer to detect changes in orientation. On detecting a change it sends a low power RF signal to a plug-in receiver in the electrical outlet powering the lamp which turns the lamp on.
What countries will it work in? Along with the US and Canada we've just added EU and UK versions of the LightBox and made shipping available accordingly!
Risks and challenges
LightBox has been in development and testing for over a year. During this time we have built numerous prototypes and have worked hard to improve both software and hardware design. We love where we are with the current prototype - its reliable, beautiful and fun to use. Now we're excited to take the next step and begin manufacturing LightBox in volume.
The biggest challenge we face in taking our prototype into manufacturing is retaining the quality of wood construction in our prototype.
We want you to love the LightBox as much as we do so are committed to working directly with experienced local craftsmen and building each LightBox to the same high standard seen in our prototypes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
