A collection of Chimero's best essays on design, technology, and culture.
Scratch is an anthology of Frank Chimero's best writing on design, technology, and culture.
Hey Kickstarter! My name is Frank Chimero. Last year, I wrote a book about the whys of design called The Shape of Design. It was launched right here on Kickstarter in March of 2011, and a lot of people really love it. Here's a picture of a puppy with the book:
Now that you've saved that to your Pinterest, I can tell you the project was funded within a day, and when it was all said and done, about two thousand people got copies of the book through Kickstarter. Since then, thousands more have bought and read it. Incredible!
I'm back to announce another book, titled Scratch.
Scratch as in to start from scratch.
Scratch as in scratch paper.
Scratch as in scratch your own itch.
I'm digging through my archive of essays and printing the best writing I've done in the past three years. And I'm asking for your to help make this book possible.
Scratch is a book of essays on design, technology, and culture. There are pieces about social networks and horses, Radiohead and soup, pencils, paintings, poetry, pottery, and other words that start with the letter P. The book will have all of my most popular pieces, including "There is a Horse in the Apple Store" and my advice to graphic design students. If you'd like to read more, many of the essays are available on my website.
The book will launch with two new, exclusive essays, titled "The Soul Jar and The Bird Cage" and "A Book is a Map."
Sure thing, boss:
The rewards are tiered to include the costs of shipping based on your location. I've also included a few discounted "bundle" options if you'd like to purchase a copy of The Shape of Design as well. You can find more information on The Shape of Design and read the first chapter for free at its website.
In addition to the book, backers can also receive a Crossed Fingers poster. My apartment needed some big optimism, and perhaps yours does, too. (Poster is a 2 color screenprint, and measures 18x24". Standard frame size.)
$125 Pledge: Crossed fingers poster + Scratch, printed and ebook. Includes shipping anywhere in the world, except Idaho. Just kidding. We can ship to Idaho.
$55 Pledge: Bundle deal! Scratch + The Shape of Design printed and ebook. Includes shipping in US.
$57 Pledge: Bundle deal! Scratch + The Shape of Design printed and ebook. Includes shipping in Canada.
$60 Pledge: Bundle deal! Scratch + The Shape of Design printed and ebook. Includes international shipping.

$10 Pledge: Scratch ebook, in ePub (for iPhone, iPad, Nook), MOBI (Kindle), and PDF formats.
The book is a 5.5 x 8.5" hardcover with a linen buckram wrapping, and it looks like it will be about 144 pages. The production of this book will be very similar to The Shape of Design, so they should look great on the shelf together.
Good news! Unlike the last book, everything for this one is already written! And it's designed! We're working with the same printing press and order fulfillment people as The Shape of Design, so you can expect the same quality, and a smoother process. Things get easier the second time through. Here's what we're expecting:
Weeks 1-3: Kickstarter campaign
Weeks 4-5: Copyediting & Typesetting (Kickstarter funds clear)
Weeks 6-7: On press, binding (Bank clears transfer)
Week 8: Books shipped to the warehouse
Week 9: Order fulfillment
Week 10: US orders arrive
Weeks 11, 12, 13: International orders arrive
We're aiming for US backers to get their books in late August, and early September for our friends overseas. Of course, it is VERY important to say that this is only an educated guess, and the timeline is likely to change based on the number of books we are printing, binding, and shipping.
