Who We Are & What We Do
Fatventure Mag is a printed and digital magazine focusing on active lifestyles beyond the boundaries of weight-loss culture. We’re shining the spotlight on work by fat creators who love spending time outdoors, communing with nature, and being active, no matter what "fitness culture" has to say about it.
Fatventure Mag was co-founded by Alice Lesperance and Samantha Puc, two fat lesbians who wanted to create a space where fat folx could talk about their experiences in the active/fitness community without being devalued for their size, ability, or motivation. In partnership with our design editor, Carrie Alyson, we launched our first successful Kickstarter campaign in May 2018 and have since produced our first physical issue, digital content, and merchandise that is currently available through our webstore!
For issue two, we wanted to do something a little bit different, so we decided to introduce a theme. Fatventure Mag, Vol. 2: Home explores our contributors' relationships to their bodies, joyful movement, and the concept of home. We have an incredible team of writers and artists whose stories represent a wide variety of experiences and we cannot wait to put their words and images into print.
Our contributors, editors, and creators have been featured in The Atlantic, Autostraddle, Bitch, Nylon, The Advocate, SheKnows, Brooklyn Magazine and more. You can find work by our artists on platforms like Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, Mashable, Bitch, The Tempest, and elsewhere.
Fatventure Mag packs a punch. No matter who you are, we have something for you—and that's why we need your help to make our second issue happen!
Why We're Crowdfunding
Fatventure Mag is a much-needed critical and creative resource for fat people occupying a world that tells them again and again that their bodies shouldn’t look a certain way or engage in certain activities. We hope that Fatventure Mag will be one of many efforts to fight that attitude, online and in print—especially in the active world.
We seek to be as inclusive as possible and represent bodies of many shapes, sizes, and abilities. We hope to build a community through this project where we can all learn from and grow with each other.
Because we believe in the importance of paying creators for their work, we are turning to Kickstarter in order to raise the funds to pay our writers, artists, and editors. Beyond that, our $10,000 goal will also pay for:
- Printing and shipping Fatventure Mag, Vol. 2
- Printing and shipping Kickstarter perks, including stickers, embroidered patches, enamel pins and 5x7 postcard prints
- Covering Kickstarter fees
- Expanding digital content and paying our digital editors and contributors competitive rates
We believe that Fatventure Mag is needed in our world, and we hope that you will agree—and if you're able, that you'll pitch in (even just $1!) to help make this project into a reality!

If we raise at least $12,000, we'll add foil lettering to our cover!
Plus, if we raise more than our base goal of $10,000, we will aim to increase payments to our contributors and use any leftover funds to continue increasing our digital content.
Our wildest dream is to produce even more volumes of Fatventure Mag as we move forward with this project, and every little bit helps us get closer to accomplishing that dream.
We'd like to thank Jude Valentin for running our social media and putting together our Kickstarter video, J Aprileo and Vanessa Friedman for saying such nice things about us, every single publication that's written about us, our contributors for putting their faith in Fatventure Mag, our backers for helping us make this mag a reality, Moon Travel Guides for their sponsorship of our first issue, Bluestockings Bookstore for hosting our first launch party, and of course, YOU, for reading through this entire project description. You're amazing.
Now Let's Go On An Adventure!
Risks and challenges
For the sake of transparency, this is our second time running a Kickstarter project! We are utilizing every tool in our collective tool belt to secure the best price for each element of this project, to communicate openly and effectively with contributors, and to produce the highest quality magazine that we possibly can. We learned a lot during our first Kickstarter, and we're implementing those lessons now.
When it comes to publishing a collaborative project, there are always risks. We acknowledge that by putting your money into this project, you are extending your trust. We promise not to take advantage of that at any point and to be transparent in our communication throughout this process, especially if our funding goal is met.
We have done our best to create a timeline which will allow us to complete this project and get perks sent out in a timely fashion. If there are financial or timing issues, we pledge to keep communication lines open so that no one is in the dark at any point. We are so excited to expand Fatventure Mag with another physical issue and more digital content, and we deeply appreciate your support.
If you are not able to back this project financially but still believe in our mission, we ask you to please share the link with your family, friends, and social networks. This project is very much a collaborative effort, and everything helps!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
