Who We Are & What We Do
Fatventure Mag is a printed and digital magazine focusing on active lifestyles beyond the boundaries of weight-loss culture. We’re shining the spotlight on work by fat-identified women and non-binary writers and artists who love spending time outdoors, communing with nature, and being active, no matter what "fitness culture" has to say about it.
Fatventure Mag was co-founded by Alice Lesperance and Samantha Puc, two fat lesbians who wanted to create a space where fat folx could talk about their experiences in the active/fitness community without being devalued for their size, ability, or motivation.
After they proposed the idea on Twitter in January 2018, Alice and Samantha received an overwhelming number of inquiries from people who wanted to help cultivate that space. Many of those people—including design editor Carrie Alyson—have work featured in the first volume of Fatventure Mag. Many more have championed the project since it began to take shape, and the Fatventure team is endlessly grateful for every single one of those people.
Our contributors, editors, and creators have been featured in The Atlantic, Autostraddle, Nylon, The Advocate, SheKnows, Bustle, and Brooklyn Magazine. You can find work by our artists on platforms like Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, Mashable, Bitch, The Tempest, and elsewhere. Our contributors come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, and the caliber of their work is second to none.
In addition to work by the above-listed contributors, we are also featuring interviews with three big voices in the fat and active community:

These exclusive interviews round out our first volume, which is due to ship in the fall of 2018. Fatventure Mag explores everything from hiking to figure skating in a curated selection of essays, interviews, and listicles. This 50+ page, soft-cover zine dives into contributors' experiences in dozens of areas, including (but of course, not limited to) competitive dance, super-fat camping, transitioning and body-building, working as a fat nutritionist, and packing for cross-country bike trips.
Fatventure Mag packs a punch. No matter who you are, our first volume has something for you—and that's why we need your help to make it happen.
Why We're Crowdfunding
Fatventure Mag is a much-needed critical and creative resource for fat people occupying a world that tells them again and again that their bodies shouldn’t look a certain way or engage in certain activities. We hope that Fatventure Mag will be one of many efforts to fight that attitude, online and in print—especially in the active world.
We seek to be as inclusive as possible and represent bodies of many shapes, sizes, and abilities. We hope to build a community through this project where we can all learn from and grow with each other.
Because we believe in the importance of paying creators for their work, we are turning to Kickstarter in order to raise the funds to pay our writers, artists, and editors. Beyond that, our $12,000 goal will also pay for:
- Printing and shipping the first volume of Fatventure Mag
- Printing and shipping Kickstarter perks, including stickers, temporary tattoos, water bottles, bandanas, and bonus art prints
- Covering Kickstarter fees
We believe that Fatventure Mag is needed in our world, and we hope that you will agree—and if you're able, that you'll pitch in (even just $1!) to help make this project into a reality!

Our wildest dream is to produce multiple volumes as we move forward with this project, and every little bit helps us get closer to accomplishing that dream.

Risks and challenges
For the sake of transparency, this is our first time running a Kickstarter project. However, each of us has years of experience in writing, editing, and graphic design. We are utilizing every tool in our collective tool belt to secure the best price for each element of this project, to communicate openly and effectively with contributors, and to produce the highest quality magazine that we possibly can.
We've enlisted talent from all over the world and we've taken advice from people who have successfully crowdfunded projects on Kickstarter, some of them many times over.
When it comes to publishing a collaborative project, there are always risks. We acknowledge that by putting your money into this project, you are extending your trust. We promise not to take advantage of that at any point and to be transparent in our communication throughout this process, especially if our funding goal is met and we are able to produce this magazine and ship it to contributors and backers.
We have done our best to create a timeline which will allow us to complete this project and get perks sent out in a timely fashion. If there are financial or timing issues, we pledge to keep communication lines open so that no one is in the dark at any point. We are so excited to get Fatventure Mag off the ground, and we deeply appreciate your support.
If you are not able to back this project financially but still believe in our mission, we ask you to please share the link with your family, friends, and social networks. This project is very much a collaborative effort, and everything helps!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
