What is Querent?
What if you could use the tarot to generate characters, worlds, and entire campaigns?
Grab your favorite tarot deck and open up Querent: The Cartomancer's Tome, to generate all the characters and campaigns that you need for your games and stories. The possibilities with our guidebook are virtually endless!
Need a unique character for your D&D campaign, LARPing, or even for your novel?
Lay out the cards in our Personality Spread and let the cards tell you all about your character's strengths and weaknesses, key personality traits, and their deepest, darkest secrets.
Check out our Instagram for an example of a character being created. There are six posts that briefly explain the card's meaning and our interpretation of them.
How about generating an entire campaign?
The cards have you covered.
Our guidebook includes two spreads to use to generate campaigns: a Plot Outline Spread, and a Hero's Journey Spread.
Plot Outline Spread
What is your story really about? Find out here!
This spread generates suggestions for your campaign's setting, antagonists, main conflict and key choices for your players to make.
Learn about what events drive your characters to do what they do, and what might bring them to their demise!
Hero's Journey Spread
This spread follows the major stages of Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey" and uses common patterns of plot lines.
This spread takes your heroes on an epic archetypal journey where they are called to an adventure, traverse across a road of trials and temptations, deal with a crisis and a transformation, and then finally return home a changed person.
Players reveal each card of the journey as they go, allowing for play without a designated gamemaster (GM).
Querent can be played as its own standalone game for players who want a narrative experience without the hassle of stats and dice rolling.
Querent's system also integrates with pre-existing tabletop RPGs, for example Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, or Fate Core.
Listen to our interview with Ray at [insert quest here], where we break down how you can use Querent's systems.
Got Writer's Block?
Need to add a bit more life and depth to your side characters?
Querent to the rescue!
Check out this interview from the Infamous Scribbler blog and learn more about how author Rachel Brune, published novelist, plans to use our Personality Spread to create characters for her upcoming novella.
The books will be printed through IngramSpark's professional-grade print-on-demand service. Learn more about IngramSpark here.
The bulk order of books will be shipped to us in Vermont. We will then individually package and ship each book to backers via media mail.
Shipping costs are incorporated into the product price, which means free shipping within the United States!
Sorry, the physical copy of this guidebook is currently only available to United States backers. Hopefully in the future (once we have some experience under our belts) international orders will be received.
Fat Bird Studios is accelerated by Rad Magpie, a new nonprofit dedicated to supporting underrepresented creators and radical interactive media. Querent is one of Rad Magpie's first two games.
Risks and challenges
1. We are new to the Kickstarter process
We are combating this with extensive research into the process and we have a campaign plan to keep us successful.
In order to keep the quality high, we have chosen a strongly-recommended printer, IngramSpark. We will be requesting samples and do a test run of the book in order to ensure that it meets our standard of quality.
We are also planning on a small print run in order to learn more about the self-publishing process in a manageable way.
3. Keeping the project in-scope
We are working hard to ensure that we deliver our goal + any stretch goals in the time that we have laid out on our timeline. This way, we will deliver a great tome to backers within our deadline.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
