The Shrine of Cthulhu
Nearing completion, the sculpture measured a little over 5 feet, from wing tip to the tip of the longest tentacle. The width approached 3 1/2 feet, and the depth was nearly 2 feet. I made the sculpture using oil based clay, with the intention of making a plaster mold and neoprene casts.
Alas, life intervened and this intention never came to pass. The cost of casting such a large piece became prohibitive. My large work space was lost. With heavy regret, I tore the piece down, and used the resulting mound of clay for other, smaller works.
Over the years I've shared pictures of my sculpture on Lovecraft websites. I've received offers to buy the now non-existent work and a lot of positive feedback. I also received some negative criticism as well. The most constructive critique stated that my rendition of Cthulhu lacked the correct number of eyes as depicted by Lovecraft's famous doodle.
Cthulhu has six eyes in the Master's doodle; my new sculpture will have six eyes as well.
The Stars Are Now Right...
for me to recreate my Cthulhu Shrine. The new sculpture will retain the dimensions and design of the original (with the added correction of six eyes). The sculpture will be molded and then slip cast using neoprene. Neoprene is a sturdy latex material commonly used for mannequin construction and theatrical applications. The wings, tentacles, and Elder Signs will be cast separately from the rest of the sculpture. Some very simple assembly (requiring no tools) will be required upon delivery. The casts will be hollow and mounted on wood. Each sculpture will be hand painted and finished by me in your choice of three palettes: Eldritch Green, Undersea Bronze, or Oil Spill Black.
I will begin sculpting July 1. Molding, casting, and finishing will begin August 1. Shipping will begin in September. Depending upon interest in this project, a limited edition of up to 13 sculptures will be made. If I have just 3 sculpture sales, the project will proceed. Only 10 sculptures will be available for sale. There will be an additional 3 artist proofs. Regardless of the number of sculptures sold, 2 of these artist proofs will be given to two buyers of a Cthulhu t-shirt for $20 by the deadline of August 31. The cost for the sculpture is $400, which includes shipping within the U.S. Please inquire regarding international shipping before purchasing. I will also accept 4 monthly payments of $100 each for the sculpture. If you would like to do this, please send me a message before making the first payment.
Points To Remember
- These wall sculptures will be very large- almost as tall and a little wider than the average sized door. Despite of the sculptures' size, they will surprisingly light weight, because the sculptures will be hollow. So when you hang Cthulhu on the wall, the wall won't come a' tumbling down. Just make sure you're prepared to have this much Cthulhu in your life.
- This project will proceed if I receive 3 orders for the sculptures. A maximum of 10 sculptures will be offered for sale.
- There will be 3 artist proofs made. 2 of these sculptures will be given to two people who buy a Cthulhu t-shirt for $20.
- Sculpture progress updates will be posted at least weekly here and on my Youtube channel: Fatback's Puppet Shack.

Risks and challenges
I am confident that I can recreate my sculpture, with added improvements, in a timely manner. My sculpting skills have improved over the intervening years. The only challenge I foresee is time. I have a day job and work on my sculptures in the evenings and weekends. I will do my best to adhere to my schedule. I will also keep backers informed of my progress via this page and my Youtube channel. I will see this project through to completion for the simple reason that I want one of the sculptures for myself.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
