About

What is This Project?

Creating new relationships and sustaining existing ones among Loudoun County, VA restaurants, farms, and wineries to benefit the entire community is the heart of Farm-to-Fork Loudoun –an 11-day culinary celebration of locally sourced food. Months of intensive project team planning and organizing brought on board this year’s crop of participating restaurants, farms, and wineries from throughout Loudoun County. Participants then gather in late spring at the project kick-off – the Meet and Greet –to ignite or re-ignite their relationships. There they begin the process of deciding which farms the restaurant chefs will source from to create great tasting, 70% locally sourced menu items, and which wineries the restaurants will feature during the event. Once product choices are finalized, project restaurants then offer a special Farm-to-Fork menu to their patrons – residents of and visitors to Loudoun County – during the event from July 23, 2015 through August 2, 2015.

Who is the Project Founder?

Impacted by watching the movie, Food, Inc. and a vision of educating consumers in her community about why eating local is healthier and better not only for them but for the local economy, Miriam Nasuti founded Farm-to-Fork Loudoun in 2012. A resident of Loudoun County for 20 years, Miriam’s distinguished career spans some 32 years in public affairs, community relations, and event management, including a senior position with KYW-TV 3, the CBS news affiliate in Philadelphia. She is currently President and Marketing Specialist of Domenicon Marketing, LLC, which exclusively sponsors Farm-to-Fork Loudoun and a sister program in Frederick, MD. Equal to her experience, Miriam brings old-fashioned hard work and heart to the project and to that shared the stage with one of her mentors, Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm, who was featured in Michael Pollan's 2006 bestselling book "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and the movie Food, Inc., at Northern Virginia Community College's Loudoun County Campus this past fall where they inspired the young students and shared the story about the importance and many advantages of buying and eating locally

Who Benefits from This Project?

Farm-to-Fork Loudoun lifts up the farming community who choose to participate. It gives both well - and newly- established small family owned farms exposure and access to local chefs for selling their products.  Often lacking funds and the know how to effectively market themselves, the project provides the farmer with sophisticated marketing and advertising for an extended period of time. With new places to sell their products, both short and long term, profits increase (farms last year reported sales increases ranging from 1% - 3% to 50% during the event).

Independently owned restaurants also gain significant exposure through the marketing of Farm-to-Fork Loudoun. The program drives current restaurant patrons, as well as new ones, both in- and out-side the county, to participating restaurants. For most restaurants, sales increase during the course of the event, with restaurants last year reporting increases as high as 13% to 35%. For the local towns in which these restaurants reside, meal tax revenue is generated. Consumers get to experience what it means to “eat local,” often for the first time. From the extensive press coverage of the project, they also gain an understanding of how making this healthier change in their own diets can not only improve their general well-being, but make a contribution to their local economy. The Loudoun County community sees the positive buzz created from marketing the project – and promoting the county -- in local and regional print media and on TV, reinforcing what they already know: Loudoun County is a great place to live, work, and eat! Tourists from neighboring counties and Washington, DC come to the county to take advantage of this special “eat local” initiative, increasing visitor spending. The whole community is lifted up and feels a sense of community pride.

How Will My Contribution Be Used?

With a track record of impact established, now is the time for you to join us in making this important project even more effective. Your investment will fund one of the project’s most critical aspects as we near launch and run through May 28th, 2015: a more assertive and sustained marketing effort, including -

 1) A first-time blogging effort! We've never been able to bring on a creative person to start and maintain an interesting, engaging and timely Blog effort which will continue throughout the entire project and beyond. If we meet our goal, we have a creative Blogger on the sidelines ready to jump in with great farmer, restaurant, winery and full project Blog content.

2) A more aggressive and consistent social media effort on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram AND YouTube.

3) A larger on-the-ground distribution of flyers and other materials to reach a larger geographic area so more people know about the program, more meals are prepared hence the Chefs need to order more from the local famers and wineries, continuing to move the local economic needle upward!

4) A broader publicity effort with a wider reach to media within a 3 hour radius such as enticing foodies to travel from areas like Maryland, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Richmond, VA and other areas within that radius.

5) A stronger infrastructure with the hiring of several more students to support the marketing effort through trafficking flyers, posters, window decals and the many stop bys necessary so all our participants remain up to speed and have everything they need for a successful program! .

Invest in Farm-to-Fork Loudoun. Invest in helping to grow this community. Every dollar will make a difference.

Risks and challenges

An effective, aggressive marketing campaign through all channels throughout the duration of this 11-day event enables more people to hear about this project. And the more people that come out to enjoy locally sourced food the greater the benefits the project will bring to all our participants, consumers, and all of Loudoun County. Nevertheless, people make their own choices about which events to participate in, and at which restaurants to dine -- and even the weather on any given day can be a factor and impact people's decision-making. We can not control some of these factors. We can and do provide a first-rate event with a successful track record and experience has proven that extensive marketing maximizes getting the people out to participate.
