A few months ago I moved from New York City to the Catskill Mountains. With the move I decided it was time to make my dream job a reality. You know the dream job I'm talking about the “I’m going to quit my job and….” dream job.
My dream job was to turn my love for knitting into a business. While I've knit a few projects for commission as a favor to a friend here and there I've never had any desire to knit finished objects for sale. So, I looked to what I found to be missing in my own knitting/crocheting life. After years of trying to find the “perfect” knitting bag, with pockets and compartments and dividers, I finally decided (after throwing my knitting in a tote bag and my accessories into a small zipper pouch – both of which I received for free at an event) that simple is best. And I’ve been carrying my knitting around like this ever since. Now, my search for a “perfect” knitting bag merely consists of trying to find cute tote bags.
So here I am! Ready to produce my first yarn themed tote bag and zipper pouch. And just for the fun of it I've thrown in an enamel pin too.
I taught myself how to use Adobe Illustrator and designed two Yarn Universe designs. I'm a 90's baby, so as you'll see, my solar system includes a Yarn Pluto!
First, I've designed a Yarn Saturn Enamel Pin. I've tried to keep everything local so these will be produced by a company based in New Jersey and will measure approximately 1"x 1"
The Yarn Universe zipper pouch will include all 8 planets (plus Pluto as a bonus!) and will be printed on a 10z black cotton pouch measuring 10"w x 7"h x 3"g. These bags will be produced by a small woman owned and operated company based in New Hampshire .
The Yarn Universe shoulder tote will also include all 8 planets (again, plus Pluto!) and will be printed on a 15oz black cotton tote bag measuring 18"w x 14.5"h x 3"g with 25" handles. The tote will include a snap closure at the top. These bags will be produced by the same small company in New Hampshire.
I'm launching this on Kickstarter to help with the production costs. To produce good quality pins and bags it's far more economical to purchase in bulk, but doing so requires some start up capital. I'm hoping to eventually create an entire line of bags and pins with yarn designs and eventually to host yarn retreats here in the Catskills.
At this time I am only able to ship within the United States. If you live outside of the United States but are interested check out my website following the Kickstarter. There is no extra cost for shipping - the cost you see includes all shipping within the United States.

Risks and challenges
Are there any risk in supporting this Kickstarter? Not really. If I don't raise the capital necessary to produce the pins and bags, well, it'll just take a bit longer to produce them! And as the bags are a means to raise capital to eventually host retreats, it will take a bit longer before I launch the yarn retreats too. I've talked with all the companies I plan to work with to get a timeline for production turn around. The one snag that may come up is that for some reason this timeline changes following the completion of the Kickstarter. I've worked in some wiggle room so this shouldn't be a problem, but I can't predict everything and want to be entirely transparent about potential snags.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
