Hey there -- want to hear brilliant people explain how their work meshes and clashes with their personal lives? Surprises, revelations; intellectual stimulation? That's what we do on the audio program One with Farai, and you -- our community -- are just as important as every guest we interview.
Media outlets are slashing diversity; we are fighting back.
The first season of One with Farai from PRI Soundworks included guests who were black, white, biracial, East Asian, South Asian, Native American; gay and straight; U.S. born, immigrant, and non-American. This is our world right now, and definitely our future. We deserve to see ourselves fully represented. We shouldn't have to settle for media that is dumbed-down and doesn't show our true, fantabulous, colors.
But content isn't free! With your help, we can make D.I.O. (Do It Ourselves) media that points the way to a future where we are all represented in the news media, the economy, and society at large.
Who Am I?
For the purposes of the greater good, I'll let someone else toot my horn -- the versatile and award-winning actor Delroy Lindo, whose credits include The Cider House Rules and Spike Lee's Malcolm X.
When we spoke, we also focused on why he'd returned to university to get a masters' degree exploring the WWII Jamaican-British "Windrush Generation," which included his mother.
Many of you know me from my work on television (staffer at CNN, ABC, and freelance/guest on BET, FOX, HBO, and MSNBC), radio (NPR, KALW, WNYC); as an author of five-books-and-counting; as the founder of an early website, Pop and Politics (1995-2010); and as a print journalist whose body of work ranges from Newsweek to Spin, Vibe, The Guardian, and The New York Times. I'm doing independent media precisely because this is where I can bring you long-form conversations about future-forward issues, both from people you've long known and admired as well as those you should know.
We can make media more representative and diverse, more intimate, smarter, and have a good laugh too.
One with Farai offers the antidote to the sound-bite. But since we're all busy, you can listen to a 2 minute sizzle reel from Season One here:
And this is our PRI Soundworks show page (please SUBCRIBE on iTunes):
I love people most of all -- both those I interview and those I broadcast/write for.
This podcast is about how global visionaries blend life, work, and passion. We hear how Gloria Steinem embraces her "family of choice"; how Adam Merced/DJ Mode, helped raise his sister in the projects in the Bronx and became an international producer and music supervisor for the Knicks; and what Joi Ito of MIT's Media Lab learned from his transcultural childhood.
We don't dumb down. I respect you too much to do that. We tackle complex ideas, like what Ito (below) thinks of bioengineering and immortality.
Coming up this season: guests including bestselling authors Lalita Tademy and Richard Kadrey, and European political strategist Simon Vaut.
As a journalism professor at New York University as well as author and broadcaster, we need to model new ways for the next generation of journalists to produce serious, financially sustainable content. We at One with Farai are part of a movement to create those models, including PRX/Radiotopia; The Futuro Media Group/Maria Hinojosa; The Laura Flanders Show; and Daniel Alarcon, whose Radio Ambulante Unscripted is also part of the PRI Soundworks network.

============WADDAYA NEED THE MONEY FOR? ======
Our goal is a modest $35,000. If we don't reach that, we don't get any funds
As someone who did improv for years in college and after (sometimes Amy Poehler kindly let me join her onstage at UCB's Asscat years ago), I really love live events. I am jonesing to take this podcast into a room full of people. I want to get the same cross-section of brilliance we do in studio on stage. Shows and podcasts from Radiolab to the Nerdist to Snap Judgment know the value of "live." (Hint: you can also make money doing this, and content requires cash money to produce.)
One with Farai is part of the PRI Soundworks podcast brand. We're in partnership -- which means PRI gives us funding (deep bow; thank you!), but that we must raise at least half the money. Meeting this Kickstarter goal covers our basic Season Two costs and gives us a chance to get on a stage near you. (We can have a glass of wine after.)
My big-dream is to raise enough money to do podcasting AND. What exactly does that mean?
- First of all -- podcasting AND live events — which generate revenue.
- Podcasting AND cutting the longer content into short pieces for local stations.
- Podcasting AND terrestrial radio specials.
- Podcasting AND video.
We are winning.
We have already gotten some long-form terrestrial radio airing of the podcast; and are starting to produce short-form segments for public radio member stations. But again -- none of this is free.
So: we need you. Right here, right now. To fund brilliant conversations; diverse, sustainable media; and spread the word.
We can broadcast forward-thinking content across this country and across the globe. And maybe we can quite literally meet you where you live. But only with your help.
When you support us, you get bragging rights. You will have helped turn a dream into reality -- about serious journalism that is still fun and definitely diverse -- for the good of all involved.
Much love and thank you for the support,
Farai and our ace producer, Devin Maverick Robins -- from One With Farai, a part of PRI Soundworks
Oh -- here are some images of our incentives, because that's part of this fabulous Kickstarter thing. For a taste of the digital audio downloads, be sure and listen to the audio clips linked to every photo. Re: lectures, you can find plenty of samples of me online speaking at colleges and appearing on cable and network TV. And here's a talk I did at TedxBrooklyn a couple years ago about gentrification and the power of Hello. So the photos pertain to our few non-digital incentives. (I couldn't exactly put a plate of home cooked food on the site. I mean -- if I could, I would...but...)
(This is --deliberately -- a photograph of a photograph, marked up to make it not-easily-replicable online. I assure you the original + color/contrast correction + archival framing = mwah!)
Risks and challenges
We've already produced one season of One with Farai. We need your funds to complete season two... and go live on stage! Of course, we risk having started something amazing and not being able to grow it to scale. Your contributions will ensure that's not the case! Thank you again.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
