Thanks for checking out our product! Nothing can quite capture the feeling of riding a Faraday, but for a taste of what you can expect, we recommend you watch our video (above).
We're incredibly grateful to our backers and supporters—and for all of the amazing press we've received so far. Thank you! Here's a taste of what you've had to say about the Faraday Porteur so far:
“...both a means of transportation and something to be proud of” —Beth Carter, Smart Planet
“Don't be fooled by its low-fi looks…” —Dan Cooper, Engadget
“The World's Most Beautiful Electric Bike” —Alex Bogusky
“...an elegant, high-quality city bike that is comfortable and effortless to ride” —Momentum Magazine
The Faraday Porteur is the ultimate electric propelled utility bicycle - the first electric bicycle built by, and for, cyclists. Dubbed "the ultimate modern utility bicycle" by the Oregon Manifest bicycle design competition, the Faraday Porteur is an elegant, powerful electric bicycle - a high-quality city bike that is comfortable and effortless to ride – with or without the electric motor.
What will Faraday do for you?
Imagine...how many more people would ride their bikes instead of driving if they could pedal comfortably to the office in their work clothes, run errands in style, and blast up hills without breaking a sweat? Until now, no electric bike has come close to delivering the timeless style and delightful ride that makes each and every one of us love riding a bicycle. With the Faraday Porteur, everything has changed. We've put the "bike" back in "e-bike".
The Faraday Porteur's patent-pending pedal-assist delivers a subtle yet powerful rush of electric power when you pedal. Imagine the feeling of riding with the best tailwind you've ever had - anywhere you go. Faraday's state-of-the-art lithium batteries are hidden invisibly within the frame. Wondering where they are? We'll give you a hint...those classy double top tubes aren't just for good looks.
WAIT TILL YOU TRY BOOST MODE
At Faraday Bicycles, we believe computers belong on our laps, not on our handlebars, which is why you won't find any crazy LCD screens or other displays on our bikes. Riding the Faraday Porteur is as simple as hopping on, flicking the handlebar thumb switch to "ON", and pedaling away. There's no throttle - built-in sensors measure how hard you're working, and the electric motor's output silently matches yours. When you stop pedaling, the motor quickly shuts down. Want to save battery life or get a little extra workout? Flick the thumb switch to "OFF" and you're riding a perfectly normal bicycle.
Holding the thumb switch down activates Faraday's secret weapon - "BOOST MODE", an extra surge of power to help tackle the toughest hills, brave the fiercest winds, and bring out the biggest smiles. An e-ink display on the handlebar controller tells you how much battery you have at a glance.
LIGHT UP THE NIGHT
When you're riding a bicycle, your safety depends upon your ability to be seen. With the Faraday Porteur, ride in confidence knowing that they'll see you coming, every time. Faraday's high-powered LED headlights and taillights are built into the frame and controlled by an ambient light sensor so they come on automatically at dusk - just like your car. These are no blinky LED handlebar lights...at night, Faraday literally SHINES.
HAVE YOUR CAKE...AND CARRY IT TOO
Cargo bikes open up whole new worlds of possibilities, allowing you to carry loads you couldn't possibly carry on a normal bike - one more reason to leave the car at home. But many cargo bikes are also large and cumbersome for city riding. The Faraday Porteur delivers the best of both worlds. The Porteur's large front rack is connected securely to the frame (NOT to the front wheel) allowing you to motor home with up to 30 pounds of groceries on-board, while a quick-release mechanism allows you to remove the rack entirely to lighten your load, weave more easily through traffic, or take your Porteur with you on the bus or train.
The universal design of Faraday's quick release rack design means we will be able to release additional accessories in the future - racks of different sizes, materials, and colors, baskets, bags, dog carriers - you name it. In fact, Kickstarter backers will have the opportunity to propose and vote to select the next Faraday rack accessory that we'll design and produce. See the specs section for options to customize your Faraday's cargo rack.
FILL 'ER UP
Recharging the Faraday Porteur is as easy as plugging it into any standard outlet, just like your phone. Faraday's compact AC adapter is no larger than the charger for your laptop, and recharges the Faraday in just 45 minutes. When you buy a Faraday, you get not one, but two compact chargers. Leave one at home, one at work, in your bag, at your favorite cafe...it's up to you!
WHO RIDES A FARADAY?
The Faraday Porteur is for everyone – commuters, techies, design and bike lovers, baby-boomers, and those with hill phobia. Faraday was born amidst the infamous hills of San Francisco, but just because it's powerful enough to tackle the steeps of Twin Peaks doesn't mean it won't be right at home in your neighborhood. Faraday is equally comfortable cutting the Chicago wind, keeping you sweat-free in the Phoenix heat, or just plain turning heads on the streets of New York.
The Faraday Porteur is available in sizes S, M, and L, to fit riders of all shapes and sizes. See the sizing chart below to figure out which Faraday is right for you.
Whoever you are, wherever you're from, and wherever you're going, pedal-assist means you'll get there without breaking a sweat. A high quality steel frame and top-tier components mean you’re riding a very nicely made bicycle. And the Porteur’s beautiful design means you’ll look great doing it. Sounds like there’s a pedal revolution brewing.
Thank you for everything!
Over the past year, we've brought the Faraday Porteur from an award-winning concept to the verge of production entirely because of the encouragement of supporters just like you. Nothing could feel more appropriate than bringing the bicycle that was voted "People's Choice" directly to the people, via Kickstarter. Please spread the word, join the movement, and help make the Faraday Porteur a reality for bicyclists and soon-to-be bicyclists everywhere.
Your support will allow us to build our first production run of bicycles if we reach our fundraising goal of $100,000.
We're excited to share an additional feature that we'll be able to add to the Faraday Porteur if we exceed our minimum fundraising goal. If we reach $300,000 in pledges, we will be able to integrate Bluetooth into the Faraday's electronics and create a custom mobile app allowing Faraday owners to wirelessly control features of the bike such as the pedal assist level and the blinking pattern of the lights. We'll also add other cool features useful to non-Faraday owners such as a bike shop locator, information on local bike routes, and reviews on Faraday's favorite cycling accessories and products. Backers will be able to vote on their favorite features as we design the app, and ALL BACKERS, AT ANY LEVEL, will receive a free download.
Take a look below at the exceptional rewards we're offering as a thanks for your support. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

No, it does not. It could, but that would make it a LOT harder to ride … you wouldn’t have nearly as much fun, we promise.
No, it does not. Regenerative braking may be great for cars, but it’s not as good for bikes. Instead, Faraday has conventional high quality disc brakes and a quick charger to fill up the battery in no time.
In the Faraday’s new design, the seat mast is a thing of the past. You can adjust the height of the seat on the Faraday just like any conventional bicycle.
Michael Faraday (1791 – 1867) was a pioneering British physicist whose research in the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry paved the way for today’s safe, modern electric motors – like the one in your Faraday! It’s our homage to one of the greats of science. A little nerdy? You bet!
On the outside, the Faraday Porteur looks almost exactly like the bike that won People’s Choice at the Oregon Manifest, but on the inside, we’ve changed almost everything – and that’s a good thing. We’ve souped up the battery, improved the electronic hardware and software, and made sure every component on the bike is robust, waterproof, and serviceable.
The 2013 Faraday Porteur carries a two year warranty on all components, frame, and batteries.
We’re very sorry that we can’t support international sales at this time. We’re excited to bring the Faraday to riders outside of the US in the near future, but at this point, our sales and service infrastructure does not support international sales. If you’re an interested international buyer, please get in touch! We’ll let you know as soon as the Faraday becomes available in your country. Thanks for the understanding.
Servicing the Faraday is just like servicing a conventional bicycle. In fact, with the super-robust Shimano Alfine hub, your bike shouldn’t require much servicing at all! In the event that your Faraday’s electronics need to be serviced, contact Faraday’s service department and we’ll connect you with a local bike shop who can quickly replace any damaged components and get you back on the road.
The Faraday turns on with a simple “ON” button on the rear of the bike. Once ON, you can control whether the pedal assist is enabled, disabled, or in “boost” mode with the Faraday’s thumb switch. That’s it!
A Porteur (sounds like “por-tour”) bike is a classic cargo bike style first used by the newspaper couriers of Paris in the early to mid 1900’s. We bet they wished they had motors back then!
Martin Kay is an SF-based graphic designer who’s done some amazing work creating Faraday’s graphic identity.
Chris McNally is an SF-based illustrator and printer with a love for bicycles and an impressive portfolio of beautiful illustration – check him out: http://chrismcnally.com

The Faraday Porteur is a unisex design, meaning it works just as well for men and women, and we have standard sizes to fit riders from 5'2" and up. A step through frame is another great bicycle design, and we plan to add a step through model to the Faraday lineup in the future - however, the Faraday Porteur does not currently come in a step through version.
The rider weight limit for the Faraday Porteur is 275 lbs.
Absolutely! The Faraday Porteur will have standardized attachments on the seatstays and rear dropouts allowing you to attach a rear rack.
Absolutely! The battery can be easily removed and replaced by any local bike shop. We're using a high quality lithium chemistry that we expect should provide many years of service but, in the event that a new battery is required, a replacement will cost approximately $400.
