So what's all this about?
Welcome Commanders, I'm Dan Grubb.
I've been working with 19 authors over the past few months, all of them sanctioned by Frontier Developments to write Official Elite Fiction.
This project will produce audio books, paperback books, hardback books and boxed set editions including special edition boxed set versions exclusively for this Kickstarter campaign.
The books are all based in the Elite universe, a universe created by Frontier Developments within which their new game Elite:Dangerous is set.
Why audio books? Because they're cool, that's why! Everyone can enjoy an audio book.
It doesn't matter if you're dyslexic, blind, bed bound, busy, stuck in traffic, at the gym, bored at the opera...
The first Elite computer game, released back in 1984, was the first 'open roam' game, giving players freedom to choose their own path. If you wanted to earn money being a trader, you could, if you wanted to earn money by being a pirate, that was your choice. The important part was that it was entirely YOUR choice.
The game was so popular that a further three incarnations of it were released. These were 'Frontier Elite:2', 'Frontier First Encounters' and an open source version made by the fans called 'Oolite'. The community is so passionate about this game and the fiction that surrounds it, that some have been waiting patiently for almost 30 years for its re-release. That time is finally approaching.
Back in November 2012, Frontier Developments launched their own Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of the latest version of Elite called Elite:Dangerous. So far, over £2 million has been raised to make this game a reality. As part of this campaign, authors were offered the chance to write officially sanctioned fiction via an 'author pack'. Many of these packs were taken, proving once more that the passion and commitment to the project from the Elite community knows no bounds.
The new game is due for release early next year and features a HUGE gaming environment based on the 200 Billion+ stars in the Milky Way Galaxy (including known exo-planets) and will have loads of different ways to play, places to visit, items to trade, bounties to chase and missions to complete. The freedom to roam within this universe is paramount to Frontier's plans.
The Fantastic Elite Fiction books are all based faithfully in this universe and are written by the fans, for the fans.
What makes this official Elite fiction so special is that it is linked to the Elite universe in two very important ways. Not only are the books based in the gaming universe, the gaming universe will have elements from the books in it too. This ensures that they will appeal to both gamers and science fiction fans alike.
The passion within this community does not stop at the game alone.
For those of you who are interested in joining this amazingly diverse and global community there are a multitude of websites, forums, fiction, meetings and even a radio station called Lave Radio (Lave is the planet players started on in the original game).
The community have also embraced this project and you can meet many Elite fans on the comments page of this campaign.
Come and join our glorious mission Commanders,
2. Elite:Lave Revolution by Allen Stroud
Here's a piece of original music Allen has written called 'The Revolution' to accompany his piece of Fantastic Elite Fiction;
3. Elite:And Here The Wheel by John HarperHere's John talking about why he wants to see his work as an audio book;
4. Elite:Mostly Harmless by Kate Russell
Here's a great trailer for 'Mostly Harmless'... enjoy!
5. Elite:Tales From The Frontier, an anthology of 15 stories by Darren Grey, Tim Gayda, Allen Farr, Lisa Wolf, Ulla Susimetsa, Marko Susimetsa, Rose Thurlbeck, Chris Booker, Alexander Saunders, Gareth Bailey, Nicholas Hansen, Ramon Marett, Frederick Burbidge, Matthew Benson and Christopher Jarvis.
Here's Chris Jarvis (who some will know as Commander Thane from 'Escape Velocity') reading an excerpt from his story 'Children of Zeus'
Here's a trailer for the anthology, created by Ramon Marett, author of 'The Easy Way Out';
The anthology will feature some amazing illustrations, one to accompany each story. To give you an idea of the quality of these, here is Arto Heikkinen's piece to accompany Ulla Susimetsa's story 'Blood is Thicker';
Here is another piece to accompany Marko Susimetsä's story 'Beyond Civilisation'.
All these stories are Fantastic and feature geographically and politically accurate depictions of the Elite Universe. These stories are works of art and I have been tasked with getting them out to the world.
Here's how we're going to do that;
Each story will need beautiful covers designing and an ISBN assigning. There is marketing and promotional work to do including blog posts, forum threads, podcasts, radio appearances and even media and TV appearances. We also plan to release great looking book trailers for each book including some in game footage, stunning titles and music and even some live action sequences using actors and sets. The good news is that we have a lot of this stuff covered already!
What we need you guys on board for is the final product of all our hard work.
Here's the plan Commanders,

A note on pledge gift 'rankings';
Each level of support has a name (or ranking) that is loosely based on those in the original game such as 'harmless', 'poor', 'Elite' and so on. These are in no way meant to suggest that by choosing the 'poor' ranking that we consider your pledge any less generous, we simply wanted to give the pledge levels these names as a respectful nod towards the original game, of which we are huge fans.
• The production of audio versions of each of the books using professional voice actors, including official game sounds (weapons, engine noises, theme music). We already have permission from Frontier to use their soundscape and they are collecting those sounds in a databank we will have access to following the success of the Kickstarter.
• The creation of downloadable and hard copy audio books.
As well as the official in game soundscape, the audio books will also feature completely original music composed by Allen Stroud. Here is a concept piece called 'Tension in the Prism System' intended for Drew Wagar's 'Elite:Reclamation'.
• The production of paperback and hardback copies of each of the four books. • The production of standard paperback and hardback boxed sets.
• The creation of limited edition paperback and hardback boxed sets exclusively for supporters of this Kickstarter.
Here's a handy pie chart!
There! It couldn't be simpler. We need to run the project while paying professional actors, sound engineers, printers, book binders, cover designers, typesetters and all the other folks involved in the creation of top quality audio and physical book production.
So, what if you only backed the Elite:Dangerous Kickstarter because you wanted the game?
Well, in the same spirit as the novel 'The Dark Wheel' by Robert Holdstock which was released with the original game to give players guidelines to the moral and legal codes they should aspire to, all these Elite stories contain information that has been deemed suitable by the game designers, meaning everything therein will have some bearing on the in game universe. This could be hints at profitable trading routes, areas to avoid because of excessive piracy and also a good idea of the state of the relationship between the various factions including the Federation, the Empire, the Alliance, the fearsome Garry's Pirate Clan and the mysterious Dark Wheel...
You've already backed an Elite Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign, what's in it for you?
An awesome upgrade, that's what! If you have already helped the Elite project in all its many forms, then you deserve a little something for your help. That's why, if you donate at the single hardback level (£25) or greater, we will give you ALL FIVE OF THE COMPLETED EBOOKS FOR FREE as soon as you send us the pledge email from your previous Elite 'mission' from either Kickstarter or Indiegogo.
For the £25 pledge, standard backers get themselves a ticket to the Fantastic Elite Fiction Meet to be held in 2014.
Veterans will receive a free ticket upgrade to the Golden Ticket level, giving them access to the event a full three hours before standard ticket holders.
You'll also receive a certificate proving your Veteran status that you can hang proudly in your cockpits!
And if your previous pledges secured you either 1, 2, 3, 4 or all 5 of the ebooks, please accept an upgrade to 1, 2, 3, 4 or all 5 COPIES OF THE AUDIO BOOKS for your continuing support. I have added details of how this upgrade works in the FAQs.
Why should you get involved?
Audio books are notoriously expensive to produce but are also an important way of getting these great books out to millions of folks who would not otherwise have access to them. We're not just talking about the blind and partially sighted community here (although they will obviously benefit), there are also the millions of folks for whom the traditional reading experience just simply isn't practical. Take the example of somebody with chronic back pain who can't hold a book or ereader for extended periods of time or somebody whose life is just too busy to have the time to curl up with a good book. There's also the millions of folks with Dyslexia and various other conditions that prevent them from enjoying the traditional reading experience. Check out this excellent short film made by 13 year old Mark Wagar, specially for this project.
Audio books allow us to enjoy great stories while still being able to continue with our busy lives, be it at the gym, in the office or while slaving over a hot stove.
We will be producing hardcopy versions of the audio books too and will be offering a signed insert with autographs from both the authors (in the case of the paperback and hardback books) AND both the authors and cast (in the case of audio books) in the more exclusive pledge gifts.
Audio books are important and it's our mission to make them cool again.
As these stories will be released alongside the game in 2014, we have just one shot at this so let's get this project funded!
Right on, Commanders!
Fantastic Books Publishing
Risks and challenges
Problem: Printing the books in paperback and hardback may present a delay in delivery.
SOLUTION: We have already found 6 separate printing firms, aside from the one chosen, who have all promised to fulfil orders at very short notice.
Problem: Audio production may be delayed due to actor availability.
SOLUTION: We have many actors in mind for these projects and all have been made aware they are on a 'list'. This gives them the incentive to keep their diaries clear for us as we cannot book their time, only reserve it until the project is funded.
Problem: We are based in a small village in East Yorkshire and as such may be subject to power failure during the project.
SOLUTION: We have many spots around East Yorkshire where we can go in emergencies to continue administering the project, we also keep our content on cloud storage so it can be accessed from anywhere.
Problem: Getting signatures from our International authors for the signed copies.
SOLUTION: On the completion of the kickstarter, we will add up everything that needs signing for each author and send a huge package to them. They will then sign the contents and send the package back to us or send each gift on to each pledger, whichever is most cost effective depending on the geography. This has already been agreed with the authors.
Problem: The flight suits are eaten by our company mascot Milly the Labrador.
SOLUTION: We have made spares for this very reason!
