THE SPLAT PACK IS BACK!
Big news here at FantaCo! Authorized by the Balun estate.
100 PAGE SQUARE BOUND BOOK ISSUE

We are VERY proud to announce the triumphant return of the legendary horror film magazine Deep Red! Yes, you read that correctly. Deep Red has risen from the grave—with the original core of contributors leading the charge! That’s right! Steve Bissette, Dennis Daniel, Greg Goodsell, Shane M. Dallmann, Kris Gilpin, and Graham Rae are together again, for the first time in over 28 years! And that’s not all! Acclaimed genre journalists Chris Poggiali, Art Ettinger, Nick Cato, David Zuzelo, Bruce Holecheck, and Mike Hunchback have joined the team—a team that will undoubtedly continue to grow and influence a new generation!
Veteran staffer Dennis Daniel proclaims, “We’re gonna deliver the goods the Deep Red way! Better duck… the splat pack is back!” And man—he’s not kidding! With that sentiment succinctly stated, here is our battle cry: We promise to remain true to the integrity and legacy of Chas. Balun and his groundbreaking magazine.
At the same time, we fully realize that times have changed. Sadly, Chas. is no longer with us. That does not mean that the magazine should not continue. In fact, Deep Red will ALWAYS continue to deliver news, reviews, interviews, and information that you'll find NOWHERE else. That’s a promise.
Deep Red has always been about family. It has always been about the wonderful feelings that we ALL encounter whenever we sit down in front of a comic book, TV set, or movie screen. It has always been about the monsters and things that go bump in the night—be they new or old—that we encounter, embrace, and fall in love with.
So come on, gang… join the party! To quote Nick Cato: “Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the newsstand! Talk about lunatics taking over the asylum! We’re keeping things as RED as Uncle Chas. taught us!”
As Deep Red’s incisive art director James Whiting says, “It’s time to bring back the BLOOD!” Here’s just a taste of what’s in store…
• Veteran DR staffer Greg Goodsell returns with the sequel to his seminal chapter in The Deep Red Horror Handbook—The Return of the Unwatchables! • Dennis Daniel looks back on the early days of Deep Red, remembers Chas. Balun, and speaks on the future of horror... and on what scares him today! • Chris Poggiali unleashes his EPIC interview with MPM distribution’s (Savage Streets, The Gates of Hell, Night of the Zombies) exploitation kingpin Lon Kerr! • Mike Hunchback examines and dissects George Romero’s "second" Dead trilogy! • Kris Gilpin chats with Del Howison—actor, author, and owner of Burbank’s bloody bookstore, Dark Delicacies! • John Szpunar talks Eerie pubs, Warren mags, and Skywald horrors with comic book historian Mike Howlett! • Shane M. Dallmann (or Remo D, if you’d prefer!) ponders the lasting cultural influence and impact of the television horror host! • Nick Cato pounds the beat by moonlight as he reports on New York City’s midnight movie scene! • Graham Rae deconstructs and analyzes Antonio Margheriti’s misguided masterpiece Killer Fish! • ASTONISHING new artwork by comix legends Putrid Matt Carr and Eric Rot! • Layout and art direction by James (Slaughterhouse magazine) Whiting! • Compiled and edited by John (Xerox Ferox) Szpunar! • Much, MUCH more!
And that’s just the TIP of the iceberg! Make no mistake about it, Deep Red is here to stay! We have assembled a DREAM TEAM of genre journalists and artists, the likes of which has not been seen in YEARS. Head to the mountains and spread the news! THE BEAST IS BACK!
Now more than ever—LET’S PAINT THIS TOWN RED!
