About this project
We need your help to give this story wings. Your gifts to this campaign help us throw a free public premiere for the whole city of Chattanooga: AUGUST 16 AT THE TIVOLI THEATER. GET YOUR FREE TICKETS HERE: BUILDMEAWORLDFILM.COM
Your gifts also fund:
1) The Howard Summit, a round table for the community around the issues of the film. Held at The Howard School, Saturday, August 18 at 10am.
2) More screenings of the film around Chattanooga and beyond.
3) The ongoing work of The Ceros Fund, launched in 2011 to tell more stories just like this.
The Howard School was founded in 1865, making it the oldest black public high school in the South. Four years ago, it was called a “dropout factory.”
In 2011, we at Fancy Rhino started making a short about the school through a MakeWork grant. We heard rumors that the State was moving in, that the school might be shut down. We wanted to document.
But we found we couldn’t observe without taking part. We started teaching a film class, and found with time that the story grew. So we gathered support from community members to make a feature length movie. Now it's time to release it to the public, so we need your help.
Yes! At the premiere and followup showings we will be selling some of the merchandise. All proceeds will go to the documentary and Howard. But, in the meantime, support the campaign and get your collection started today!
Premiering a film is expensive, especially when you want to make it free for the whole city to see! But with your help we can pay for the space, the workers, the food and all of the other fun things that we want everyone to enjoy.
Beyond that, we want to get this story in front of as many people as we can. That means hosting more events. We're especially excited about The Howard Summit at the Howard School on August 18 at 10a, where we'll gather the community at round tables to talk about the issues of the film and create a plan of action. Pancakes, bacon, butter and syrup. BE THERE!
We want to make sure that we don't have to turn people away at the door. By reserving a ticket, you let us know that you are definitely coming, not sort of coming and we can plan accordingly.
Definitely. Right now we want to focus on getting the story to Chattanooga, because that's who the film is for and about. But if people here love it (and we hope they will) we're taking this story to the rest of the world!
