Director's Note: So we made our goal in 1 hour 58 minutes... we have some very generous local fans! BUT LISTEN UP!
We can still use YOUR help. All additional funds raised passed our goal is still a wonderful measure of your desire for a local convention. The higher we go the more prepared we will be for next year by having much needed technical and logistical funding taken care of... I wouldn't be a good event director if I wasn't already planning things for next year! Also some of the pledge levels COVER you for next year's event or...9001 Passes. Thank you all so much.
Your pledges of 30$ or more now cover you for 2014, and will aid the development of next years convention.
Hello Con-Life, welcome to Dothan!
Fanaticon is Dothan, Alabama's first Multi-Genre and Hyperlocal Con focusing in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comics, Anime and Gaming!
Fanaticon is the direct result of my personal journey of being a Geek/Gamer in the south and the wonderful people I've met along the way.
How did we get here? Where are we going?
My answer to that question is in this letter to my friends, con-goers, customers and future Kickstarter supporters below.
This one is for you guys. Enjoy the read.
A few years back I was just a lonely geek/gamer in Dothan, AL. I had just moved into town from a small neighboring city (Daleville, Al) and was attending Troy University Dothan. School was...well school. And needless to say I was ready to meet some like-minded individuals, Nerds.
I gathered my Magic cards, inventoried my Anime, cataloged my Sci-Fi film collection, and got my dice out; I was ready to get my geek on!
But that was when things took a turn for the worst... I started searching for the local game-shop and... No Dice (Pun Intended)
I was informed by another local at the book store that the town had been without game store for years! I was heartbroken... not for me alone, but for the community.
I was lucky enough to grow up in a time where comic book stores were in almost every town, some of you may remember those days. Heroes for Hire in Daleville was where I got my first comic book. Campaign Headquarters in Enterprise would be the place I saw my first game of Magic: The Gathering and miniature games. After that visit my imagination was captured from the start. Knights Vigil Comics in Dothan was where most of my customers got their start, and they still talk about those days with a glimmer in their eye! I played in my first booster draft at Empire Comics in Enterprise, AL (Who will be attending Fanaticon!) and most of all, I met folks who were into the same thing as I... all these wonderful memories were thanks to LOCAL businesses!
Flash forward to 2010 and the infrastructure of the "Nerdwork" was gone. Some of the shops I remembered from my childhood closed up and moved on. The southeast had a major crack in the ring of gaming and geekery and it had to be filled, although I prefer the term: reforged!
FANATIX was born.
I decided that it was time to retire from the world of gamer, and get behind the counter. I wanted to give folks a game store to believe in. Somewhere to meet new people, compete and play card games without heckling from the outside world...and even better a place to bring the outsiders.. IN. I needed to see kid's AND adult's eyes light up when they saw the brightly colored boxes of board games they had never heard of. I needed to see people come in and be surprised when their fellow shopper says, "Oh I love Doctor Who also!". I needed to see communities rise again, Video Game Communities, Anime Clubs, Magic Travel Teams, Pokemon Travel Teams, cosplay groups and most of all the Fanatix Family...
Relationships have started in my store and lifetime friendships made. I've seen a kid go from learning Magic: The Gathering, a game he had never heard of, to competing not once, but twice, in the MTG Pro Tour and now i'm giving him and others a chance to qualify in their own hometown! In just over 3 years we have grown from 800 square feet to over 3000 square feet of store space with the help of our great friends at 1Up Games (who will be at Fanaticon as well). They also share our love of community and carry the torch for console gaming events! We have run numerous tournaments and have finally earned the privilege of hosting Dothan's first Pro Tour Qualifier for Magic: The Gathering. This premiere tournament will draw hundreds of Magic Players to the City of Dothan! All of this was made possible by my hometown heroes, my customers...my friends. Fanaticon celebrates you and what you have built and it only gets better from here!
Thus, FANATICON was born.
This day is for you guys. All the folks I've met along the way. All the Fans of different games, movies, comics, shows, costumes, characters, and fandoms! This day is the one day where all of you geeks that I've met or haven't met (past, present, and future) will come together and converse about the nerd world we live in. Talk about your current interests, compete in trivia contests, learn about one another's interests by going to panels and discussions. See wonderful costumes made by locals. Meet artists, writers, and dreamers that all started from a place just like we did, the South.
This convention is your convention and you alone can make it great.
To quote Mikey from the Goonies.."Come on guys, this is our time."
I hope you didn't TL;DR, but if you did, just know this.
Fanatix and Fanaticon were born from love of all things creative and geek. We want you to have the same opportunities and experiences as anyone in the world. That's our mission; always has been, always will be.
Admittedly due to limited time and size of venue, Fanaticon Alpha has a chance to be somewhat exclusive. Pledge early to guarantee your attendance... Kickstarter Membership levels are used for priority in case of overcrowding. Think of it as the difference between 50 yard line tickets and the nosebleed section.
Funds raised will be properly invested back into Fanaticon just as I have properly invested and grown your game shop.
Imagine where Fanaticon will be in 3 years...heck wait til' next year... i've already started working on it.
Humbly and sincerely yours,
Phillip Chalker - Owner/Director

Risks and challenges
Fanaticon's first year presents a chance to start this annual event out with a solid foundation. A core group of followers to help make next year, and each year after that better and better.
It all starts here!
A major challenge for us is preparing the venue space properly, having funds means better event equipment, games, guests, and opportunities for next year.
Having a great first year makes talking to future guests so much easier guys!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
