NEW! Stretch Goals!
Yay! We've hit our target! That means Ella Upgraded Volume 1 is definitely happening - and that means we can put some thought into fun extras we can offer for the rest of the campaign. We're being deliberately careful here - too many Kickstarter campaigns get carried away with extravagant bonus merchandise that ends up costing more to produce and deliver than the comic you backed in the first place!
With that in mind, and because we're very conscious that Ella Upgraded is pitched at kids, we want to offer stretch goal extras that won't detract from production on the book itself, but will also add value and creativity for our readers.
So...when we hit the following targets, we'll unlock the relevant bonuses.
£2000 - Every backer of the paperback or hardback book will receive an Ella Upgraded colouring sheet, and a cut-out and make Ella Upgraded model standee. Backers of the digital editions will receive PDF versions to print at home.
£2200 - if we can raise this much, we'll extend the book itself to include a bonus section showing how the comic was made. This won't just be a gallery of sketches, but a step-by-step "How To" guide with commentary and explanation to help young readers understand how comics are made - and hopefully inspire them to try making their own!
When 11-year-old Ella is in an accident her scientist brother saves her life by putting her beloved GameBox console in Ella's brain! Now Ella can gain the skills and abilities of her favourite video game characters...but does she have what it takes to become a real superhero?
What's the story?
When we first meet Ella and her brother Josh, she's been reluctantly dragged along to his meeting with the science faculty at his college where he's presenting his theory on bioelectronic synthesis. Ella couldn't be less interested - she's obsessed with her GameBox, an old retro games console that their father left her.
In fact, she's so obsessed with it that when she wanders off for a snack she doesn't look where she's going and is in a terrible accident.
Josh is able to save her life using his research, but has to implant the remains of the broken GameBox in her brain so he can upload data using the game cartridges to rebuild her nervous system. Of course, as soon as Ella hears this she...well, see for yourself.
Yep, Ella has been upgraded! She's now able to absorb the skills and abilities from any game cartridge that she plugs into her brain. While Josh frantically tries to work out how this happened, Ella sets out to become her town's first real superhero - but finds that fighting crime in real life isn't as easy as it looks.

What was the inspiration for Ella Upgraded?
Writer Dan Whitehead has worked in and around the comics and games industries since the 1990s, and created Ella Upgraded for his own tween daughter. He took inspiration from the fast-paced storytelling of classic superhero comics, in particular early Spider-Man, as well as the self-awareness of classic British strips such as Billy the Cat and The Leopard of Lime Street in which ordinary school kids embark on amazing heroic adventures.
There are laughs, there are daredevil thrills but at the heart of Ella Upgraded is the sweet tale of a brother and sister who drive each other crazy, but would do anything for each other.
Who is the creative team?
Dan has been writing professionally since 1991, and has worked in film, television, video games and comics on brands such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Rugrats and Looney Tunes.
P.R. Dedelis is an artist from Poland who's been drawing since reading his first Donald Duck comic book at the age of 5. Since then he hasn't stopped and has been drawing professionally for nearly a decade, working on titles like 5 Seconds, Word Smith (Sigmate Studio), Team Synergy (HBComics) and This Land (Aroha Comics).
As well as her own brilliant all-ages comic series Imaginary Gumbo, Abby is a regular artist and colourist for 2000AD and related titles.
Eisner-nominated letterer Jim has worked on high profile award-winning books from BOOM! Studios, Dark Horse, Image, Titan Comics and more.
What is the current state of the project?
The first 24 pages are complete and work is underway on the final 24 pages that will make up this initial 48 page volume of Ella's adventures.
