About this project
Hey I'm Ian, frontman and keyboardist of Faintly. You may have already read the tagline for this project, "We all have things we want to share with the world, but are just waiting for the right time to do so." What does that mean to me? In one word, honesty.
As I'm sure you heard in the video, I was born with only one ear, and one thumb. And until now, I have never wanted to share ANY of that info with anyone. Well, I shouldn't say that, I've wanted to share it with everyone in the world, but was afraid. Some of you may have already known about my physical differences, but this isn't about informing others as much as it's about allowing myself to be the most honest person I can be, so I have nothing holding me back or standing in my way of my goals and ambitions! This album is my way of expressing EVERYTHING that has bothered me over the years, from my personal issues, to the loss of band members, to eventually losing the enjoyment of playing music all together and being scared as to what that could mean since music was everything I knew.
I was working 60+ hours a week (sometimes 70) and two different jobs, which left no time for playing music or pursuing my goals to their fullest potential. I felt everything around me slowly collapsing. The worst part was, I was the one letting my dreams fade from reality.
I woke up on March 18 (2013), and drove to work like any other boring and dreadful day. I was there for no more than 20 minutes when I thought to myself... "This is going to be the day I change my life." So I wrote an email to one of my managers, but also sent it to everyone else in the company, letting them know that after I was done typing and sending the email, I would be getting out of my chair and never coming back. This is the exact copy of the email I sent to my manager and the rest of the company on March 18th, from my cubicle (keep in mind I have replaced any names and the company with the words NAME and COMPANY for legal reasons):
First off, I wanted to say thank you, for being so kind, and always lending your ears to people who have ideas. With that said, after I am done writing and sending this email to you, I will be getting out of my chair, walking out of (COMPANY), and never looking back.
I am a musician. I have a story to tell, and it’s about damn time I tell it. I can’t read music, I never took piano lessons, and I almost failed band in high school. However, I taught myself how to play the piano even though I was born with only one thumb. I taught myself how to record and mix my own music even though I was born with one ear and I’m completely deaf on my right side. I underwent open heart surgery when I was 23 because of a freak aneurysm in my heart. I had a full band, and slowly they all quit, and I fired the only one who wanted to stay because losing other members messed with my head. I have made mistakes like everyone else has. But quitting this job is one decision I will never call a mistake.
I have become someone I hate in the last few years because of many things that have gone sour or wrong, one of which has been working more than 60 hours a week at two different jobs, not having any time to write music. These past few years should have been some of my happiest years (since I got married to the most beautiful woman inside and out.) But unfortunately that just isn’t the case, and I am going to fix it, starting today.
I am going to raise $20,000 on kickstarter.com.
You can keep in touch with me at this email address: email@example.com
Which is also the email address for my facebook account, so add me on there as well.

I sincerely thank you for everything you’ve done for me while I was at (COMPANY). You are what this company needs, and I hope they realize that as much as I do. You are in a perfect position to change peoples’ lives for the better seeing as though you are now head of training, and I know that’s just what you’ll do.
Thank you (NAME), please keep in touch.
I knew something had to change, or I would slowly get sucked into the routine of daily life and never be able to crawl back out of it's dark hole. What good was it doing me working as much as I was working, if I never had any time to actual pursue my real passion (music)? I kept one of my jobs to allow me to pay all my bills, but quitting my other job freed up enough time to really get the ball rolling on this new album!
More importantly though, I am writing this album in hopes that it will give everyone else in the world the courage to just not care about the little things in life anymore and live the most honest life you can. It's hard to do, but feels amazing when you accomplish it.
WHERE IS YOUR MONEY GOING, AND HOW WILL IT HELP US SUCCEED?
This is where YOU come in! Instead of easily spending $20,000 on extremely expensive studio time (renting a studio to record the album) ... We will be making the necessary purchases required to build our own studio, and record everything ourselves. We have slowly but steadily been pouring all of our own money into recording equipment to make this a reality, but still need help from all of you to make final purchases, like outboard recording gear (lcompressors, microphones, preamps, etc), we will also need to make Plugin purchases for our recording software. Not only that, but we also need to make amp and instrument purchases (for example, a Fender Rhodes Piano). All of this stuff costs lots of money, which we could get by renting a studio for the length it takes us to record an album. But that's the problem. You are very limited when renting studio time, and if you run out of money but aren't done recording the album, somehow you need to come up with more money.
Recording everything ourselves, in our own studio, allows us the flexibility to release the best album we can make. Not only that, but since we will own all of the equipment we used to make this album, we will already be well on our way to making many more albums after that!
The rest of the money and anything raised over $20,000 will go towards touring and promoting our album! We want to live on the road and bring our music to YOU. After all, we are only recording new music in the first place so that it gives us the chance to perform it live for you! We absolutely can not wait to kick off our first ever tour from the help of supporters and amazing fans like you!
If we felt like we could come up with this money on our own, believe me, we would do so. We all work day jobs, however due to "Life Bills" (like Rent, food, car insurance, medical bills, etc.) we can never seem to actually get into a position that would allow us to do what we want for our fans. Which is what this all comes down to, you. You make our band possible, and it's with your help that Faintly will be able to finally (after 6 and a half years) record a debut Full-length album, and also create a debut documentary film which will document the entire making of the album, and also have special features like clips from literally our very first show (which was years ago)!
We need your help. I need your help.
We thank you in advance from the bottom of our hearts. Let's make this thing happen, and in no time at all we will be setting up a tour and coming to a town near you, that's our promise! Just check out all the cool rewards you can get from donating and helping us follow through with our dreams!
READ THE FINE PRINT REGARDING REWARDS: All items in every Rewards category (besides Reward #1) will be shipped when the album is finished and ready to ship (to cut down on shipping costs instead of shipping everything out individually). (Except the advanced digital download of the album, which will be available to you two weeks prior to the album release!) The estimated delivery time is just that, estimated. Our ambitious goal is to have the album finished and shipped by November of this year (2013). However, we will not ship anything we feel is not the absolute best we can do, and if November comes and the album isn't quite finished we will delay the release. We will be keeping everyone updated on the progress through video blogs and as November draws closer, we will be releasing an official Release Date.
Risks and challenges
Well as mentioned in the fine print of all the rewards listed to the side of this page, November of this year (2013) is an estimated release date for the album. However, we know how picky we are, and since we have the luxury of being on no Record Label, we can technically release the album whenever we want. With that being said, if for any reason we feel the album is not quite finished to our standards by November (2013), we will delay the release date until we know the album is the absolute best we can make it.
Knowing that November is a very ambitious goal, we will be keeping fans up-to-date via video blogs on our official website. That way, nobody will be left in the dark as to what we are doing and when things will be released. Also, we find it a great way to keep all of you (our fans) involved with the entire recording process!
We also want to share with you exactly what your generous contributions are going towards!

Everything in the list above will help us tremendously in the making of this new album. However, this list is by no means a definitive list of every single item we need, it's more a list of some things that will help us accomplish our end goal, giving all our fans a great album, and something they can be proud to say they believed in and backed from the beginning! There are many costs we have not included, like all the extra patch chords we will need, patch bay chords, mic stands, extension chords, studio foam, bass traps, etc. We also have not included any of the costs it will take to go on tour, which is significant. We all work day jobs, and have been putting all of our own money into all of our equipment thus far, which includes racking up some debt from music equipment purchases. Tours cost a band a lot of money in gas, maintaining of vehicles, food, places to shower, promotion, etc.
We would like to leave you with one really important note, the price breakdown list above will get us things that we will OWN, not rent. It will get us the beginning of a nice studio that we will OWN, that we can go into every day to write and record new music for you! Like most bands, we could easily spend $20,000 on studio time (renting a studio to record an album, paying the engineer, paying the producer, and the manager). But then when the albums done, we've toured it, and we're ready to make our next one, we're stuck trying to come up with another $20,000 to rent more studio time. We need your help in making this studio and album so that we as musicians, and you as listeners and fans all have a bright viable future we can take on together!
Thank you so much, we hope you'll share this kickstarter campaign as much as possible to help spread the word, you sincerely are the reason Faintly exists.
