"And therefore we have sailed the seas and come..."
...not to the holy city of Byzantium. More to a city of green glass and shadowed basalt, nestled in the lee of a gallery-carved stalagmite. But that sound is the rattling of the anchor-chain. The Sunless Sea Kickstarter has dropped anchor in a safe harbour while the funding storms rage outside.
We still have just under half the funding period left. We're charting a course for the first stretch goal, the Beneath the Sunless Sea expansion. We might make it. We might...
This was a chancy voyage for Failbetter. We sunk a great many person-weeks into prototyping the game and prepping the Kickstarter - that kind of time investment is a big gamble for a small company. We hoped you'd recognise the potential in the project, and you did and more than did. This won't be the last time we say thank you, but it may be the only time we say it in upper case and bold: THANK YOU.
Now we are going to get back to building the thing, for all of us. After a small break for biscuits.
Here's a little more concept art, and a key story element uniting a number of enemies. This will be a playable vessel if we get to build the expansion - but the Irrepressible and its captain are slated to appear in the primary Sunless Sea game anyway, so you'll be able to relax and enjoy the story whatever happens next.
Okay, just once more. THANK YOU.
The Set! Merciless, mercurial, blood-soaked artistic talents of incandescent magnitude. They're something like an unholy nautical marriage of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang and the Bloomsbury Group. The Perfidious Composer, the Pirate-Poet, the Ender of Critics, the Silent Sculptress with her knives and her tea, and the enigmatic Pianolist! Rumour has it they convene every year at an uncharted isle to co-ordinate raids, intrigues and operas.
The designs below - if our agent is to be believed - were drafted by the Pianolist to commission his underwater vessel, the 'Irrepressible'...
