1992 Sundance winner and cult classic In the Soup is in danger of disappearing forever.
Hi there – I'm Matt Grady from Factory 25, and I'm here to ask you to get on board and help us create a new archival print of indie feature In the Soup. Together, we can rescue this star-studded New York comedy from the destructive forces of time, and help it reach a wider audience than it's ever had the chance to before.
And in case you haven't heard of it...
In The Soup is an acclaimed independent feature comedy by director Alexandre Rockwell. In rich black and white, it's the story of an aspiring young New York filmmaker (Steve Buscemi) in the throes of his creative struggle, his beautiful neighbor and muse (Jennifer Beals), and a lovable con man (Seymour Cassel), chasing their dreams in quintessential 1990s NYC amidst a cast of oddball characters played by Stanley Tucci, Sam Rockwell, Will Patton, Jim Jarmusch, Debi Mazar, Carol Kane, and others.
In the director's words, "it’s a zeitgeist film that captured a moment in New York independent filmmaking when anything was possible."
Upon its release in 1992, it won the grand jury prize at Sundance competing against films like Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino) and Gas, Food, Lodging (Alison Anders), and proceded to play some of the most prestigious festivals worldwide throughout that year, including Venice, Toronto, and the New York Film Festival.
It came out to critical acclaim: In the words of reviewers from the New York Times, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Time and more, it is "hilarious," "irresistible," "furiously clever," "a magical and touching comic romance about movies and crime," "a dryly funny film of exceptional visual beauty" and "a droll, self-conscious fable with an unexpected heart of gold." Basically, people loved it.
But, despite these rave reviews and an amazing start to a theatrical tour, a series of distribution mishaps caused it to become unavailable and more or less stay that way for the next quarter-century. Now, an official high-quality copy of it does not exist digitally, it's not on Blu-Ray, and the DVD release it saw in 2004 which is now out of print.
This year, on the year of it's 25th Anniversary, is the perfect time for a long-deserved re-release, and In the Soup's digital debut.
But when I approached director Alex Rockwell about making this a reality with Factory 25, I came to learn there was a pretty big obstacle in the way of this dream...
As of last year, there was only one fine-grain, black-and-white master archival print left, and unfortunately, while being screened at a cinema in Los Angeles, this precious but aging, fragile print was accidentally damaged during projection to the extent that moments of the first and fifth reel were virtually shredded.
Without this time-proof archive of the film, not only can we not reproduce In the Soup in the way it was meant to be seen – it could be lost forever.
Because of the rarity of the Kodak black-and-white stock with which it was made, this process of restoration requires the epitome of expert attention and high-tech equipment at labs around the world, which, I won't lie, is pretty expensive.
The theater where it was damaged contributed some funds towards its repair, but it's only a fraction of what we need to restore the film to its original glory, and preserve it for future generations.
In collaboration with labs around the world and the archiving non-profit IndieCollect, parts of this complex restoration process are already underway, but in order to pay for it, I need some serious help!
First, through a series of complex lab processes (all of which I'll explain in a little more detail in the FAQs) we can create a new, archival print of the film from which copies can be made. This means the film will be available to replicate and screen for future generations.
Once we get that sorted out, we can also put it back out into the world. As I mentioned above, due to some distribution mishaps – namely the distribution company that acquired In the Soup folding shortly after the film's successful theatrical release — it has pretty much been widely unavailable for the past, well, 25 years.
With your help, I want to release it digitally and on Blu-Ray, and put it in at least a few theaters in all its glory, so new, broader audiences will be able to watch it easily.

If we knock our funding goal out of the park, we can release the film in more ways, on more channels, and do more to get the word out about it.
At a bare minimum we want to have celebratory 25th Anniversary screenings (you are all invited) in New York and Los Angeles.
If we raise more than our initial goal, I'd love to have screenings of the film in cities around the U.S. We'd also love to do a special release of the soundtrack which has never before been made available separate of the film, put the movie out on other in-demand formats, create new special content with the cast, and more. The more we raise, the more we can do!

I'm running this campaign with the full support of In The Soup director Alexandre Rockwell. He's made several features (including Four Rooms, a collaboration with Quentin Tarantino and Alison Anders, both of whom are fellow Sundance alums from 1992), and he's the head of the film directing program at New York University's graduate school. The process we're using for restoration is the result of a great deal of research and reviewing options with experts literally around the world. We have done extensive testing and we're confident this is the way to go, and we're ready for some exciting trial and error during the process.
