About this project
At FABRIQ we want to bring authenticity back to fashion. Every product we buy has a story. Where was it made? What is it made from? Who made it? Much of our fashion today has lost its connection to the materials, places and people that made it. We want to change that.
Being authentic does not mean giving up on style! Our bags stay true to their heritage while being modern, functional and absolutely stylish.
Although coming from very different backgrounds, Mitali Pattnaik and Bryna Hubbs met in San Francisco and connected over their shared love for fashion.
Mitali grew up in Orissa (also spelled Odisha), India - a state known for its beautiful handloom sarees. Handloom textiles were a huge part of her childhood, and she longed to see these beautiful woven patterns used in a more modern way.
She came to the US for college and has a successful career in technology at Microsoft, Yahoo!, Google, and Twitter. Products she worked on are used by millions of people daily. She loves working on FABRIQ because it is such a departure from her day-to-day job working with pixels and code.
Bryna is a Bay Area native, artist, and fashion designer. After earning her Bachelor of Arts at UCLA, and then attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising for a degree in Product Development, Bryna spent 7 years designing and producing her own line of handbags under the brand name Bryna Nicole. Her bags were sold nationwide, from Urban Outfitters to Nordstrom, and and even made an appearance on Blake Lively’s arm in Gossip Girl!
To keep the campaign streamlined and to expedite production, our debut capsule collection is made up of just 2 main styles - the Maya clutch and the Aruna cross-body - in multiple colorways.
Both bags are trimmed with vegetable-tanned Italian leather, ethically sourced by vendors based in California. The body of each style uses hand-woven ikat fabric, sourced directly from weaver co-ops in Orissa, India. The selected fabrics are each original, and limited in quantity, as they are woven by hand in the traditional customary designs and patterns unique to this region of India.

FABRIQ is a labor of love, we are not in this for profit. So we will be donating profits from future sales of our bags, to a wonderful non-profit organization called Educate Girls. Founded by Safeena Hussain, Educate Girls works at the grassroots level throughout India – both in urban slums and in poor rural areas - to keep girl children enrolled in school.
With your pledge, you will be contributing to our first production run as well as to the development of additional styles, ultimately expanding the collection. More importantly, to bring FABRIQ to life means to to help us contribute to Educate Girls, as well as continuing to provide more work to the handloom expert weavers in Mitali's home state of Orissa, India, and for this we cannot thank you enough.
Risks and challenges
Fundamentally, what we found in each other was the ultimate partnership in our complementary skill sets.
Having graduated from London Business School, Mitali's business background and extensive product development expertise bring a solid platform from which to launch any business. Bryna's experience in the luxury handbag market has honed her mastery of design, technical knowledge of bag construction as well as brings a wealth of industry contacts established throughout the entire production supply chain.
With all this experience, also comes the foresight that challenges and obstacles will occur in launching any new brand or product. To ensure a successful launch, we have secured two levels of manufacturing partners, specifically suited for different levels of production, depending on how successful our Kickstarter campaign is!
We have acquired the necessary materials, including a beautiful and unique collection of authentic fabrics, so that we are completely prepared to begin production once the campaign is funded.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
