About this project
Fabric8 Gallery seeks funds for the second exhibition at their parklet on 3318 22nd Street between Valencia and Guerrero Streets in San Francisco. A venue for rotating public art installation, the Parklet Gallery is a “canvas” where art gallery meets the street, bringing art to the community and, vice versa, the community to the art.
Donations will go towards the building and maintenance of the parklet, as well as to facilitate Artists’ Stipends.
The Fabric8 Parklet is part of the City and County of San Francisco’s Pavement to Parks program, a collaborative effort between the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Public Works, the Planning Department, and the Municipal Transportation Agency. The program encourages private citizens and businesses to create small public plazas and parks. Fabric8 successfully applied for the Parklet in October 2010, and have renewed their annual permit.
Our first exhibition, “The Peacekeeper” by Erik Otto, garnered much written and televised press, as well as received an SF Weekly Best of the Bay award. Moreover, it has become a much-appreciated venue for public art and relaxation by neighbors and tourists. People of all ages visit regularly to sit on the bean bags within the installation and watch passers-by or get to know their neighbors, while tourists come to take photos of the unique San Francisco experience.
The initial cost of the parklet was approximately $13,000. The budget to build and maintain the new design is $5,000, distributed as follows:
Artist Stipends $1500
Parklet Permit $400
2012 PARKLET ARTIST: URSULA XANTHE YOUNG
The second exhibition is currently being designed and built in-house with painter Ursula Xanthe Young, who is best known for her dreamy cityscapes of San Francisco. An outdoor lounge, Young’s parklet will offer theater seating and a small public stage set against a beautiful rendering of the city’s landscape and architecture.
In addition to hosting informal meetings and organized social activities, we plan to establish a short theater program on the parklet, hosting 10-minute productions for the public on a regular basis.
Risks and challenges
We truly hope you'll consider donating to this community art project, as it will help offset the costs of creating a high-quality installation for all to enjoy as well as better compensate the artists who contribute considerable time and effort.
Once the project is funded, we intend to complete it within one month. Potential setbacks may occur with installation, including technical difficulties with on-site construction, inclement weather, and City approval. We will also be consulting with neighbors throughout the process, and may need to address unforeseen concerns. However we have already succeeded in doing this once, so are confident we can do it again. Thank you for your consideration.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
